That's the problem."

The sedan continued toward a state-maintenance compound temporarily cleared for the operation.

Police waited beyond sight.

Nicole had been instructed to pull in under the pretense that a friend left cash there.

Darren became suspicious two miles away.

"Where are we?"

"Shortcut."

"Stop."

Nicole kept driving.

"Stop the car."

Her breathing changed.

Investigators heard it.

Then Darren said, "Nicole."

Not loud.

That frightened Travis more.

"Pull over."

She did.

The sedan stopped on a rural shoulder.

Police units were still several minutes away.

Nicole said, "I'm trying to help you."

"You called them."

"No."

"You always get that voice when you're lying."

Silence.

Then the passenger door opened.

Darren got out.

Nicole shouted his name.

He ran across a field.

No weapon visible.

Police accelerated.

A helicopter was unavailable.

Ground units converged.

Darren crossed a fence.

Entered woods.

Again.

Running.

Travis listened to updates from the protected residence.

The story seemed determined to end with Darren disappearing through one more opening.

But this time investigators knew exactly where he entered.

The wooded tract was bordered by highway on one side, creek on another, open farmland on the third and the maintenance compound on the fourth.

Officers established containment.

Dogs were brought.

Thermal equipment.

Darren's advantages shrank.

No vehicle.

No phone investigators knew of.

No prepared room.

No mapped exit.

No brother organizing alternatives.

No network feeding locations.

Just a tired man in unfamiliar woods.

Night fell.

Search teams moved slowly.

Travis expected resolution every few minutes.

None came.

At the protected residence, Kaylee fell asleep on the sofa.

Bethany carried her to bed.

When she returned, Travis was sitting alone.

"Do you think they'll get him?"

"Yes."

"You sound sure."

"I need to."

Bethany sat across from him.

For a while neither spoke.

Then she said, "What happens after?"

Travis knew she did not mean Darren.

"I don't know."

"Our house?"

"Needs repairs."

"Our marriage?"

He looked at her.

"Needs more."

Bethany nodded.

"I won't fight you over Kaylee."

Travis's expression hardened.

"Don't say that like you're giving me something."

"I'm not."

"You're her mother."

"I know."

"We're going to need an actual custody arrangement."

"I know."

"Lawyers."

"I know."

"Probably counseling for her if she needs it."

"Yes."

"And us separately."

Bethany looked at him.

"Separately?"

"For now."

Pain crossed her face.

But she nodded.

"Okay."

Travis appreciated that she did not argue.

He was not punishing her.

He simply could not leap from crisis into reconciliation because the alternative felt lonely.

Kurt had exploited exactly that kind of emotional shortcut.

Travis would not repeat it.

At 10:16, search dogs located Darren's jacket near the creek.

At 10:43, officers found footprints along the muddy bank.

At 11:08, a thermal team detected movement beneath an abandoned bridge.

Police approached.

The figure ran.

Darren crossed shallow water.

Climbed the opposite bank.

An officer ordered him to stop.

He did not.

He reached a chain-link fence.

Tried climbing.

Slipped.

Fell.

Then finally remained on the ground.

Officers surrounded him.

No gun.

No knife.

Only a prepaid phone and four hundred thirty-two dollars in cash.

Darren Voss was taken into custody at 11:14 p.m.

Travis received the call at 11:19.

He closed his eyes.

"Anyone hurt?"

"No."

"Nicole?"

"Safe."

"Officers?"

"Safe."

"Darren?"

"Minor injuries."

Travis exhaled.

Bethany watched him.

"They got him?"

"Yeah."

She sat down.

Neither celebrated.

The silence felt different from the silence after Kurt's arrest.

Then, there had been another threat.

Now the principal people who had driven the nightmare were both in custody.

Kurt.

Darren.

Marla cooperating under investigation.

Ethan exposed.

Pike exposed.

Gary exposed.

Paula exposed.

Cynthia cooperating.

The network was no longer invisible.

That did not mean every case was finished.

It meant the hiding had ended.

The following morning, Darren began talking.

Not immediately.

Not fully.

He blamed Kurt for most of the fraud.

Kurt blamed Darren for the kidnapping plan.

Their stories contradicted each other.

Investigators had documents that contradicted both.

Darren admitted creating the false pickup authorization.

He admitted going to Melissa's house.

He admitted preparing the transfer point.

He admitted writing the ransom template.

He insisted he never intended to hurt Kaylee.

Travis found that distinction almost meaningless.

Then Darren said something useful.

The original plan involving Travis's house had not been fifty-five thousand dollars.

That number came later.

At first, Kurt had expected much less.

"What changed?" Travis asked Alvarez.

"Equity."

Kurt discovered Travis owned the house before marriage and had substantial equity.

That increased the projected value.

Then he learned Travis had good credit.

Another increase.

Then access to insurance and military records expanded possibilities.

The scheme grew because the information kept producing opportunities.

Bethany's relationship with Kurt had not begun as the primary objective.

It became the easiest route to the property.

That truth hurt her.

But it also stripped away one final illusion.

Kurt had not chosen her because she was uniquely irresistible.

He had chosen her because she was reachable.

He listened because listening created access.

He helped because help created debt.

He became intimate because intimacy opened drawers, passwords, routines and trust.

The affair was real in consequence.

But for Kurt, it had been instrumental.

Travis found Bethany outside after hearing the summary.

She was crying quietly.

He sat beside her.

She wiped her face.

"I feel stupid."

"You made bad decisions."

"That's a polite way to say stupid."

"No."

She looked at him.

"There's a difference."

Bethany waited.

Travis continued.

"If I tell myself you were stupid, then I don't have to understand what actually happened."

"And what happened?"

"You were lonely. Angry at me. He knew it. You still chose what you chose."

She nodded.

"Yes."

"Both things."

"Both."

That was the closest they had come to discussing the truth without defending themselves.

Inside, Kaylee shouted for them.

They went together.

She had lined up the ark animals.

The zebra stood alone.

Kaylee pointed accusingly at Travis.

"Still one."

He looked at Bethany.

She almost laughed.

After forged deeds, hidden files, warrants, trackers, stolen identities, escape routes and two arrests, his daughter remained focused on the only unresolved problem she considered unacceptable.

Travis picked up the zebra.

"Tomorrow."

Kaylee narrowed her eyes.

"Promise?"

"Promise."

This time he intended to keep it.

Click here to continue reading: PART 28: When Travis Finally Walked Back Into His House, the Last Unanswered Question Was Not Who Owned It but What Home Would Mean Now

Travis reacted before Alvarez finished explaining. "She helped him." "No." "She's driving the car." "Listen." Nicole had contacted investigators fifteen minutes before arriving at the truck stop.
