A small animal carrier sat against the guest-room wall.<\/p>\n
Beside it were feeding bottles, a digital kitchen scale I had never seen before, unopened packages of kitten formula, disposable gloves, and neatly folded towels.<\/p>\n
A shallow box rested near the rocking chair.<\/p>\n
One half sat over a heating pad.<\/p>\n
Printed instructions had been clipped together on the dresser. A logo at the top belonged to a local animal rescue organization.<\/p>\n
I turned toward Greg.<\/p>\n
He was holding the newly rescued kitten against his chest.<\/p>\n

\u201cClean cages. Wash bedding. Pick up supplies. Drive animals to appointments sometimes. Help with feeding.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cNewborn animals?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cSometimes.\u201d<\/p>\n
The practiced movements in the garden suddenly made sense.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo those videos you supposedly watched tonight?\u201d<\/p>\n
Greg grimaced.<\/p>\n
\u201cNot entirely tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n
I sat on the edge of the guest bed.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou told me you were running errands.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cSometimes I was running errands.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cFor abandoned cats?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cSome of the errands were rescue-related.\u201d<\/p>\n
I stared at him.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat distinction is not helping you.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd the last three weeks?\u201d<\/p>\n
He placed the second kitten beside Susan.<\/p>\n
\u201cI started taking overnight feeding shifts.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cSo your back\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou could even have said, \u2018Laura, I have inexplicably begun naming kittens after elderly relatives.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cSusan is the first relative.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThat is not reassuring.\u201d<\/p>\n
Greg\u2019s mouth twitched.<\/p>\n
Mine didn\u2019t.<\/p>\n
He sat in the rocking chair.<\/p>\n
For a moment neither of us spoke.<\/p>\n
The room looked different now.<\/p>\n
Not sinister.<\/p>\n
Just secret.<\/p>\n
That almost made it worse.<\/p>\n

Greg rubbed both hands over his face.<\/p>\n
\u201cI didn\u2019t think I was hiding it.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYou invented errands.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI know how that sounds.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIt sounds like hiding.\u201d<\/p>\n
He nodded.<\/p>\n
Susan cried.<\/p>\n
Greg immediately reached for one of the tiny bottles.<\/p>\n
\u201cHas she eaten?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cA little.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cBefore I went back outside for the other one.\u201d<\/p>\n
He checked the bottle temperature against the inside of his wrist.<\/p>\n
The gesture stopped me.<\/p>\n
I remembered him doing precisely the same thing with Michael\u2019s formula three decades earlier.<\/p>\n
He lifted Susan from the box, settled her in the crook of his arm, and positioned the bottle carefully.<\/p>\n
Her mouth found it.<\/p>\n
Greg\u2019s shoulders relaxed.<\/p>\n

He kept his eyes on the kitten.<\/p>\n

That got his attention.<\/p>\n
I had him.<\/p>\n

Greg went perfectly still.<\/p>\n
Susan continued drinking.<\/p>\n
The tiny rhythmic sound seemed unusually loud.<\/p>\n

The words sounded less like pride than an argument he had repeated privately many times.<\/p>\n

After decades of lunches, homework, doctor appointments, sports practices, emergencies, tuition bills, heartbreaks, airport runs, and late-night phone calls, I had been ready for quiet.<\/p>\n
Greg had apparently heard something else.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou thought I was happy they didn\u2019t need us anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYou were happy.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI was happy they were capable.\u201d<\/p>\n
He looked at me.<\/p>\n
\u201cIs there a difference?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cA large one.\u201d<\/p>\n
Greg removed the empty bottle and began rubbing Susan\u2019s back gently.<\/p>\n
The kitten released a tiny burp.<\/p>\n
Under any other circumstances, we both would have laughed.<\/p>\n
Neither of us did.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhy were you ashamed to tell me?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n
He stared at the floor.<\/p>\n
\u201cI wasn\u2019t ashamed.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYes, you were.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYou hid something harmless for six months. People hide harmless things when the meaning behind them embarrasses them.\u201d<\/p>\n

Finally he said, \u201cI thought you\u2019d think it was pathetic.\u201d<\/p>\n
The word hurt more than I expected.<\/p>\n

He shook his head.<\/p>\n

Despite myself, I laughed.<\/p>\n
