It connected to an old document-storage corridor used before the second-floor expansion.<\/p>\n<p>I ran through it.<\/p>\n<p>At the far end, another door was closing.<\/p>\n<p>I reached it seconds too late.<\/p>\n<p>The stairwell beyond was empty.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel came behind me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho was that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Claire stood at the corridor entrance.<\/p>\n<p>She looked terrified.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can explain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I had heard that sentence too many times that day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen start.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wasn\u2019t helping them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were meeting someone secretly while using Daniel\u2019s credential.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was told to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy whom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo find out what they wanted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho told you to do that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Claire looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did no such thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her confusion looked genuine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, you did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwenty minutes ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel took out his phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was downstairs with Meridian.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Claire\u2019s breathing changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe message came from your executive account.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nadia arrived moments later.<\/p>\n<p>She checked Claire\u2019s phone.<\/p>\n<p>The message appeared authentic.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel\u2019s internal account.<\/p>\n<p>Instructions to enter Engineering Records using a security credential left in her desk drawer.<\/p>\n<p>Meet the contact.<\/p>\n<p>Say as little as possible.<\/p>\n<p>Report back privately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s spoofed,\u201d Nadia said after examining the routing.<\/p>\n<p>Claire looked sick.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey used me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel looked toward the empty stairwell.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho did you meet?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI couldn\u2019t see him clearly at first.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut you heard him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you recognize the voice?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Claire hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>Then nodded.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel\u2019s expression hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Before she answered, my phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>Unknown number.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone looked at it.<\/p>\n<p>I answered.<\/p>\n<p>No one spoke for several seconds.<\/p>\n<p>Then Tyler\u2019s voice came through.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEthan?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I put the call on speaker.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTyler. Where are you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t tell you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you safe?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard arrived at the corridor entrance and froze when he heard Tyler.<\/p>\n<p>Tyler continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey know qualification is still running.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have to stop it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEthan, listen to me. The parameter changes weren\u2019t the real sabotage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Every muscle in my body tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe machine failure was supposed to make you repair it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked toward Samuel.<\/p>\n<p>Tyler\u2019s breathing was ragged.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey needed you to restore the system from the baseline.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause the baseline is compromised.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Walter\u2019s inspection had verified the visible parameters.<\/p>\n<p>Mason had verified the PLC image.<\/p>\n<p>But the machine contained other layers.<\/p>\n<p>Firmware.<\/p>\n<p>Macros.<\/p>\n<p>Hidden service routines.<\/p>\n<p>I started moving toward the stairs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did they change?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know exactly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTyler.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI swear. I only changed what Richard sent me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho changed the baseline?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never saw him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI heard them call him\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A noise interrupted him.<\/p>\n<p>Tyler stopped speaking.<\/p>\n<p>Then whispered, \u201cThey found me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The call ended.<\/p>\n<p>I ran.<\/p>\n<p>Downstairs, the Meridian machine was beginning its next qualification cycle.<\/p>\n<p>Walter looked up as I entered Bay Three.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEthan?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStop the machine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStop it now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He hit cycle hold.<\/p>\n<p>The spindle slowed.<\/p>\n<p>The Meridian representatives looked confused.<\/p>\n<p>I went to the service menu.<\/p>\n<p>Nadia reached me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are we looking for?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnything that survived restoration.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mason joined us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe PLC matched.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I opened protected macro storage.<\/p>\n<p>Normal.<\/p>\n<p>Firmware checksum.<\/p>\n<p>Normal.<\/p>\n<p>Then Walter pointed at the screen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A service process was scheduled to execute after a specific spindle-hour threshold.<\/p>\n<p>It had not triggered yet.<\/p>\n<p>I opened the routine.<\/p>\n<p>Nadia leaned closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does it do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I read the commands twice.<\/p>\n<p>Then a third time.<\/p>\n<p>It would disable lubrication monitoring during a high-speed spindle operation while continuing to report normal sensor status to the controller.<\/p>\n<p>The machine would believe lubrication was flowing.<\/p>\n<p>It would continue running.<\/p>\n<p>Until the spindle bearings overheated.<\/p>\n<p>At qualification speed, failure could destroy the spindle.<\/p>\n<p>Possibly much more.<\/p>\n<p>Walter whispered, \u201cThat could wreck the machine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen does it trigger?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mason checked the runtime counter.<\/p>\n<p>His face changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeven minutes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Seven minutes.<\/p>\n<p>If Tyler had not called, we would have restarted the cycle.<\/p>\n<p>The sabotage had been designed in layers.<\/p>\n<p>The first failure brought me back.<\/p>\n<p>My restoration returned the machine to a trusted baseline.<\/p>\n<p>The hidden routine then used that trust against us.<\/p>\n<p>Whoever planned this understood more than machine controls.<\/p>\n<p>They understood how I worked.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel reached Bay Three with Claire and Richard.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you find?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I showed him.<\/p>\n<p>Richard stared at the routine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never saw that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked surprised.<\/p>\n<p>That frightened him more than accusation would have.<\/p>\n<p>Because it meant I now believed somebody far more capable was directing him.<\/p>\n<p>Nadia traced the routine\u2019s creation metadata.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTimestamp is three weeks old.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The same period when the cloned credentials appeared.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel looked at Claire.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were about to tell us who you met.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Claire nodded slowly.<\/p>\n<p>Richard turned toward her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>Then at Samuel.<\/p>\n<p>Finally at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was someone from the Meridian program review committee.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard\u2019s face tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cName.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Claire swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>Before she could speak, the overhead lights flickered.<\/p>\n<p>Once.<\/p>\n<p>Twice.<\/p>\n<p>Then Bay Three went dark.<\/p>\n<p>Emergency lights came on a second later.<\/p>\n<p>The Meridian machine remained silent.<\/p>\n<p>Across the factory, alarms began sounding as equipment lost power.<\/p>\n<p>Nadia looked at her laptop.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNetwork just went down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel pulled out his phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo service.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Walter moved toward the aisle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMain power?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d Mason said. \u201cEmergency circuits are still live.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked toward the second-floor offices.<\/p>\n<p>One section still had full lighting.<\/p>\n<p>The executive conference wing.<\/p>\n<p>Then a figure appeared behind the glass.<\/p>\n<p>Standing alone.<\/p>\n<p>Watching Bay Three.<\/p>\n<p>Claire saw him too.<\/p>\n<p>Her breath caught.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The man turned away from the window.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel started toward the stairs.<\/p>\n<p>I caught his arm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho is it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Claire answered before he could.<\/p>\n<p>And the name she gave us finally connected the board-office orders, Calder\u2019s interest in Horizon, the compromised investigation, and the plan to destroy Meridian qualification.<\/p>\n<p>The person above Richard had not been hiding outside the company.<\/p>\n<p>He had been inside Horizon\u2019s highest-level meetings from the beginning.<\/p>\n<p>And now he knew we had found the second layer of sabotage.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a
