You don\u2019t get another person rearranged around what you want.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>Then I said, \u201cYou spent forty years making everyone believe you were necessary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His voice hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. You were paperwork.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For the first time, Victor shouted.<\/p>\n<p>A raw sound burst through the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Agents on the radio reported movement.<\/p>\n<p>He raised the gun.<\/p>\n<p>Not at officers.<\/p>\n<p>Toward himself.<\/p>\n<p>Monroe signaled negotiators.<\/p>\n<p>I kept talking.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t want to die.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t know what I want.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVera does.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That stopped him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe says you kept your originals because you\u2019re terrified the real Vincent disappears.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His breathing became ragged.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you die out there, Victor Hale dies. Paul Mercer dies. Gregory Vale dies. Every name you stole ends.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I paused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Vincent Lasker becomes a line in somebody else\u2019s evidence report.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The gun lowered slightly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDrop it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He did not.<\/p>\n<p>But he was listening.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDrop it, and you get to tell your version.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was the one temptation he could not resist.<\/p>\n<p>Control of narrative.<\/p>\n<p>The last identity.<\/p>\n<p>Author.<\/p>\n<p>He threw the gun into the water.<\/p>\n<p>Agents moved.<\/p>\n<p>Victor dropped to his knees.<\/p>\n<p>Hands on his head.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time in decades, the man who had survived by becoming other people had nowhere left to go.<\/p>\n<p>They arrested him under the name Vincent Harold Lasker.<\/p>\n<p>But before officers pulled him from the water, he shouted one last thing toward the phone still held by the negotiator.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClara!
