complaint.

No question.

That tiny act nearly undid me.

Respect can be so quiet that people fail to notice how healing it is.

Lily returned the company?”

Lily frowned.

“Something Lantern.”

Silver Lantern.

So Daniel had found the connection.

Not the whole truth.

But a thread.

I chose my words carefully.

“Your father is allowed to ask questions.”

“Are you hiding something?”

Children deserve honesty, but they laughed.

“No.”

“Then what?”

“Something I’m not ready to tell the family.”

She studied me.

“Does Dad know?”

“No.”

“Mom?”

“No.”

“Ethan?”

“No.”

“Do I know?”

“You know that I have a secret.”

She leaned back.

“That barely counts.”

“It counts enough.”

Lily looked toward the front windows.

Then she false certainty would have.

Daniel arrived after dinner.

He did not come to the door.

He waited at the curb.

I watched from behind the curtain as Lily climbed into his truck.

They spoke for a minute.

Then she pointed toward the house.

Daniel looked up.

Not at the porch.

At the number beside the front door.

I saw the moment recognition moved through him.

He turned back to Lily.

She shook her head.

Probably telling him to ask me himself.

Daniel looked toward the house again.

Toward my house.

For a long second, neither of us moved.

I do not know whether he saw me behind the curtain.

Then his truck pulled away.

My phone
