Somewhere near the breakfast room, a waffle machine was being cleaned. The air smelled faintly of vanilla batter and disinfectant.

“Long trip?” the clerk asked.

“Long night.”

She handed me three hot-chocolate packets along with the keycards.

“Breakfast starts at six.”

Our room had two queen beds.

That ordinary fact nearly undid me.

Noah claimed the one near the window, then helped me pull back the comforter on the other. I lowered Lily onto the mattress without waking her completely.

Her eyes opened when I tucked the rabbit beside her.

“Are we still having Thanksgiving?”

“Yes.”

“With Grandma?”

I hesitated.

“We’re having Thanksgiving somewhere everybody gets a bed.”

She considered that for perhaps two seconds.

“Okay.”

Then she closed her eyes.

Noah watched me from across the room.

I placed my laptop on the desk.

“What are you doing?” he asked.

“Fixing something.”

I reopened the Pine Ridge Lodge confirmation.

The numbers looked even worse on the larger screen.

The lodge alone had cost $8,940. With the other reservations, my total commitment was $12,684.72.

I found the lodge’s twenty-four-hour number and stepped into the bathroom.

A man named Daniel answered.

I gave him the reservation number.

“I need to cancel.”

There was a pause while he opened the booking.

“Ms. Bennett, because this is a holiday reservation, your deposit is nonrefundable.”

“How much?”

“Two thousand two hundred dollars.”

I closed my eyes.

Two thousand two hundred dollars was not nothing.

It represented months of careful saving.

But the alternative was spending more than ten thousand additional dollars rewarding people who had just taught my children exactly where they ranked.

“Cancel it.”

Daniel hesitated.

“Are you certain?”

Through the partially open bathroom door, I saw Noah pulling a blanket over Lily.

“Yes.”

The confirmation arrived before we ended the call.

After that, the process became strangely easy.

I canceled the vans.

Then the grocery delivery.

Then the photographer.

The horseback ride.

The wine package.

The caterer couldn’t refund the deposit, but after I explained that the event had collapsed, the manager offered to donate the food already ordered to a local shelter.

“Please do.”

At 12:16, the final cancellation email arrived.

Six months of planning disappeared in less than forty minutes.

I closed the laptop.

Then I turned off my phone.

The silence that followed felt enormous.

Saturday morning, Lily woke because she smelled waffles.

She discovered the indoor pool ten minutes later and pressed both hands against the lobby window.

“Can we swim?”

“We didn’t bring swimsuits.”

Her face fell.

Noah pointed across the road.

“There’s a store.”

So we bought swimsuits.

We spent two hours in the pool.

We ate pizza for lunch.

That evening, we found a holiday light display twenty minutes away, where Lily drank cocoa too quickly and burned her tongue, then insisted on finishing it anyway.

For the first time since we had left North Carolina, neither child seemed worried about being inconvenient.

I kept my phone off.

Mom had watched us leave.

If she had truly been worried about our safety, she could have called before I switched it off.

She hadn’t.

At dinner Saturday night, Noah asked, “Do you regret canceling it?”

My fork stopped halfway to my mouth.

“How do you know?”

“I fingers.

“There’s something else.”

Lily was busy drawing a rabbit on the hotel notepad.

“What?”

“Aunt Amanda knew you plates.

The sleeping bags had not resulted from confusion.

Mom hadn’t made a careless last-minute decision because Amanda arrived first.

They had discussed what I might do.

They had predicted my reaction.

Most importantly, they had decided the money I had already spent would keep me from leaving.

They believed my generosity had trapped me.

I reached across the table.

“She was wrong.”

Noah took my hand.

Sunday morning, I turned my phone on at 7:03.

It immediately began vibrating.

Messages filled the screen.

Where are the vans?

The lodge says our reservation is gone.

Call me.

Fix this.

People are standing outside.

My mother’s messages grew increasingly furious.

By 7:31, I had eighty-three missed calls.

Lily sat cross-legged on the bed brushing her stuffed rabbit with the hotel comb.

My phone rang again.

MOM.

Noah looked at the screen.

“You don’t have to answer.”

“I know.”

But after years of
