Somebody had to fix it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou couldn\u2019t fix it while I remained competent?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn\u2019t what I said.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why did my competence stand in the way?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He laughed bitterly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause you don\u2019t understand how any of this works.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI understand ownership.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s paperwork.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s law.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom, you lived in the same house for thirty years and let Dad handle everything.
