It only delays it.<\/p>\n<p>I read the sentence twice.<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn asked, \u201cWhat do you think?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think we should frame it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause if he&#39;s right, we should remember the risk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We did not actually frame it.<\/p>\n<p>But I added the idea to our charter review.<\/p>\n<p>Every three years, outside reviewers would test whether safeguards still functioned in practice.<\/p>\n<p>Not whether policies existed.<\/p>\n<p>Whether employees could actually use them.<\/p>\n<p>That distinction mattered.<\/p>\n<p>Paper controls are easy.<\/p>\n<p>Living controls are harder.<\/p>\n<p>On the anniversary of the day my restitution arrived, Laura and I finally replaced the water heater.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing dramatic.<\/p>\n<p>A plumber came.<\/p>\n<p>Drained the old tank.<\/p>\n<p>Dragged it out.<\/p>\n<p>Installed the new one.<\/p>\n<p>I stood in the garage looking at the rust around the bottom of the old heater.<\/p>\n<p>Laura found me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;re emotional about plumbing now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaniel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was thinking we postponed this for years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause we thought we couldn&#39;t afford it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSometimes we couldn&#39;t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSometimes Hartwell had the money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That still angered me.<\/p>\n<p>Probably always would.<\/p>\n<p>Restitution did not erase the years.<\/p>\n<p>It changed what happened next.<\/p>\n<p>We paid down debt.<\/p>\n<p>Added to Mia&#39;s college account.<\/p>\n<p>Took a family trip.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing extravagant.<\/p>\n<p>The first evening away, I left my phone in the hotel room.<\/p>\n<p>On purpose.<\/p>\n<p>Laura noticed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrowth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo not document it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToo late.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Months later, Teresa sent me a photograph.<\/p>\n<p>Kevin in a Hartwell shirt beside an old service truck.<\/p>\n<p>On the back she had written:<\/p>\n<p>This is how I want to remember him.<\/p>\n<p>Not the termination letter.<\/p>\n<p>Not the dispute.<\/p>\n<p>Not the money.<\/p>\n<p>The work.<\/p>\n<p>I put the photograph in our archive with her permission.<\/p>\n<p>Under it, I added a note:<\/p>\n<p>Systems do not only distribute money. They distribute reputations.<\/p>\n<p>That became another safeguard.<\/p>\n<p>Any automated or managerial process affecting an employee&#39;s integrity, honesty, or professional standing required evidence strong enough to survive independent review.<\/p>\n<p>No more circular proof.<\/p>\n<p>No more deduction becomes evidence becomes termination.<\/p>\n<p>One evening, as the service department emptied, Caleb came into my office.<\/p>\n<p>He placed something on the desk.<\/p>\n<p>A small frame.<\/p>\n<p>Inside was a photocopy of my original $312.17 pay statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;re kidding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t want this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, you do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause everyone keeps talking about the eleven million dollars.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwelve now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSee?
