Thomas\u2019s confession.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My heart stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThomas confessed?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTaking Franklin\u2019s money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat we already know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd to something else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe wrote that he helped move bodies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody spoke.<\/p>\n<p>I stared into the dark corridor beneath my house.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy father moved bodies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Helen\u2019s voice became faint.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter Franklin\u2019s men killed people, Thomas sometimes transported them so the deaths could be staged elsewhere.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I gripped the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRuth?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never knew all the names.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou read the confession.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnly part.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEleanor took it from me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas Thomas forced?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt first.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd later?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Helen could not answer quickly enough.<\/p>\n<p>That was answer enough.<\/p>\n<p>I sat.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas had saved Eleanor.<\/p>\n<p>He had also helped men dispose of the dead.<\/p>\n<p>The neat distinction I wanted between coward and protector dissolved.<\/p>\n<p>He had been both.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe worse.<\/p>\n<p>Brooks spoke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHelen, who had the box after Eleanor?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRobert was supposed to retrieve it after her death.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHas she died?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That sentence brought me back to the immediate danger.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou spoke to Mother recently?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen was the last time?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwo years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe called me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom where?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did she say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat Jason had married Chloe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ashley looked sharply at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwo years ago?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jason and Chloe had been married longer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy only then?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEleanor had not known his full name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChloe used Sterling socially, but Eleanor\u2019s contact knew him by another middle name. When she finally saw a photograph, she recognized Richard in his face.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo she started watching him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThrough whom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe custodian.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho is the custodian?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do not know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I laughed bitterly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnother secret nobody knows.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRobert designed it that way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. Robert participated in it that way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Helen went quiet.<\/p>\n<p>Then she said, \u201cMargaret, the archive beneath your house is not the danger.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe key card.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I touched my pocket.<\/p>\n<p>Robert\u2019s key card.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat about it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt does not open only a storage room.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brooks looked up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat else?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt activates a release protocol.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ashley frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the card is used, copies of the original ledger are sent to multiple recipients.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRecipients who?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen how do you know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRobert told me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would he create that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo make the ledger impossible to suppress.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo why haven\u2019t we used it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Helen\u2019s answer chilled me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause one recipient is Martin Creed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe built himself into the release chain?\u201d Brooks asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would Robert allow that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe didn\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe leak,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Someone had altered the system.<\/p>\n<p>If we used the key card carelessly, we might hand Creed whatever he still lacked.<\/p>\n<p>I removed it from my pocket.<\/p>\n<p>A harmless-looking rectangle.<\/p>\n<p>Robert\u2019s final contingency.<\/p>\n<p>Possibly compromised.<\/p>\n<p>Brooks held out an evidence sleeve.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGive it to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>Then did.<\/p>\n<p>Helen spoke again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is one more thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course there is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe photograph I sent you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe box.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLook beneath it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ashley enlarged the image.<\/p>\n<p>At first I saw nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Then a hand.<\/p>\n<p>Someone holding the box.<\/p>\n<p>A woman\u2019s hand.<\/p>\n<p>A ring.<\/p>\n<p>Blue stone.<\/p>\n<p>I knew that ring.<\/p>\n<p>I had seen it on Eleanor\u2019s finger in old photographs.<\/p>\n<p>But behind the box, blurred in a mirror, stood another person.<\/p>\n<p>Young.<\/p>\n<p>Male.<\/p>\n<p>We magnified the image.<\/p>\n<p>Chloe gasped.<\/p>\n<p>Not Jason.<\/p>\n<p>Richard.<\/p>\n<p>Much younger.<\/p>\n<p>Holding a camera.<\/p>\n<p>The photograph had been taken by someone else while Richard stood nearby.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho took it?\u201d Ashley asked.<\/p>\n<p>Helen\u2019s voice shook.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMartin Creed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My skin went cold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow old is Creed?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOlder than you think.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I remembered Hawthorne\u2019s registered agent. Jason\u2019s attorney.
