Questioned under warrant-related procedures.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKessler changed his statement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel stopped walking.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did he say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Elaine paused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe says Vale ordered him to recover the files from Unit 314 at any cost.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt any cost is still vague.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnything about Michael?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKessler says Vale told him Michael could not be allowed to leave the garage with a second copy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My hand tightened around Gabriel\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Kessler hit him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen who did?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe named someone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Elaine\u2019s next words stopped me in the middle of the sidewalk.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaniel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For one second, I thought I had misheard.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy Daniel?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKessler claims Daniel was in the garage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTeresa\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaniel was with us later.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat does not answer where he was earlier.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I let go of Gabriel\u2019s hand.<\/p>\n<p>The world around me remained painfully ordinary.<\/p>\n<p>Gutter repair.<\/p>\n<p>Dog barking.<\/p>\n<p>Wind.<\/p>\n<p>I said, \u201cWhy would Daniel attack Michael?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoes Daniel admit being there?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe hasn\u2019t been asked yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen ask him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPolice will.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My chest tightened.<\/p>\n<p>One more layer.<\/p>\n<p>One more secret.<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel said quietly, \u201cTeresa.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I shook my head.<\/p>\n<p>Not now.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>The peacekeeper.<\/p>\n<p>The brother who warned me.<\/p>\n<p>The son who claimed he had tried to stop Michael.<\/p>\n<p>The one who remembered my birthday and still chose silence.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps I had not yet understood what he was capable of when peace failed.<\/p>\n<p>Elaine said, \u201cGo home. Do not contact Daniel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost objected.<\/p>\n<p>Then stopped.<\/p>\n<p>Choice did not always mean acting immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes it meant refusing impulse.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We turned back toward the house.<\/p>\n<p>At my front steps, Gabriel said, \u201cDo you want me to stay?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>Every old version of myself wanted company.<\/p>\n<p>Protection.<\/p>\n<p>Someone nearby while the next truth arrived.<\/p>\n<p>But I needed to know whether I could sit alone with uncertainty and not collapse.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCall if you need me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He left.<\/p>\n<p>Inside, I locked the door.<\/p>\n<p>Then I sat at the kitchen table.<\/p>\n<p>My phone remained silent for twelve minutes.<\/p>\n<p>Then Daniel called.<\/p>\n<p>I did not answer.<\/p>\n<p>He called again.<\/p>\n<p>Then a message appeared.<\/p>\n<p>Mom, the police are here. Kessler lied.
