Behind the glass, the figure Claire had identified was gone.<\/p>\n<p>Martin Vale was Horizon\u2019s executive vice president of strategy and a nonvoting adviser to the board. He had joined the company four years earlier, supposedly to guide expansion, acquisitions, and major customer programs. He rarely appeared on the production floor. He preferred conference rooms, forecasts, and language like strategic alignment.<\/p>\n<p>He had also chaired every internal Meridian program review for the previous six months.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel stared toward the staircase.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you certain?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Claire nodded. \u201cI heard his voice before I saw him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard moved closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat exactly did he tell you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat Tyler was temporary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. Before that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe asked whether you had told them about Calder.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard\u2019s face tightened.<\/p>\n<p>Claire looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe knew Ethan had found the altered parameters. He knew Samuel had seen the incident report. He knew the hidden routine might be discovered.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nadia glanced at the dead network connection on her laptop.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe also knew enough about the infrastructure to knock out the production network without killing the executive wing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel turned toward the nearest emergency phone.<\/p>\n<p>The line was dead.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFacility security?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Walter checked his radio.<\/p>\n<p>Static.<\/p>\n<p>Mason crossed toward the electrical cabinet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMain distribution\u2019s still healthy. This wasn\u2019t a normal utility loss.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked around Bay Three.<\/p>\n<p>Most emergency lights were battery-backed. The machining center had shut down safely when power disappeared. The qualification part remained clamped inside.<\/p>\n<p>Seven minutes had separated us from the hidden routine triggering.<\/p>\n<p>That felt deliberate now too.<\/p>\n<p>Someone had cut power immediately after realizing we had discovered the second layer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re buying time,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo erase something. Leave. Or force us to make a bad decision.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard shook his head. \u201cMartin won\u2019t run. He has too much invested here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe that\u2019s exactly why he will.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel pointed toward Walter and Mason.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStay with the machine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then he looked at Nadia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan you bring the internal network back?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the core switches are powered, maybe. If someone pulled them physically, no.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFind out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She hurried toward IT.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel turned to me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re with me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard stepped forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo am I.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel\u2019s expression hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re not exactly cleared of suspicion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know Martin better than Ethan does.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat didn\u2019t help us earlier.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard absorbed the blow.<\/p>\n<p>Then he said, \u201cIf Martin thinks I\u2019ve turned on him, I\u2019m already a liability.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That argument was hard to dismiss.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel finally nodded.<\/p>\n<p>Claire said, \u201cI\u2019m coming too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can identify him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe already have his name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have more than one person using cloned credentials, spoofed accounts, fake instructions, and hidden routes through this building. If you see Martin and he tells you I\u2019m lying, what happens?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel considered that.<\/p>\n<p>Then nodded once.<\/p>\n<p>We took the stairs.<\/p>\n<p>The executive wing felt unnaturally quiet.<\/p>\n<p>Normally the carpeted hallway insulated itself from the production floor. Now, with most of the factory dark below, every footstep sounded too loud.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel tried Martin\u2019s office first.<\/p>\n<p>Locked.<\/p>\n<p>Richard used his executive badge.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBadge system\u2019s down,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the door frame.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMechanical override?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel reached above the molding and removed a narrow emergency key from a coded cabinet.<\/p>\n<p>The lock opened.<\/p>\n<p>Martin\u2019s office was empty.<\/p>\n<p>The desk looked clean.<\/p>\n<p>Too clean.<\/p>\n<p>No folders. His wife and daughter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard opened a drawer.<\/p>\n<p>Empty.<\/p>\n<p>Another.<\/p>\n<p>Also empty.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis wasn\u2019t done in the last five minutes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>Martin had prepared to leave.<\/p>\n<p>The question was when.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel moved toward a framed architectural print near the back wall.<\/p>\n<p>Behind it was a small safe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you know the code?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard did.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>Richard\u2019s embarrassment returned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMartin had me retrieve acquisition files twice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOpen it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Inside were three folders and a portable drive.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel removed them.<\/p>\n<p>The first folder contained Calder correspondence.<\/p>\n<p>Not informal messages.<\/p>\n<p>Term sheets.<\/p>\n<p>Valuation models.<\/p>\n<p>Post-acquisition organization charts.<\/p>\n<p>On one page, Horizon Precision was listed as a future Calder operating division.<\/p>\n<p>Under executive leadership:<\/p>\n<p>MARTIN VALE \u2014 PRESIDENT, HORIZON OPERATIONS.<\/p>\n<p>Richard\u2019s name appeared lower.<\/p>\n<p>REGIONAL OPERATIONS VP.<\/p>\n<p>Richard read it twice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe told me I\u2019d be president.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No one answered.<\/p>\n<p>He looked at Samuel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe lied to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel\u2019s voice was flat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou sold yourself cheaply enough that he could afford to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard flinched.<\/p>\n<p>The second folder was worse.<\/p>\n<p>It contained contingency planning.<\/p>\n<p>The language was polished, detached, and corporate.<\/p>\n<p>Scenario A: Meridian award.<\/p>\n<p>Scenario B: Meridian delay.<\/p>\n<p>Scenario C: Meridian qualification failure.<\/p>\n<p>Next to Scenario C were projected impacts.<\/p>\n<p>Revenue decline.<\/p>\n<p>Reduced valuation.<\/p>\n<p>Workforce instability.<\/p>\n<p>Lender pressure.<\/p>\n<p>Renewed acquisition opportunity.<\/p>\n<p>Claire whispered, \u201cThey modeled this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned pages.<\/p>\n<p>A line was highlighted.<\/p>\n<p>Operational disruption increases board receptivity to strategic transaction.<\/p>\n<p>It had never been about one machine.<\/p>\n<p>The machine was a lever.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel read the sentence without speaking.<\/p>\n<p>The third folder contained names.<\/p>\n<p>Employees.<\/p>\n<p>Directors.<\/p>\n<p>Managers.<\/p>\n<p>Beside each was a category.<\/p>\n<p>Supportive.<\/p>\n<p>Neutral.<\/p>\n<p>Resistant.<\/p>\n<p>Vulnerable.<\/p>\n<p>My name appeared under resistant.<\/p>\n<p>A note followed.<\/p>\n<p>Technical dependency high. Removal before qualification preferred.<\/p>\n<p>Another line sat beneath it.<\/p>\n<p>Post-separation event attribution viable if access trail preserved.<\/p>\n<p>I stopped reading.<\/p>\n<p>There it was.<\/p>\n<p>My termination and the framing plan, reduced to a bullet point.<\/p>\n<p>Richard looked over my shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>His face went gray.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never saw this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I believed him.<\/p>\n<p>Not because he deserved belief.<\/p>\n<p>Because the document made clear what he had been.<\/p>\n<p>Not a partner.<\/p>\n<p>A tool.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel reached for the portable drive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan we read this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot on any machine here until Nadia checks it,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>He slipped it into his pocket.<\/p>\n<p>Then Claire noticed something under the desk.<\/p>\n<p>A torn strip of paper.<\/p>\n<p>She picked it up.<\/p>\n<p>Only part of the text remained.<\/p>\n<p>\u2026hangar 12\u2026<br \/>\n\u202621:30\u2026<br \/>\n\u2026Brooks transfer\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Richard took it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTyler.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel checked his watch.<\/p>\n<p>7:14.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwo hours.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCould be a trap,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCould be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut it\u2019s the first location we have.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard looked toward the door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMartin has a plane.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot his. Calder\u2019s.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel\u2019s expression sharpened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExplain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI saw an itinerary on his calendar last month. Charter flights through County Executive Air.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Claire looked at the torn paper.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHangar Twelve.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard nodded.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel pulled out his phone again.<\/p>\n<p>Still no signal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need law enforcement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo argument,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut if Martin controls internal communications and Tyler\u2019s being moved at 9:30, we can\u2019t assume we have unlimited time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re not thinking of going there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m thinking of not losing the first useful lead we\u2019ve had.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo one goes anywhere until police know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was the right decision.<\/p>\n<p>It was also one someone like Martin would expect.<\/p>\n<p>We returned toward the stairs.<\/p>\n<p>Halfway down, all factory lights came back.<\/p>\n<p>Machines remained stopped, but overhead LEDs flashed on in sequence.<\/p>\n<p>My phone connected.<\/p>\n<p>Messages arrived at once.<\/p>\n<p>Missed calls.<\/p>\n<p>Security alerts.<\/p>\n<p>One message from Nadia.<\/p>\n<p>CORE SWITCH PHYSICALLY DISCONNECTED. RESTORING NOW.<\/p>\n<p>Another came immediately after.<\/p>\n<p>DANIEL FOUND.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel read it over my shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A new message appeared.<\/p>\n<p>SECURITY ARCHIVE ROOM. ALIVE.<\/p>\n<p>We ran.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel Ross was sitting against a wall when we reached the archive room. His wrists were bound with cable ties. A bruise darkened his left temple.<\/p>\n<p>A security officer crouched beside him.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel looked up at Samuel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMartin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel knelt.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe asked me to check a camera fault around five-thirty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomeone hit me from behind.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou saw who?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour administrative credentials?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToken was on my belt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nadia held up a black security key.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFound it on the floor outside the server room.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel closed his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey used me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The phrase had become the day\u2019s refrain.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel asked, \u201cDid you create the cloned badge profiles?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe logs say your admin account did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nadia said, \u201cIf they had his token and PIN\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel interrupted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy PIN wasn\u2019t written down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Everyone looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho knew it?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard gave him a look.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>Then corrected himself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMartin saw me enter it once.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThree weeks ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Again.<\/p>\n<p>Three weeks.<\/p>\n<p>The same narrow window in which everything had changed.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCall police. Full report.
