Approximate age. Tennessee and Kentucky connections. He paid a retainer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I pointed at the receipt we had brought.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis says Gerald paid you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLater.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vance turned a page.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI found Rosemary in Kentucky. Before I contacted her, Calvin told me Gerald had agreed to take over the case.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo Gerald came here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did he ask you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo find Rosemary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That aligned with everything.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he mention Claire?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot at first.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Claire\u2019s face tightened.<\/p>\n<p>Vance continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said Rosemary had a daughter adopted at birth. But I\u2019m not sure he knew Rosemary had consented.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I never told him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Claire\u2019s face hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Calvin could have told him anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat exactly did Calvin say to Rosemary?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vance paused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t want contact.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vance frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would he think that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I knew.<\/p>\n<p>The letter.<\/p>\n<p>Gerald had written one in late 1998.<\/p>\n<p>I remembered because I had sorted the stack.<\/p>\n<p>In it, he apologized for disturbing Rosemary and said he would honor her decision.<\/p>\n<p>A decision she never made.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey were both lied would have been about twenty in 1975.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gerald\u2019s age.<\/p>\n<p>Claire whispered, \u201cMaybe Calvin wasn\u2019t trying to find Rosemary for Gerald.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I understood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was trying to find Thomas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The old investigator nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Rosemary may have only been a route to him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We left with copies of Vance\u2019s notes.<\/p>\n<p>Halfway back to Chattanooga, Claire asked me to pull into a roadside diner.<\/p>\n<p>We sat in a booth without ordering food.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you think Thomas was involved in the adoption?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you think he was my father?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The question was so direct it silenced me.<\/p>\n<p>Claire watched nodded.<\/p>\n<p>The search took less than fifteen minutes.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas Porter was alive.<\/p>\n<p>Seventy-one.<\/p>\n<p>Retired pharmacist.<\/p>\n<p>Living outside Knoxville.<\/p>\n<p>A listed number appeared beneath his address.<\/p>\n<p>Claire did not reach for her phone.<\/p>\n<p>Neither did I.<\/p>\n<p>Some doors felt different before opening.<\/p>\n<p>Finally she said, \u201cYou call.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause if he knows my name, I want to see what he says before he knows I\u2019m listening.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I dialed.<\/p>\n<p>A man answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHello?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr. Porter?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy name is Faye Miller.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>Not confusion.<\/p>\n<p>Recognition.<\/p>\n<p>I knew it instantly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGerald Miller\u2019s wife,\u201d I added.<\/p>\n<p>The silence deepened.<\/p>\n<p>Then Thomas Porter said, very
