She went back into the storage room.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClaire\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll call you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The line ended.<\/p>\n<p>My mother arrived at 10:42 and let herself in with the spare key.<\/p>\n<p>She looked frightened.<\/p>\n<p>Not upset. Frightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere\u2019s Luca?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the living room.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She checked on him before sitting down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you see the letter?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnly the outside.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom, stop. Tell me what Dad did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She folded her hands together.<\/p>\n<p>For several seconds she stared at them.<\/p>\n<p>Then she said, \u201cYour father had another family before ours.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost laughed because the statement was too large to absorb.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe had a relationship before he married me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn\u2019t another family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was a child.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room went still.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat child?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA daughter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I sat opposite her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow old?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThree years older than you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was her name?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom looked toward the window.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClaire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stopped breathing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvan\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt may not be what you think.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy wife is named Claire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou just told me Dad had a daughter named Claire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI said there was a girl he believed might be his daughter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That distinction barely registered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho was her mother?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRebecca.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRebecca who?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI only knew her as Rebecca.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened to her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEleven years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The date on the envelope.<\/p>\n<p>I felt sick.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would Dad leave something with Claire\u2019s family?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom shook her head. \u201cI don\u2019t know how it ended up there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know more than you\u2019re telling me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen tell me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She closed her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour father made me promise that if this ever surfaced, I would protect you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She opened her handbag.<\/p>\n<p>Inside was an old photograph.<\/p>\n<p>My father stood beside a young woman holding a little girl. The child appeared three or four. She had dark hair and a solemn expression.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRebecca?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>Mom nodded.<\/p>\n<p>I turned the photograph over.<\/p>\n<p>There was a date and two names written on the back.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca.<\/p>\n<p>Claire.<\/p>\n<p>Christmas, 1998.<\/p>\n<p>My fingers went cold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy Claire was born in 1995.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo was this child.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the photograph again. The girl\u2019s face was young enough that resemblance meant almost nothing. Mom says there were changes.
