16 – Returning to Northfield Exposed the Furnace Secret Martin Blamed Me For, but the Person Holding Margaret Was Not Martin Vale

Ortiz refused to let me go alone.

That was not surprising.

What surprised me was how quickly everyone agreed the message was probably designed to make me ignore exactly that advice.

Martin knew I would distrust obvious instructions by now.

Which meant the phrase COME ALONE could be reverse psychology.

Or genuine.

There was no clean interpretation left.

Federal agents coordinated with local police around Northfield Thermal Processing.

The plant sat forty miles away in an industrial valley lined with warehouses, rail sidings, and chemical storage tanks.

It was where I had worked twelve years earlier.

Where Robert Vale had died.

Where my name first entered the Vale family’s story.

The drive took forty-eight minutes.

I spent most of it trying to remember the old layout.

Furnace building.

Control room.

Maintenance tunnel.

Loading docks.

Quality lab.

The plant had expanded since then, but industrial buildings rarely forgot their original bones.

Walter wanted to come.

I told him no.

Samuel wanted to come.

Ortiz told him no.

Nadia came in the command vehicle because investigators needed technical access.

At 3:07 a.m., we stopped half a mile from the facility.

Most of Northfield was dark.

One furnace building still had power.

The old one.

Building C.

Of course.

Police established a perimeter.

No vehicles left.

Thermal imaging showed at least three people inside.

Possibly four.

One near the main control room.

Two near the furnace floor.

One intermittent heat signature that might have been equipment rather than a person.

My phone received another message.

PARKER ONLY.

Then:

THREE MINUTES.

Ortiz looked at it.

“They’re watching.”

“Probably cameras.”

“Can Nadia kill them?”

“Maybe.”

Nadia shook her head.

“Not without potentially alerting whoever’s inside.”

I looked at Ortiz.

“If they compromised.

Body armor under my jacket.

Audio transmitter.

Two tactical teams staged at separate entry points.

I would enter through the old employee door.

Not alone in any meaningful sense.

But visibly alone.

At 3:16, I crossed the parking lot.

The plant smell returned before the memories did.

Oil.

Hot dust.

Old insulation.

Metal.

Even shut down, heat-treatment facilities retained a dry burned smell that settled into concrete.

The employee door unlocked before I touched it.

Someone controlled access remotely.

I entered.

Lights came on one section at a time.

Leading me.

That made me angry enough to stay calm.

The first message appeared on an old production monitor.

CONTROL ROOM.

I knew the route.

Nothing had changed as much as I expected.

New guarding.

New floor markings.

Same steel columns.

Same sound of ventilation ducts expanding and contracting.

My hands remembered the place before my mind did.

The control room door stood open.

Inside sat Margaret Vale.

Alive.

Tied to a chair.

A strip of tape over her mouth.

I moved
