would he lie if he didn’t do it?”

Harrison answered carefully.

“Because knowing about a possible crime creates questions.”

Marianne began crying.

“I asked Victor whether Thomas was in danger.”

“What did he say?”

“He said Thomas had become impossible to manage.”

“Exact words?”

“I don’t remember.”

“What do you remember?”

Marianne wiped her face.

“He told me not to worry because he would deal with it.”

Mark went pale.

“Deal with Thomas?”

“I assumed.”

“Did you ask how?”

“No.”

“Why not?”

Marianne’s answer came quietly.

“Because I didn’t want to know.”

The room fell silent.

There it was again.

The sentence that had protected the Whitmore machinery for years.

I didn’t want to know.

Emily thought of Richard.

Evelyn.

Mark.

Thomas.

Marianne.

Different degrees of responsibility.

Same refuge.

Harrison asked what happened on the day Thomas died.

Marianne stared at the table.

“Victor called me.”

“When?”

“About an hour before the accident.”

“Why?”

“He wanted access to Northstar.”

“For what?”

“To check whether Thomas had reached one of the accounts.”

“Did you give it to him?”

“Yes.”

“Where was Victor?”

“I don’t know.”

Phone records could answer that.

A subpoena was already moving.

The results came late that afternoon.

Victor’s primary phone had connected to towers near Whitmore Manor for most of the evening.

But a secondary device linked to him through Northline records had traveled.

At 7:42 p.m., it pinged near Thomas’s office.

At 8:31, near the repair shop that had serviced his brakes.

At 9:17, near the rural road where Thomas crashed forty minutes later.

Mark stared at the map.

Emily felt nothing for several seconds.

Then Harrison said the only responsible thing.

“Location data places a device associated with Victor in those areas. It does not prove Victor possessed it or caused the crash.”

Emily nodded.

But the map was no longer ambiguous in the way everything else had been.

Someone using Victor’s device had followed Thomas toward the place where he died.

At 6:12, investigators received another result.

The old repair shop had retained archived exterior security footage longer than expected because its insurer had copied data after a burglary that same month.

Technicians located the relevant night.

A man entered the rear service lot after closing.

The image was poor.

His face was not visible.

But he wore a distinctive ring on his right hand.

Square.

Black.

Emily had seen it before.

Victor’s ring.

Click here to continue reading: PART 18: The Repair-Shop Footage Put Victor Beside Thomas’s Car, Yet His Next Message Forced Emily to Question Who Had Ordered the Fatal Sabotage

For several seconds after Emily read the final line, nobody in Martha’s dining room spoke.
