entered.

“What’s that?”

I handed him Brenda’s patch.

He read it.

“That’s surprisingly good.”

“Yes.”

“What are you going to do?”

I looked through the glass at the production floor.

Brenda had suggested displaying the dress here.

Until that moment, I had not decided.

Now I knew.

“Call the carpenter who built the anniversary cases.”

“For what?”

“I want a display cabinet.”

David looked at the dress.

“For that?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

I pointed toward the main lobby.

The place every employee, customer, hospital administrator, hotel buyer and delivery driver passed when entering Caldwell Linens.

David smiled.

“Dad would approve.”

“I think so.”

The case took three weeks.

When it was finished, we placed the dress inside.

Not as evidence of humiliation.

As evidence of origin.

My mother’s letter sat beneath it.

Beside that, Brenda’s pink patch.

And underneath everything, a small plaque told only the necessary truth:

MADE BY MARGARET AND MARTHA HIGGINS, 1971.
KEPT BECAUSE USEFUL THINGS—and PEOPLE—SHOULD NOT BE DISCARDED BECAUSE SOMEONE FAILS TO SEE THEIR VALUE.

On the morning we installed it, I stood alone in the lobby.

Employees passed.

Some stopped.

Some read.

Some simply continued to work.

I thought the story had finally reached the place it belonged.

I was wrong.

At eleven-fifteen, the receptionist called my office.

“Martha, there’s a woman here asking about the dress.”

“Who?”

“She says her name is Evelyn Mercer.”

Mercer.

I stood.

Tommy’s surname.

“What does she want?”

The receptionist lowered her voice.

“She says she has something that belonged to your mother.”

And suddenly, fifty-five years after prom, the blue dress had opened another door I had never known existed.

Click here to continue reading: PART 13: Tommy’s Sister Brought
