because I had done nothing productive.

Then I realized reading counted.

That required adjustment.

Spring moved toward summer.

Walter began planning the family picnic months too early.

He emailed everyone a subject line:

NO EMPTY CHAIRS IF WE CAN HELP IT.

The phrase hurt.

And comforted.

Linda would still be absent.

Arthur.

Our parents.

Others.

No gathering could restore them.

But perhaps the goal was no longer to prevent empty chairs.

Perhaps it was to notice who still occupied the full ones.

One Sunday, I took the small blue scrap from its envelope.

I placed it beside a photograph of my mother holding me as an infant.

I had seen the photograph many times.

Now I noticed something.

At the edge of the image, beneath my blanket, a tiny piece of blue check showed.

Proof.

Not that I needed it.

But there it was.

I laughed.

My mother had been telling the truth all along.

Not always the whole truth.

But enough to leave a trail.

I touched the picture.

“You could have simply explained things.”

The room remained quiet.

Then I imagined her answer.

You could have asked better questions.

Infuriating woman.

I smiled.

The phone rang.

Brenda.

“What?”

“That is how you answer now?”

“You call constantly.”

“I have news.”

“Good or dangerous?”

“Both.”

I sat frowned.

“When?”

“1951.”

I laughed.

“That cannot be right.”

“It is.”

“For what?”

“A dance.”

I stopped.

Brenda continued.

“Apparently my mother lent your mother a dress before either of us was born.”

Neither of us spoke.

Then Brenda whispered:

“Martha, I think our mothers knew each other long before prom.”

<a
