Brenda recognized it immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is Mom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Helen laughed at something Margaret said.<\/p>\n<p>Then the two women moved closer to whoever children\u2019s clothes.<\/p>\n<p>No apology.<\/p>\n<p>No reference to prom.<\/p>\n<p>They were simply doing work together.<\/p>\n<p>The original wound had become history between them, not the sometimes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My mother paused.<\/p>\n<p>Then said, \u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI won\u2019t carry your apology.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brenda looked at me sharply.<\/p>\n<p>The same principle Arthur later used.<\/p>\n<p>If you have something worth saying, tell Martha.<\/p>\n<p>My mother continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you want her to know you, go know her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Helen said softly, \u201cI don\u2019t think she\u2019d want that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen respect it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut don\u2019t make me your asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t remember her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were working the floor,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere were probably eighty people here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He was right.<\/p>\n<p>The 1988 Christmas party had been crowded.<\/p>\n<p>Employees.<\/p>\n<p>Spouses.<\/p>\n<p>Suppliers.<\/p>\n<p>Church us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYears.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brenda groaned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMartha, your entire family is impossible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWelcome.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We sat in Ellen\u2019s kitchen.<\/p>\n<p>She made tea.<\/p>\n<p>Then she told us.<\/p>\n<p>After prom, Helen approached Margaret through Louise.<\/p>\n<p>The apology letters came first.<\/p>\n<p>Then Helen began helping raising David.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ellen shrugged.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour mother had Tuesday evenings that did not involve you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Again, obvious once said.<\/p>\n<p>Brenda asked, \u201cDid Harold know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot at first.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened when he found out?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ellen\u2019s expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was angry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow angry?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEllen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wasn\u2019t there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at Brenda.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour mother came to Margaret with a bruised wrist once.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brenda went still.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid she say he did it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen don\u2019t assume.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ellen\u2019s voice softened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut Margaret asked if she needed somewhere to stay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did Mom say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brenda looked down.<\/p>\n<p>Ellen continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA year later, Helen opened her private bank account.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There it was.<\/p>\n<p>The rescue.<\/p>\n<p>Agency.<\/p>\n<p>Brenda whispered, \u201cWhy didn\u2019t Mom leave him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ellen looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas she afraid?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProbably.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid she love him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPossibly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose can coexist?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brenda looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>I thought of all the simplistic questions people ask about difficult marriages.<\/p>\n<p>Why stay?<\/p>\n<p>Why not leave?<\/p>\n<p>As though fear, money, children, habit, affection, social pressure and hope do not knot themselves together.<\/p>\n<p>Ellen poured more tea.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMargaret never judged her for staying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow do you know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We both looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI asked Margaret why Helen tolerated him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe told me I had no idea what choices looked like from inside someone else\u2019s house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I smiled.<\/p>\n<p>My mother had apparently spent her life producing sentences designed to annoy me decades later.<\/p>\n<p>Brenda wiped her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Helen ever talk about me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll the time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did she say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat she worried you were becoming like Harold.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brenda closed her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>There was no gentle way for that truth to land.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSometimes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brenda opened her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Ellen added, \u201cShe also said you were funny, loyal to your children, excellent with numbers and terrible at admitting fear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brenda laughed through tears.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat also sounds right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe did not reduce you to your worst behavior.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I watched Brenda absorb that.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe this was what she needed most.<\/p>\n<p>Not proof Helen excused her.<\/p>\n<p>Proof Helen saw all of her.<\/p>\n<p>Before we left, Ellen gave us a photograph.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret and Helen at a church sewing table.<\/p>\n<p>Between them lay a mountain of fabric.<\/p>\n<p>My mother looked irritated.<\/p>\n<p>Helen looked delighted.<\/p>\n<p>On the back, Margaret had written:<\/p>\n<p>Helen insists lace improves everything. She is wrong.<\/p>\n<p>Brenda laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLace is often unnecessary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou inherited Margaret\u2019s worst quality.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCompetence?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCertainty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We drove back toward Caldwell.<\/p>\n<p>At a stoplight, Brenda said, \u201cI\u2019m glad they became friends.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo am I.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoes it bother you that they hid it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA little.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMe too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I think that is our problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMargaret would say that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At Caldwell, David had found more cassette tapes.<\/p>\n<p>I threatened to fire him.<\/p>\n<p>He reminded me he co-owned the company.<\/p>\n<p>We listened anyway.<\/p>\n<p>Most contained nothing relevant.<\/p>\n<p>Christmas music.<\/p>\n<p>Employee awards.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur making terrible jokes.<\/p>\n<p>Then one tape from 1991.<\/p>\n<p>My mother and Arthur were speaking after a company dinner.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur asked, \u201cHave you told Martha?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My mother replied, \u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My body tensed.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur said, \u201cYou should.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause she thinks the hospital contract saved us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot by itself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I leaned toward the player.<\/p>\n<p>My mother sighed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you afraid of?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not afraid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re Margaret. You\u2019re always afraid. You just bully fear until it sits down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I laughed despite myself.<\/p>\n<p>My mother said, \u201cShe\u2019ll think I interfered.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHer business.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI asked Helen for help.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Everything stopped.<\/p>\n<p>Brenda stared at me.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the cassette player.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur said, \u201cHelen told me Louise mentioned the payroll problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut you asked Helen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo the loan was your idea.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My chest tightened.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMartha deserves to know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My mother replied softly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe deserves to know when knowing won\u2019t make her believe the company belongs less to her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur said, \u201cThat day may never come.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My mother answered:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen perhaps you tell her when she is old enough to stop confusing help with weakness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The tape ended shortly afterward.<\/p>\n<p>I sat motionless.<\/p>\n<p>Brenda whispered, \u201cShe arranged it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My mother had seen us failing.<\/p>\n<p>She had gone to Helen.<\/p>\n<p>Helen had used her secret money.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur had accepted.<\/p>\n<p>Three people formed a net beneath me.<\/p>\n<p>And none told me.<\/p>\n<p>I wanted to be angry.<\/p>\n<p>Part of me was.<\/p>\n<p>But another part finally understood the question underneath all these revelations.<\/p>\n<p>Why had everyone believed I would experience help as humiliation?<\/p>\n<p>Because for years, I had.<\/p>\n<p>Prom had taught me that needing less expensive fabric made me vulnerable.<\/p>\n<p>Poverty had taught me dependence could become evidence against me.<\/p>\n<p>So I built an identity around needing nobody.<\/p>\n<p>My mother had seen that.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur had seen it.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps they waited too long to tell me.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps I made telling me difficult.<\/p>\n<p>Both.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Brenda.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think I owe my mother an apology.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSpending fifty-five years thinking she only taught me to endure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked toward the dress.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was trying to teach me how to receive too.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=13226\">Click here to continue reading: PART 23: I Had Built My Life Around Never Needing Rescue, Until David Asked Whether My Pride Had Become Another Kind of Locked Door<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>David rewound the cassette. \u201cAgain,\u201d I said.
