photograph.<\/p>\n<p>My mother.<\/p>\n<p>She was standing beside the first industrial washer with one hand on the stainless-steel door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s your dress carefully on the conference table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t want to alter the outside.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I want to add something inside.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I showed her a plain white cloth label I had prepared.<\/p>\n<p>On it, embroidered in small letters, were my mother\u2019s words:<\/p>\n<p>BEING WORN ISN\u2019T THE SAME AS BEING WORTHLESS.<\/p>\n<p>Brenda read them twice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe said that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I was young.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat sounds like something I needed to hear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost of us did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I placed the blue strip beside the label.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to frame the label with this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInside the dress?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo the dress carries the whole story.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brenda looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt began as fabric meant for something else. My mother and I made it into a dress. You turned it into a source of shame.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She winced.<\/p>\n<p>I continued gently.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen she saved it. Ellen protected it. It came back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I touched the cloth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t want to preserve only what happened to it.
