Or my house keys.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI understand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m trying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was enough for the moment.<\/p>\n<p>Before leaving, Daniel looked at the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad would hate this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll of us talking separately.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I thought about it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel looked surprised.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think your father would hate losing control over how the story gets told.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel laughed.<\/p>\n<p>A real laugh.<\/p>\n<p>So did I.<\/p>\n<p>It felt disloyal.<\/p>\n<p>Then freeing.<\/p>\n<p>The next day, Elaine called.<\/p>\n<p>Kessler had begun cooperating.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe says Vale ordered him to recover files from Unit 314.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot surprising.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe denies assaulting Michael.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo police believe him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey don\u2019t decide belief yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does he say happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe claims another man was watching Michael.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe doesn\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConvenient.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat else?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe says Vale asked him to destroy one item.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA signed memo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom Robert?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen who?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVale.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did it say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKessler says it documented Vale\u2019s agreement to receive a success fee from Michael\u2019s transaction and acknowledged that emergency guardianship might be required to complete the sale.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe wrote that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cApparently.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Kessler destroyed it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe says he burned the original.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My anger rose.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen it\u2019s gone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That word again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKessler photographed it first.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Of course.<\/p>\n<p>Leverage.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone around Vale had learned his method.<\/p>\n<p>Keep copies.<\/p>\n<p>Keep insurance.<\/p>\n<p>Keep secrets.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo police have the photo?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Elaine was quiet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s another development.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVale wants to negotiate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith prosecutors?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTeresa, this is not solely your decision.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe is offering records and cooperation in exchange for reduced exposure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExposure for what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFraud-related conduct. Obstruction possibilities. Professional misconduct. Potential conspiracy theories depending on what prosecutors establish.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I walked to the window.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoes he admit the guardianship scheme?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen he is not cooperating. He is bargaining.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Elaine said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWill I have to meet him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then I asked, \u201cWhat about Michael?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe may face charges.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My chest tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFinancial misuse. Forgery. Fraud-related conduct. You know how to reach me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A pause.<\/p>\n<p>Then:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am sorry for the part I chose.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Not everything.<\/p>\n<p>Not Robert.<\/p>\n<p>Not fate.<\/p>\n<p>His part.<\/p>\n<p>The message ended.<\/p>\n<p>I sat with the phone in my hand.<\/p>\n<p>Then deleted nothing.<\/p>\n<p>The next morning, an envelope arrived by courier.<\/p>\n<p>No return address.<\/p>\n<p>Inside was a photocopy of a document.<\/p>\n<p>Vale\u2019s success-fee memo.<\/p>\n<p>At the bottom, handwritten in his own notes:<\/p>\n<p>T.M. will resist.
