22 – Darren’s Transfer Point Was Empty, but a Child’s Bracelet and One Motel Camera Proved He Had Already Practiced the Route

The pink bracelet did not belong to Kaylee.

That answer arrived the following morning.

Melissa recognized neither the design nor the faded sticker attached to it.

Bethany did not either.

When investigators showed Travis a photograph, he knew immediately that Kaylee had never owned one like it.

Relief came hard enough to make him dizzy.

Then Alvarez explained why that was not entirely good news.

The bracelet belonged to a local indoor-play center.

Children received them at birthday parties.

Investigators contacted the business.

A partial printed number on the bracelet corresponded to a party held three months earlier.

Police obtained the guest list.

One surname appeared in Darren's ALTERNATE directory.

Mason.

Military family.

Young daughter.

Travis felt the relief drain away.

"Did something happen to her?"

"No reported abduction."

"Then why was her bracelet in Darren's lodge?"

"That's what we're finding out."

The Mason family was contacted.

Captain Eric Mason was stationed outside the state.

His wife, Laura, had taken their four-year-old daughter to the birthday party.

She remembered a man speaking to them afterward.

Friendly.

Heavy build.

Dark hair.

Darren.

He had helped carry a folding table to her car.

That was all.

At least as far as Laura remembered.

The Mason file had never progressed into an active fraud scheme.

Yet Darren had kept the child's discarded bracelet.

The object suddenly felt worse than if it had been Kaylee's.

It suggested practice.

Collection.

Proof of proximity.

Travis did not like what his mind did with that.

Hale kept him from saying it aloud.

"Let investigators establish why."

"They won't find an innocent reason."

"Probably not."

That was as close to agreement as she usually gave him.

Police searched the circled transfer point.

It was an old highway rest area closed after storm damage.

Concrete parking lanes remained behind a chain barrier.

A service road allowed access from the rear.

Darren had selected a place with two approaches and no regular staff.

No cameras.

No businesses nearby.

Investigators found tire impressions.

Recent.

Cigarette filters.

Food wrappers.

Nothing immediately identifying.

Then technicians recovered orange survey paint from the pavement.

Three small marks.

One near the road.

One behind the restroom building.

One beside a drainage culvert.

Alvarez showed Travis photographs.

"What's that?"

"We think route markers."

"For what?"

"Vehicle placement."

The theory was grimly practical.

One vehicle arrives.

Second vehicle hidden.

Passenger transferred.

First vehicle abandoned or driven elsewhere.

It was exactly the kind of logistics Darren handled for Kurt's fraud operation.

Only this version involved a child.

The evidence still did not prove Darren had ever abducted anyone.

It proved he had prepared.

Sometimes preparation frightened Travis more than action.

Action could fail.

Preparation meant time had been spent imagining success.

Investigators pulled traffic-camera archives from nearby roads.

Most were useless.

Too distant.

Wrong angles.

One camera at a motel six miles from the rest area captured Darren's white van on three separate dates.

Each time late at night.

One visit corresponded to the day after the Mason birthday party.

Another happened six weeks later.

The third was twelve days ago.

Travis leaned over the images.

"Why drive the route three times?"

Hale said, "You know what you're about to do."

"Practice."

"Likely."

Alvarez nodded.

"That's one interpretation."

Darren had apparently rehearsed the route.

Maybe alone.

Maybe testing travel times.

Maybe checking police presence.

The most recent trip happened after the forged declaration involving Kaylee had been filed.

That linked preparation directly to Travis's family.

Bethany looked sick.

"He drove it before Travis came home."

"Yes."

"So he expected to use it."

"Potentially."

She gave Hale a tired look.

"I understand why you say that now."

Hale nodded.

"It keeps fear from becoming fact."

Bethany looked toward Kaylee.

"Fear is already doing fine without help."

Travis understood.

By late morning, officers reviewing motel footage found something important.

On Darren's second route rehearsal, he was not alone.

A passenger sat in the van.

At first the face was obscured.

Another camera caught the person exiting at the motel office.

Leonard Pike.

Pike's newest interview became less cooperative.

He had not mentioned the rehearsals.

When confronted, he admitted riding with Darren once.

He claimed he thought they were scouting a place to dump stolen documents.

Nobody believed that explanation easily.

"What did Darren tell him?" Travis asked.

"That he wanted to know whether the road stayed quiet at night."

"Did Pike ask why?"

"He claims no."

Travis laughed bitterly.

"Nobody in this network ever asks why."

Bethany looked at him.

"I didn't either."

He regretted the remark.

Not because it was false.

Because she had already understood it.

Alvarez continued.

Pike said Darren asked something else during the drive.

How long daycare staff waited before reporting an unauthorized pickup.

That changed everything.

Pike insisted he told Darren any suspicious pickup would trigger immediate calls.

Darren reportedly answered:

Then make it look authorized.

The forged caregiver documents.

The printer templates.

The attempt at Melissa's door.

Pieces aligned.

Pike said he warned Kurt afterward.

This mattered.

Kurt had claimed he only knew Darren talked abstractly about children.

Pike said otherwise.

According to him, Kurt knew Darren had tested a route and discussed pickups.

"What did Kurt do?" Travis asked.

"Pike says Kurt confronted Darren."

"Then?"

"Argument."

"Anything else?"

"Pike says Kurt told him the Hale child was off-limits."

Travis felt no gratitude.

"Off-limits because he cared?"

Alvarez answered, "Pike says because the existing scheme was already profitable."

Exactly.

Not morality.

Risk management.

Bethany whispered, "Kaylee was safer because she was worth more alive and nearby."

No one contradicted her.

That was a difficult truth.

Darren's gambling debt kept growing.

The more pressure he felt, the less interested he became in Kurt's slow fraud model.

Investigators found messages where Darren demanded a larger share.

Kurt refused.

Darren accused Kurt of spending money on Bethany.

Bethany looked humiliated.

"How much?"

No one knew.

Meals.

Repairs.

Groceries.

Small gifts.

Everything Kurt had used to create obligation had come partly from criminal proceeds.

Even his generosity was financed by other victims.

Travis thought about all the times he had failed to be present.

He could not change those.

But Kurt had bought presence.

That was what made the manipulation effective.

Money converted into time.

Time converted into trust.

Trust converted into access.

Darren apparently saw all of that as wasted expense.

He wanted immediate payment.

Investigators obtained a message from him to an unknown contact:

KURT WANTS TO PLAY HUSBAND. I WANT CASH.

The unknown contact replied:

THEN TAKE SOMETHING PEOPLE PAY FOR.

No name.

No number tied to a known participant.

Another person might have encouraged Darren.

Or Darren could have been talking to someone uninvolved.

Authorities traced the account.

Created through a privacy service.

No easy identity.

Travis hated the idea of another invisible person.

"Could be Mack?"

"Possible."

"Marla?"

"Possible."

"Someone from gambling?"

"Possible."

Hale looked at him.

He said, "I know."

The investigation widened again.

Then Darren made his first mistake since Kurt's arrest.

He used one of his old casino accounts.

Not to gamble.

To transfer reward credits to another member.

The receiving account belonged to a woman named Nicole Voss.

Travis frowned.

"Sister?"

Bethany looked surprised.

"Kurt never said they had one."

Records showed Nicole was Darren's ex-wife.

She had kept the surname.

No current criminal history.

No obvious role in the fraud network.

Police contacted her.

Nicole answered.

When told Darren was wanted, she said:

"I've been expecting this call for ten years."

Travis looked at Alvarez.

That sentence promised history.

Nicole lived in Arkansas.

She had not seen Darren in almost a year.

But he had called her the previous night.

Asked for money.

Asked whether an old storage shed was still standing on her uncle's land.

She told him never to contact her again.

Investigators asked what shed.

An isolated property near the Missouri-Arkansas border.

Her uncle died years ago.

The land remained in probate.

No one lived there.

Darren knew the place.

Police moved.

Again, Travis waited.

Again, Kaylee played as though the world had not turned itself into maps and warrants.

At 3:26, officers reached the property.

The shed door was open.

Inside were empty water bottles.

A camping cot.

Darren's jacket.

No Darren.

But beside the cot was a cardboard box.

Inside were children's snacks.

Juice pouches.

A small blanket.

Noise-canceling headphones sized for a child.

And children's motion-sickness medication.

Travis stared at the inventory.

This time Hale did not say not to infer.

There were only so many reasons an adult preparing to hide would stock supplies specifically for a small child.

Then officers found a paper taped beneath the cot.

A handwritten route.

Melissa's town.

Transfer point.

Southern highway.

Arkansas property.

Darren had planned not only how to take Kaylee.

He had planned where to bring her afterward.

Click here to continue reading: PART 23: Nicole Voss Finally Explained Darren’s History, and Travis Learned the Brothers’ Rules Had Been Written After an Earlier Child Was Nearly Taken

The pink bracelet did not belong to Kaylee.
