Now my parents might lose their house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd I still don\u2019t know whether I have a husband.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Julian looked down at the microphone.<\/p>\n<p>Then placed it carefully on the nearest table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maya stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>He lifted his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think you do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She made a small sound.<\/p>\n<p>Mom rushed toward her.<\/p>\n<p>Dad swore under his breath.<\/p>\n<p>The bridesmaids froze.<\/p>\n<p>I felt no satisfaction.<\/p>\n<p>That surprised me.<\/p>\n<p>For all the years I had imagined my family finally discovering they were wrong about me, I had never pictured this.<\/p>\n<p>Vindication was supposed to feel warm.<\/p>\n<p>Instead it felt like standing beside a building after the fire had exposed every room.<\/p>\n<p>Julian removed his wedding band.<\/p>\n<p>He had put it on during the ceremony less than two hours earlier.<\/p>\n<p>He held it in his palm.<\/p>\n<p>Maya stared at it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re canceling our marriage?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to determine what was legally completed and what happens next.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn\u2019t an answer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s the only answer I can give tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She slapped him.<\/p>\n<p>The sound cracked through the ballroom.<\/p>\n<p>Julian did not move.<\/p>\n<p>Maya\u2019s hand remained suspended for a second.<\/p>\n<p>Then she began sobbing.<\/p>\n<p>Mom wrapped both arms around her.<\/p>\n<p>My father looked toward me.<\/p>\n<p>His expression held something beyond anger now.<\/p>\n<p>Hatred needed simplicity.<\/p>\n<p>I had become complicated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou happy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He asked it quietly.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He seemed almost disappointed.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps he needed me to be cruel so he could remain innocent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI tried to leave.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad looked away.<\/p>\n<p>I picked up the manila folder from the table where Julian had set it.<\/p>\n<p>It was heavier than I expected.<\/p>\n<p>Paper always was.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJulian.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMake the call about the temporary pause.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad looked back.<\/p>\n<p>I raised one hand before he could speak.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is not forgiveness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom stared at me over Maya\u2019s shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is not a gift. It is not me taking responsibility for your debts.
