I\u2019m almost finished.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Julian descended one step from the dais.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One word.<\/p>\n<p>Quiet.<\/p>\n<p>Absolute.<\/p>\n<p>The room changed.<\/p>\n<p>Mom lowered the microphone slightly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExcuse me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Julian walked toward the podium.<\/p>\n<p>I knew that expression.<\/p>\n<p>I had seen it during negotiations when another attorney made the mistake of lying about documents Julian already possessed.<\/p>\n<p>His anger was rarely loud.<\/p>\n<p>It became precise.<\/p>\n<p>That was worse.<\/p>\n<p>He held out his hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGive me the microphone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom laughed uncertainly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJulian, this is my toast.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen sit down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maya rose behind him.<\/p>\n<p>Her wedding gown spread around her chair.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJulian.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you know she was going to say this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maya glanced at our mother.<\/p>\n<p>That glance answered him.<\/p>\n<p>Julian nodded slowly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was joking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas she?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClara knows Mom\u2019s sense of humor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>From the back of the room, I almost laughed.<\/p>\n<p>Julian looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>Then at Maya.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was leaving.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The word escaped Maya too quickly.<\/p>\n<p>Julian stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>Maya seemed to realize what she had said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI mean, she always does this. She makes everything tense and then walks away so everyone feels guilty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stopped beside table eleven.<\/p>\n<p>There it was.<\/p>\n<p>The story my family told about me had become so complete that even leaving an attack was evidence of wrongdoing.<\/p>\n<p>Julian turned back to Mom.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe microphone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My mother\u2019s face hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot at my daughter\u2019s wedding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is your daughter\u2019s wedding for approximately as long as I continue agreeing to marry her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>Maya\u2019s face emptied.<\/p>\n<p>Dad stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWatch yourself, son.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Julian glanced toward him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not your son.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad stepped away from the head table.<\/p>\n<p>Several guests shifted uncomfortably.<\/p>\n<p>The band had stopped playing entirely.<\/p>\n<p>Mom tried to laugh again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone, please excuse this. Weddings are emotional.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She raised the microphone.<\/p>\n<p>Julian took it from her hand.<\/p>\n<p>He did not yank it.<\/p>\n<p>He simply removed it.<\/p>\n<p>Mom was too startled to resist.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJulian!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stepped away from the podium.<\/p>\n<p>The microphone squealed.<\/p>\n<p>A few people winced.<\/p>\n<p>Then Julian looked over the crowd.<\/p>\n<p>Two hundred faces stared back.<\/p>\n<p>I remained standing beside the rear tables with my purse on my shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>I wanted him to stop.<\/p>\n<p>I also wanted, with an intensity that frightened me, to hear what he intended to say.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBefore anyone laughs again,\u201d Julian said, \u201cI think you deserve to know what you\u2019re laughing at.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My father moved toward him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGive me that microphone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Julian raised one hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad stopped.<\/p>\n<p>Not because Julian was physically threatening.<\/p>\n<p>Because Julian sounded like an attorney.<\/p>\n<p>And my father finally seemed to remember what kind.<\/p>\n<p>Mom\u2019s face had gone pale.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJulian, whatever Clara told you\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClara told me almost nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was true.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe didn\u2019t need to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked toward the guests.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have spent six months listening to this family describe Clara Vance as unemployed, irresponsible, dependent, unstable, and incapable of supporting herself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A nervous murmur traveled through the room.<\/p>\n<p>Maya descended from the dais.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlease stop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Julian looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you ever ask whether any of it was true?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maya opened her mouth.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing came out.<\/p>\n<p>He continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you ever ask where Clara worked?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe does computer stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A few guests exchanged glances.<\/p>\n<p>Julian\u2019s expression remained unreadable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat company?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maya looked toward Mom.<\/p>\n<p>Mom answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome little technology business. Who cares?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Julian almost smiled.<\/p>\n<p>Not with amusement.<\/p>\n<p>With disbelief.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome little technology business.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He repeated the phrase softly.<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s confidence was beginning to crack.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat exactly are you implying?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Julian turned toward him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not implying anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He reached inside his tuxedo jacket.<\/p>\n<p>My stomach dropped.<\/p>\n<p>A manila folder.<\/p>\n<p>I knew that folder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJulian.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For the first time, I spoke loudly enough for the microphone to catch me.<\/p>\n<p>He looked toward me.<\/p>\n<p>I shook my head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The entire room followed his gaze.<\/p>\n<p>He lowered the folder slightly.<\/p>\n<p>For several seconds, neither of us spoke.<\/p>\n<p>Then my mother laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere.
