uncertainty.<\/p>\n<p>We waited.<\/p>\n<p>At 4:52, Nadia whispered through my earpiece.<\/p>\n<p>Vehicle approaching west service road.<\/p>\n<p>Martin noticed my expression.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re wired.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He almost smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A dark SUV entered through an old contractor gate.<\/p>\n<p>The gate had opened with a credential Martin apparently left active.<\/p>\n<p>One vehicle.<\/p>\n<p>Two occupants.<\/p>\n<p>Pierce was not coming alone.<\/p>\n<p>At 4:56, footsteps crossed the shop floor.<\/p>\n<p>Martin stood.<\/p>\n<p>Pain folded him slightly.<\/p>\n<p>He drew a pistol from the desk.<\/p>\n<p>I stepped back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPut it down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou wanted a witness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wanted insurance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The office door opened.<\/p>\n<p>Jonathan Pierce resumed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith a failed pressure sensor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was told the fault had been cleared.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin raised the pistol.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pierce looked at him without fear.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou bypassed the interlock, Martin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was following your order.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. You were showing your father you were important.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin flinched.<\/p>\n<p>Pierce saw it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo that\u2019s what this is. Twelve years and you still need somebody else to have pulled your hand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin\u2019s pistol rose another inch.<\/p>\n<p>I said his name.<\/p>\n<p>He ignored me.<\/p>\n<p>Pierce continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRobert knew exactly what you did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShut up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was going to report you too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin\u2019s face changed.<\/p>\n<p>That was new.<\/p>\n<p>He looked toward the folder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pierce smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou never read the missing page?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin stared.<\/p>\n<p>Pierce reached into his coat.<\/p>\n<p>Martin aimed.<\/p>\n<p>The bodyguard aimed at Martin.<\/p>\n<p>I dropped behind the desk.<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz shouted through my earpiece.<\/p>\n<p>Police breached.<\/p>\n<p>Pierce\u2019s hand came out holding paper, not a gun.<\/p>\n<p>The bodyguard fired first.<\/p>\n<p>Martin fired almost simultaneously.<\/p>\n<p>Glass exploded.<\/p>\n<p>Officers poured through both entrances.<\/p>\n<p>The bodyguard went down wounded.<\/p>\n<p>Pierce dropped to his knees.<\/p>\n<p>Martin collapsed behind Thomas\u2019s desk.<\/p>\n<p>I crawled toward him.<\/p>\n<p>His pistol lay several feet away.<\/p>\n<p>Blood spread rapidly across his shirt.<\/p>\n<p>He looked at Pierce.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pierce stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGo to hell.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz handcuffed Pierce.<\/p>\n<p>I took the folded paper from where he had dropped it.<\/p>\n<p>It was part of Robert\u2019s statement.<\/p>\n<p>The final paragraph.<\/p>\n<p>I read it.<\/p>\n<p>Robert had written:<\/p>\n<p>Martin restored the bypass against my instruction. Jonathan demanded output, but my son made the choice.
