\u201cMom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did remember your birthday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had your card in my car.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That hurt unexpectedly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI bought it two weeks earlier.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened to it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI threw it away after the garage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I couldn\u2019t stand looking at it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGoodbye, Daniel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He understood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGoodbye, Mom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The call ended.<\/p>\n<p>I remained at the table until evening.<\/p>\n<p>Then Elaine arrived.<\/p>\n<p>Not called.<\/p>\n<p>Arrived.<\/p>\n<p>She carried a thin folder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou look terrible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThank you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMay I come in?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She sat opposite me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaniel\u2019s account is gaining support.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGarage footage shows Rourke entering through the lower level and leaving approximately six minutes after Michael was injured. Daniel appears shortly before, then leaves. Kessler appears afterward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoes it show the assault?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot directly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRourke?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPolice found him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My chest tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe has counsel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone has counsel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA healthy development for civilization.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat else?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis phone places him at the garage. There are messages from a lender tied to Michael.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVale?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo proven connection yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo Kessler may have blamed Daniel to improve his own position.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPossibly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou enjoy that word now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI enjoy annoying you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She opened the folder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s something else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInvestigators found the second copy Michael mentioned.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSafe deposit box.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn whose name?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaniel\u2019s.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe had it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cApparently.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe just told me he didn\u2019t know where the other copies were.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Elaine\u2019s expression hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen either he lied to you, or Michael put it there without telling him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan that happen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe box was jointly accessible through a company arrangement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Another uncertainty.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is on the drive?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re still processing it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd the third copy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMissing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho might have it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Elaine slid one page toward me.<\/p>\n<p>A bank access record.<\/p>\n<p>The box had been opened once after Michael was attacked.<\/p>\n<p>Not by Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>Not Michael.<\/p>\n<p>An authorized representative had used old corporate credentials.<\/p>\n<p>The signature belonged to Charles Vale.<\/p>\n<p>But the drive remained there.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo he opened the box and left the copy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the access date.<\/p>\n<p>The morning after my birthday.<\/p>\n<p>Before Vale understood how much evidence we had.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe he checked.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe he copied.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe he planted something.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cElaine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Vale accessed that drive, how do we know what was originally on it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was the problem with evidence handled by liars.<\/p>\n<p>Even truth acquired fingerprints.<\/p>\n<p>My phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>Michael\u2019s lawyer.<\/p>\n<p>I answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMrs. Mendoza, Michael has authorized me to tell you something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere were only two copies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaniel said Michael told him three.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe lied.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo make Vale believe destroying one or two copies would never be enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Of course.<\/p>\n<p>A bluff.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere was the second?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe safe deposit box.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Daniel know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy use something Daniel could access?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Michael believed Vale would look first at his own accounts and storage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo Daniel told me the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn that point, apparently.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Elaine.<\/p>\n<p>She understood from my face.<\/p>\n<p>Then the lawyer continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is one more thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMichael confirms Rourke knew about the guardianship.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMichael told him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I shut my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe used the expected property sale to secure an extension on his debt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There it was.<\/p>\n<p>Michael had not merely hoped my property would save him.<\/p>\n<p>He had promised other people that my legal control would be removed so the property could be sold.<\/p>\n<p>The guardianship had become collateral before it was even granted.<\/p>\n<p>I felt something inside me go quiet.<\/p>\n<p>Not break.<\/p>\n<p>Finish.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTell Michael I heard you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMrs. Mendoza\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I ended the call.<\/p>\n<p>Elaine waited.<\/p>\n<p>I told her.<\/p>\n<p>She did not swear.<\/p>\n<p>I did.<\/p>\n<p>Then I stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happens to the guardianship petition?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGiven your independent medical evaluation, the evidence of preplanning, conflicts, and the petitioners\u2019 admissions, it is effectively finished. Formal dismissal should follow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Vale?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis problems are multiplying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy children?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDifferent problems for each.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the dark kitchen window.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Elaine closed the folder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou go on living.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The answer sounded almost absurd.<\/p>\n<p>After all this machinery.<\/p>\n<p>Trusts.<\/p>\n<p>Lawyers.<\/p>\n<p>Police.<\/p>\n<p>Hidden rooms.<\/p>\n<p>Forged signatures.<\/p>\n<p>A mother still had to wake the next morning and decide what to eat for breakfast.<\/p>\n<p>Before Elaine left, she handed me one final sheet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour updated medical directive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I read the names.<\/p>\n<p>Elaine as temporary professional contact pending my future choice.<\/p>\n<p>No child.<\/p>\n<p>No Gabriel.<\/p>\n<p>No automatic family authority.<\/p>\n<p>My life legally returned to the person who had always been living it.<\/p>\n<p>I signed.<\/p>\n<p>Then I looked at the signature.<\/p>\n<p>Teresa Aguilar Mendoza.<\/p>\n<p>Mine.<\/p>\n<p>No forgery.<\/p>\n<p>No witness deciding whether I understood.<\/p>\n<p>No child waiting to override me.<\/p>\n<p>Just my hand.<\/p>\n<p>My choice.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=12819\">Click here to continue reading: PART 22: The Guardianship Case Finally Died in Court, but I Used My Victory to Tell My Children What None of Them Wanted to Hear<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I did not call Daniel.
