The vehicle looked absurdly polished against the salt-stained pavement and banks of gray slush.

A tall man in a dark overcoat stepped out.

Marcus.

He had worked for my father for almost a decade, though calling him a security chief never quite described him. Marcus handled problems before they became emergencies. He spoke little, noticed everything, and had an unnerving ability to appear exactly where my father needed him.

He entered the waiting room, brushed snow from his shoulders, and looked me over from head to toe.

“Mrs. Whitmore.”

“Claire is fine.”

“Your father would probably disagree with anything being described as fine tonight.”

I almost smiled.

Marcus took my suitcase before I could reach for it.

“How did you get here so quickly?”

“I was already nearby.”

I raised an eyebrow.

“Nearby meaning?”

“Your father has a broad definition.”

That sounded like him.

Outside, Marcus opened the rear door and waited until I was settled before placing the suitcase in the cargo area. Heat blew across my legs. A bottle of water and a folded blanket had been left on the seat.

I pulled the blanket over my knees.

Only then did I look toward the tracks.

The train was long gone.

Knowing that should have made the decision feel final.

Instead it felt strangely clean.

Marcus drove toward a small private airport forty minutes away. Snow softened as we left the station behind. Streetlights became sparse, then disappeared entirely.

My phone buzzed ten minutes into the drive.

Daniel.

Where are you?

I stared at the message.

Marcus’s eyes met mine briefly in the rearview mirror but he said nothing.

Another message arrived.

Claire?

Then, two minutes later:

Did you go to the bathroom?

I actually covered my mouth.

Not because it was funny.

Because my husband had apparently awakened, found my place in coach empty, and still imagined I might simply be somewhere else on the train.

Six hours.

He had known I was standing somewhere behind him for six hours.

Now he had finally noticed that the person he expected to be there was not.

Another message appeared.

Call me.

I started typing.

I got off because you—

I deleted it.

I tried again.

I’m safe.
