housing nonprofit.<\/p>\n<p>Brooks opened nothing until evidence technicians arrived.<\/p>\n<p>I stood beneath my home listening to strangers catalogue a secret my family had maintained longer than I had been alive.<\/p>\n<p>Then Chloe noticed a small envelope taped inside the cabinet door.<\/p>\n<p>MARGARET ONLY.<\/p>\n<p>Robert\u2019s handwriting.<\/p>\n<p>I almost laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brooks photographed it before allowing me to remove it.<\/p>\n<p>The envelope contained a key card and a handwritten note.<\/p>\n<p>Maggie,<\/p>\n<p>If you are reading this, I agreed not to know. That was deliberate. One person cannot betray information he does not possess.<\/p>\n<p>The key card opens a private records room at Union Station Storage, unit level B.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Brooks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan we go?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEventually.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am developing an allergy to that word.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She ignored me.<\/p>\n<p>The final paragraph was underlined.<\/p>\n<p>If Jason Sterling ever enters Chloe\u2019s life, do not confront him until you know whether he is working for Richard or against him.<\/p>\n<p>Too late.<\/p>\n<p>Robert had known Jason\u2019s name before Chloe met him.<\/p>\n<p>Or at least knew the possibility.<\/p>\n<p>My anger returned.<\/p>\n<p>He had left warnings everywhere except where I needed them most: in conversation.<\/p>\n<p>I folded the note.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRobert knew Jason might approach Chloe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ashley read over my shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe knew a Jason Sterling existed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe could have warned us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInstead he created a maze.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vega said quietly, \u201cMaybe because he knew your behavior could be monitored.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>The hidden camera upstairs.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps Robert had anticipated surveillance years before it happened.<\/p>\n<p>Agent Brooks\u2019s technician called from the cabinet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou need to see this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We approached.<\/p>\n<p>He had opened the 2026 file under Brooks\u2019s authorization.<\/p>\n<p>Inside were property records.<\/p>\n<p>Dozens of homes.<\/p>\n<p>Mostly owned by older women.<\/p>\n<p>Widows.<\/p>\n<p>Single women.<\/p>\n<p>Women who inherited property.<\/p>\n<p>Beside each address were corporate acquisition notes.<\/p>\n<p>Some properties had been transferred recently.<\/p>\n<p>Several transactions involved powers of attorney.<\/p>\n<p>My stomach turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt never stopped.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brooks nodded grimly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe pattern may still be operating.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis year?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ashley examined a spreadsheet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSame structure. Distressed debt, family intermediary, rapid transfer to LLC.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chloe stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened to Mom happened to all of them?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t know yet,\u201d Brooks said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut possibly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chloe backed against the concrete wall.<\/p>\n<p>She understood the difference between being part of one betrayal and becoming part of a machine.<\/p>\n<p>Brooks opened another file.<\/p>\n<p>Photographs showed a woman standing outside a brick townhouse.<\/p>\n<p>On the next page was a deed.<\/p>\n<p>Then a death notice.<\/p>\n<p>Then another woman.<\/p>\n<p>Another deed.<\/p>\n<p>Another obituary.<\/p>\n<p>Not proof of murder.<\/p>\n<p>But enough to make the air feel colder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho assembled this?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo identification yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A technician pulled a small digital recorder from the box.<\/p>\n<p>Label:<\/p>\n<p>FOR E.V. \u2014 AUGUST 2026.<\/p>\n<p>One month ago.<\/p>\n<p>Eleanor had received\u2014or was supposed to receive\u2014information from whoever maintained the archive.<\/p>\n<p>Brooks inserted fresh batteries after documenting the device.<\/p>\n<p>A man\u2019s voice began.<\/p>\n<p>I recognized it immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Wallace.<\/p>\n<p>The cemetery caretaker.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you\u2019re hearing this, Eleanor, the Sterling boy has begun moving.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chloe closed her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Wallace continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJason has been visiting the cemetery without Margaret knowing. Three times this year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at Vega.<\/p>\n<p>Wallace had known more than he told me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFirst time, he photographed Robert\u2019s marker. Second time, he tried the maintenance office. Third time, he brought another man.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The recording rustled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI recognized the other man.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMartin Creed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ashley whispered a curse.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCreed asked whether Robert had visitors in his final year. I told them no.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was a lie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My pulse quickened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRobert had one regular visitor besides you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I leaned toward the recorder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA woman came every month during his last year. She never gave me her real name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eleanor?<\/p>\n<p>But Wallace continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was too young to be Eleanor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We exchanged looks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe said she was carrying on Ruth Sterling\u2019s work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ruth had died decades earlier.<\/p>\n<p>Who could be carrying it on?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe told Robert the old network had restarted under new leadership. Not Richard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jason?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRobert asked her who.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Static interrupted.<\/p>\n<p>Then Wallace\u2019s voice returned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe said Martin Creed had spent years rebuilding the operation using descendants who inherited both money and influence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That fit.<\/p>\n<p>Creed.<\/p>\n<p>Reddick.<\/p>\n<p>Others.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut Creed was not the person Robert feared most.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt a chill.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe feared the person inside the family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Which family?<\/p>\n<p>The recording answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomeone descended from Eleanor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chloe whispered, \u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the recorder.<\/p>\n<p>Wallace continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRobert said the network had learned long ago that the easiest way to defeat the Vance trust was not to attack the women from outside.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My skin prickled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was to recruit one of them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chloe went pale.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>The obvious interpretation was brutal.<\/p>\n<p>But Robert had made this recording before Chloe sold the house.<\/p>\n<p>Had he predicted her betrayal?<\/p>\n<p>Or was he speaking about someone else?<\/p>\n<p>The audio continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEleanor, you told Robert the danger would eventually come through blood.
