from behind me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat one was silver when we came last Christmas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom turned.<\/p>\n<p>He continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI remember because Grandpa\u2019s old one was black.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For a second, pride and sadness hit me together.<\/p>\n<p>My son noticed everything because he had learned that adults might later deny what he saw.<\/p>\n<p>Mom looked furious.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI replaced it in the spring.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said you hadn\u2019t touched the workshop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI meant the contents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I photographed the lock.<\/p>\n<p>Then I called Jacob Hale.<\/p>\n<p>He advised me not to force entry without confirming ownership of the items inside.<\/p>\n<p>The property belonged to Mom.<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s estate records did not.<\/p>\n<p>Hale said he would contact the sheriff\u2019s investigator assigned to my report and request guidance.<\/p>\n<p>While we waited, Mom stood several yards away with her arms folded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re making this bigger than it is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cForty-eight thousand six hundred dollars was stolen in my name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou would\u2019ve given it to Amanda eventually.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t know that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, I do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She shook her head as though I had disappointed her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour father always encouraged this selfish streak.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I nearly answered.<\/p>\n<p>Then I understood what she was doing.<\/p>\n<p>If Dad had protected me, he was selfish.<\/p>\n<p>If I protected myself, I was selfish.<\/p>\n<p>If Amanda took from me, she was struggling.<\/p>\n<p>There was no version of this family in which my boundaries were allowed to be neutral.<\/p>\n<p>So I stopped defending them.<\/p>\n<p>The investigator arrived forty minutes later.<\/p>\n<p>Detective Lena Ortiz was younger than I expected, perhaps early forties, with a practical wool coat and a way of listening without moving her face.<\/p>\n<p>She spoke with Mom privately.<\/p>\n<p>Then with me.<\/p>\n<p>Mom admitted the workshop contained Dad\u2019s records but claimed everything had legally transferred to her.<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz explained that documents connected to an active identity-theft and forgery investigation could not simply be withheld.<\/p>\n<p>Mom agreed to open the workshop.<\/p>\n<p>The key was not lost.<\/p>\n<p>She retrieved it from her purse.<\/p>\n<p>Noah noticed that too.<\/p>\n<p>He said crooked.<\/p>\n<p>Boxes had been overturned.<\/p>\n<p>Papers lay scattered across the floor.<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz stopped in the doorway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen did this happen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom stared past her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou told me nobody has been inside since your husband died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI said I rarely come in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d Ortiz said. \u201cYou said nobody had been inside.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom\u2019s jaw tightened.<\/p>\n<p>I walked toward Dad\u2019s red tool chest.<\/p>\n<p>The lid stood open.<\/p>\n<p>Sockets and wrenches had been dumped into a plastic crate beside it.<\/p>\n<p>The bottom drawer was missing.<\/p>\n<p>I crouched.<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s old chest had six drawers.<\/p>\n<p>I knew because he used to let Noah, then a toddler, count them.<\/p>\n<p>One.<\/p>\n<p>Two.<\/p>\n<p>Three.<\/p>\n<p>Four.<\/p>\n<p>Five.<\/p>\n<p>Six.<\/p>\n<p>Now there were five.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere\u2019s the bottom drawer?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>I reached inside.<\/p>\n<p>The false panel Ruth had mentioned was gone.<\/p>\n<p>Someone had found it.<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz photographed everything.<\/p>\n<p>A layer of dust covered most of the workbench except for several clean streaks where objects had recently been moved.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRecently?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz But not five years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom became defensive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had a handyman in here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRepairs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat repairs?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe roof.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked upward.<\/p>\n<p>No interior roof work had been done.<\/p>\n<p>The rafters remained dusty and undisturbed.<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz saw it too.<\/p>\n<p>She asked for the handyman\u2019s name.<\/p>\n<p>Mom couldn\u2019t remember.<\/p>\n<p>Then Lily tugged my sleeve.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMommy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned.<\/p>\n<p>She was pointing toward the wall behind Dad\u2019s pegboard.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s blue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At first I thought she meant paint.<\/p>\n<p>Then I saw it.<\/p>\n<p>A sliver of blue cardboard protruded from behind a vertical support beam near the floor.<\/p>\n<p>I knelt.<\/p>\n<p>Someone had pushed a thin folder into the gap between the wall and workbench.<\/p>\n<p>Not Dad\u2019s expanding file.<\/p>\n<p>This one was smaller.<\/p>\n<p>Damaged.<\/p>\n<p>Half crushed.<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz put on gloves before removing it.<\/p>\n<p>Inside were photocopies.<\/p>\n<p>Bank statements.<\/p>\n<p>Insurance documents.<\/p>\n<p>A handwritten ledger.<\/p>\n<p>And a photograph of Dad standing outside a branch of Franklin Community Bank.<\/p>\n<p>Across the top page, Dad had written:<\/p>\n<p>IF THIS FILE IS FOUND WITHOUT THE ORIGINAL, PATRICIA HAS SEEN IT.<\/p>\n<p>My stomach turned.<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz read it twice.<\/p>\n<p>Mom stepped backward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad wrote that,\u201d Noah whispered.<\/p>\n<p>I recognized the handwriting too.<\/p>\n<p>Below the warning, Dad had listed dates.<\/p>\n<p>Withdrawals from a savings account.<\/p>\n<p>Transfers between accounts.<\/p>\n<p>Checks signed in his name.<\/p>\n<p>Some went back seven years.<\/p>\n<p>One entry was circled.<\/p>\n<p>$18,000.<\/p>\n<p>Next to it, Dad wrote:<\/p>\n<p>Claire college fund \u2014 moved without permission.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the number.<\/p>\n<p>I had worked through college.<\/p>\n<p>Waitressed.<\/p>\n<p>Tutored.<\/p>\n<p>Taken loans.<\/p>\n<p>Skipped meals at the end of semesters because I refused to call home and ask for money Mom always said wasn\u2019t there.<\/p>\n<p>Dad had created a college fund.<\/p>\n<p>Eighteen thousand dollars.<\/p>\n<p>It disappeared before I ever knew it existed.<\/p>\n<p>Another entry.<\/p>\n<p>$11,500.<\/p>\n<p>Claire wedding.<\/p>\n<p>Withdrawn.<\/p>\n<p>Another.<\/p>\n<p>$7,200.<\/p>\n<p>Insurance refund after accident.<\/p>\n<p>Claire\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>Moved.<\/p>\n<p>The numbers accumulated.<\/p>\n<p>Not forty-eight thousand.<\/p>\n<p>Not even close.<\/p>\n<p>Detective Ortiz turned pages slowly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much do you think is here?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I couldn\u2019t answer.<\/p>\n<p>Jacob Hale arrived twenty minutes later after Ortiz requested his presence.<\/p>\n<p>He examined Dad\u2019s handwriting and documents.<\/p>\n<p>The largest page contained a total.<\/p>\n<p>$126,430.<\/p>\n<p>Money connected to me.<\/p>\n<p>Moved.<\/p>\n<p>Withdrawn.<\/p>\n<p>Redirected.<\/p>\n<p>Over almost twelve years.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Mom.<\/p>\n<p>She sat on Dad\u2019s old stool.<\/p>\n<p>For once, she had nothing to say.<\/p>\n<p>Then Ortiz found another page.<\/p>\n<p>Dad had written three names.<\/p>\n<p>Patricia Bennett.<\/p>\n<p>Elaine Mercer.<\/p>\n<p>Amanda Reynolds.<\/p>\n<p>Beside Amanda\u2019s name was a date from thirteen years earlier.<\/p>\n<p>I would have been twenty-four.<\/p>\n<p>The note beside it read:<\/p>\n<p>Amanda knows.
