Rebecca Hale read the first page twice before she said anything.<\/p>\n
They had moved from the laundromat to her office, where blinds cut the late-morning sun into narrow bands across the conference table. Bethany sat at one end with both hands wrapped around a paper cup she had not touched. Travis sat opposite her. The photocopied filing lay between them.<\/p>\n
At the top was a county case number.<\/p>\n
Below it was a sworn declaration concerning temporary care of Kaylee.<\/p>\n
Travis's name appeared beside a signature he had never made.<\/p>\n
Hale tapped the page with one fingernail.<\/p>\n
"This is not a custody order."<\/p>\n
Travis looked at her.<\/p>\n
"It's filed."<\/p>\n
"Filed and granted are not the same thing."<\/p>\n
Bethany's shoulders dropped slightly.<\/p>\n
Travis did not move.<\/p>\n
"What does it do?"<\/p>\n
"Potentially? It supports another request. By itself, much less than whoever prepared it probably wanted you to believe."<\/p>\n
She turned the page.<\/p>\n
The language was dense, but one sentence had been underlined in blue ink.<\/p>\n
Travis read it again.<\/p>\n
The undersigned father consents to temporary residential care of the minor child by Melissa Ann Mercer during his extended military absence and acknowledges that such placement is in the child's best interest.<\/p>\n
He looked at Bethany.<\/p>\n
"You signed this too."<\/p>\n
She nodded.<\/p>\n
"Why Melissa?"<\/p>\n
"Kurt said it would protect Kaylee."<\/p>\n
"From what?"<\/p>\n
"If you came back angry."<\/p>\n
Travis pushed away from the table.<\/p>\n
Hale raised one hand.<\/p>\n
"Stay seated."<\/p>\n
He did.<\/p>\n
Barely.<\/p>\n
Bethany looked down.<\/p>\n
"Kurt said if you tried to take her immediately, this would show we'd already agreed she should stay with Melissa."<\/p>\n
"We."<\/p>\n
"I know."<\/p>\n
"No, Bethany. There was no we."<\/p>\n
"I know."<\/p>\n
Travis stared at the copied signature.<\/p>\n
It was better than the one on the lease.<\/p>\n
That bothered him.<\/p>\n
The middle initial was there.<\/p>\n
The spacing looked right.<\/p>\n
Even the angle resembled the way he signed official Army forms.<\/p>\n
Hale noticed him studying it.<\/p>\n
"This one concerns you more."<\/p>\n
"Yes."<\/p>\n
"Why?"<\/p>\n
"He practiced."<\/p>\n
Bethany's head came up.<\/p>\n
"Kurt didn't sign it."<\/p>\n
"You did."<\/p>\n
"Yes."<\/p>\n
"Who showed you how?"<\/p>\n
She said nothing.<\/p>\n
Travis watched her face.<\/p>\n
"Bethany."<\/p>\n
"He had copies."<\/p>\n
"Copies of what?"<\/p>\n
"Your old paperwork."<\/p>\n
The room seemed to contract.<\/p>\n
"What paperwork?"<\/p>\n
"Mortgage stuff. Insurance. Some Army forms."<\/p>\n
"Where did he get them?"<\/p>\n
Bethany swallowed.<\/p>\n
"From the desk."<\/p>\n
Their desk.<\/p>\n
The oak rolltop in the spare room where Travis kept tax records, leave papers, insurance policies and old military documents.<\/p>\n
He had never locked it.<\/p>\n
There had never been a reason.<\/p>\n
"How long was he going through my papers?"<\/p>\n
"I don't know."<\/p>\n
"Days?"<\/p>\n
"I don't know."<\/p>\n
"Weeks?"<\/p>\n
Bethany's silence answered.<\/p>\n
Hale leaned forward.<\/p>\n
"When did Kurt first ask about Sergeant\u2014Travis's documents?"<\/p>\n
Bethany rubbed her thumb against the paper cup.<\/p>\n
"Before I withdrew Kaylee."<\/p>\n
Travis looked at Hale.<\/p>\n
That mattered.<\/p>\n
"What exactly did he ask?"<\/p>\n
"He wanted to know whose name was on the house."<\/p>\n
"Why?"<\/p>\n
"He said if we were really done, I needed to understand what I could keep."<\/p>\n
Travis almost interrupted.<\/p>\n
Hale stopped him with a glance.<\/p>\n
Bethany continued.<\/p>\n
"He looked through the filing cabinet. He said you had structured everything so I'd be left with nothing."<\/p>\n
"That's not true," Travis said.<\/p>\n
"I know that now."<\/p>\n
"You knew it then."<\/p>\n
She looked at him.<\/p>\n
"No. I didn't."<\/p>\n
The answer hurt because Travis could not tell whether it was dishonest.<\/p>\n
He had handled most financial paperwork in the marriage. Bethany paid groceries, daycare and her car expenses. Travis handled the mortgage, insurance and savings.<\/p>\n
He had called it practical.<\/p>\n
From Bethany's side, perhaps it had looked like control.<\/p>\n
Kurt had apparently found that uncertainty useful.<\/p>\n
Hale turned to Bethany.<\/p>\n
"Did he ever say he was a lawyer?"<\/p>\n
"No."<\/p>\n
"Paralegal?"<\/p>\n
"No."<\/p>\n
"Property manager?"<\/p>\n
"He said he'd helped friends with leases."<\/p>\n
"Did he tell you he had legal training?"<\/p>\n
"No."<\/p>\n
"Then why did you trust his interpretation?"<\/p>\n
Bethany gave a miserable laugh.<\/p>\n
"Because he sounded certain."<\/p>\n
Hale nodded as if she heard that answer often.<\/p>\n
"People confuse certainty with expertise every day."<\/p>\n
Travis looked again at the filing.<\/p>\n
"When was this submitted?"<\/p>\n
Hale found the stamp.<\/p>\n
"Nine days ago."<\/p>\n
Nine days.<\/p>\n
Travis had been at Fort Sill.<\/p>\n
Nine days ago he had called home after evening formation.<\/p>\n
Bethany had not answered.<\/p>\n
She texted two hours later saying Kaylee was asleep and she had a headache.<\/p>\n
While he was trying not to disturb her, somebody had filed a forged declaration involving his daughter.<\/p>\n
"Who notarized it?"<\/p>\n
Hale went still.<\/p>\n
She rotated the page.<\/p>\n
At the bottom was a seal.<\/p>\n
"That's interesting."<\/p>\n
Travis leaned closer.<\/p>\n
The notary's name was printed beneath the stamp.<\/p>\n
Marla J. Keene.<\/p>\n
Hale reached for her computer.<\/p>\n
Bethany said, "What?"<\/p>\n
"If that notarization is genuine, the notary supposedly witnessed the signature."<\/p>\n
"But Travis wasn't there."<\/p>\n
"Exactly."<\/p>\n
Hale searched the state registry.<\/p>\n
The office was quiet except for the keyboard.<\/p>\n
Then she stopped.<\/p>\n
"What?"<\/p>\n
Hale turned the monitor slightly.<\/p>\n
"Marla Keene's commission expired fourteen months ago."<\/p>\n
Bethany stared.<\/p>\n
Travis leaned back.<\/p>\n
"Could the stamp still be old?"<\/p>\n
"Could be misuse. Could be a fabricated seal. Could be someone using an expired commission. We don't guess."<\/p>\n
Hale printed the registry entry.<\/p>\n
Then she pulled the other photocopy closer.<\/p>\n
"The lease."<\/p>\n
Travis understood.<\/p>\n
They compared the notarization sections.<\/p>\n
The lease did not have one.<\/p>\n
The declaration did.<\/p>\n
Different tactics for different documents.<\/p>\n
"Why make it look official?" Bethany asked.<\/p>\n
Hale looked at her.<\/p>\n
"Because people obey documents they believe have authority."<\/p>\n
That sentence stayed in the room.<\/p>\n
Travis thought of Kurt standing in his house saying prove it.<\/p>\n
Perhaps Kurt never expected the forgery to survive scrutiny.<\/p>\n
Perhaps he only needed it to survive long enough.<\/p>\n
"For what?" Travis asked.<\/p>\n
Hale glanced at him.<\/p>\n
"That's the question."<\/p>\n
His phone rang.<\/p>\n
Melissa.<\/p>\n
Travis answered on speaker after Hale nodded.<\/p>\n
"Hello?"<\/p>\n
Melissa sounded breathless.<\/p>\n
"Travis, you need to come get Kaylee."<\/p>\n
Every person at the table straightened.<\/p>\n
"What's wrong?"<\/p>\n
"Nothing's wrong with her."<\/p>\n
"Then what happened?"<\/p>\n
"Bethany's friend is here."<\/p>\n
Bethany's face drained.<\/p>\n
"Kurt?"<\/p>\n
"No. Another guy."<\/p>\n
Travis was already standing.<\/p>\n
"Name."<\/p>\n
"I don't know. He says he's supposed to pick her up."<\/p>\n
"Do not let him."<\/p>\n
"I'm not."<\/p>\n
"Lock the door."<\/p>\n
"It is."<\/p>\n
A muffled pounding came through the phone.<\/p>\n
Melissa gasped.<\/p>\n
Travis felt every muscle in his body tighten.<\/p>\n
"Is that him?"<\/p>\n
"Yes."<\/p>\n
"Call 911."<\/p>\n
"I already did."<\/p>\n
Hale pointed toward the address Bethany had provided.<\/p>\n
"How far?"<\/p>\n
Travis knew roughly.<\/p>\n
"Hour and twenty."<\/p>\n
Bethany stood.<\/p>\n
"I'm coming."<\/p>\n
Hale said, "No one drives emotionally. We coordinate with local law enforcement."<\/p>\n
Melissa spoke again.<\/p>\n
"He's holding something up to the window."<\/p>\n
"What?"<\/p>\n
"Paper."<\/p>\n
Travis's stomach sank.<\/p>\n
"What does it say?"<\/p>\n
"I can't read it."<\/p>\n
Another knock.<\/p>\n
Then a male voice, faint but forceful.<\/p>\n
"Ma'am, I have authorization."<\/p>\n
Travis closed his eyes.<\/p>\n
Of course he did.<\/p>\n
"Kurt gave him documents," Bethany whispered.<\/p>\n
Melissa heard her.<\/p>\n
"Bethany?"<\/p>\n
"I'm here."<\/p>\n
"What have you done?"<\/p>\n
Bethany flinched.<\/p>\n
Travis cut in.<\/p>\n
"Melissa, stay away from the door."<\/p>\n
The pounding stopped.<\/p>\n
That was somehow worse.<\/p>\n
Melissa moved toward a window.<\/p>\n
"His car's leaving."<\/p>\n
Travis looked at Hale.<\/p>\n
"Description."<\/p>\n
Melissa gave it.<\/p>\n
Hale wrote everything down.<\/p>\n
"Police are coming," Melissa said.<\/p>\n
Travis breathed through his nose.<\/p>\n
"Kaylee?"<\/p>\n
"She's coloring."<\/p>\n
The ordinary answer nearly broke him.<\/p>\n
"What color?"<\/p>\n
Melissa seemed confused.<\/p>\n
"What?"<\/p>\n
"What's she coloring?"<\/p>\n
A pause.<\/p>\n
"A horse."<\/p>\n
Travis sat again.<\/p>\n
"Okay."<\/p>\n
He did not know why that mattered.<\/p>\n
It simply did.<\/p>\n
Hale was already calling the sheriff's office in Melissa's county.<\/p>\n
Bethany stared at the forged declaration.<\/p>\n
"He wasn't supposed to use it like this."<\/p>\n
Travis looked at her.<\/p>\n
"How was he supposed to use it?"<\/p>\n
She had no answer.<\/p>\n
"Bethany."<\/p>\n
"I thought it was to stop you."<\/p>\n
"From seeing my daughter?"<\/p>\n
"From taking her without warning."<\/p>\n
"By giving Kurt a document he could hand to strangers?"<\/p>\n
"I didn't know."<\/p>\n
Travis rose again.<\/p>\n
Hale ended her call.<\/p>\n
"A deputy is en route. Melissa has been told not to release Kaylee to anyone."<\/p>\n
"Good."<\/p>\n
"Now listen to me. This just moved beyond a marital dispute."<\/p>\n
Travis looked at the papers.<\/p>\n
"What is it now?"<\/p>\n
"Potentially attempted interference with custody. Potential fraud. Possibly criminal forgery. Depending on who that man was and what he intended, maybe more."<\/p>\n
Bethany covered her mouth.<\/p>\n
Travis looked toward her.<\/p>\n
"Who else knows where Melissa lives?"<\/p>\n
She answered immediately.<\/p>\n
"Kurt."<\/p>\n
"Anyone else?"<\/p>\n
"My mother."<\/p>\n
"Would she tell him?"<\/p>\n
"No."<\/p>\n
"Anyone?"<\/p>\n
Bethany shook her head.<\/p>\n
Then stopped.<\/p>\n
Travis saw it.<\/p>\n
"What?"<\/p>\n
She stared at the table.<\/p>\n
"When Kurt was helping me move Kaylee's things, he took pictures."<\/p>\n
"Of what?"<\/p>\n
"Her medical card. Daycare forms. Emergency contacts."<\/p>\n
Hale's expression hardened.<\/p>\n
"Why?"<\/p>\n
"He said we needed copies."<\/p>\n
"Copies for whom?"<\/p>\n
"I don't know."<\/p>\n
Travis heard the phrase too many times.<\/p>\n
He walked to the window.<\/p>\n
Outside, traffic moved normally.<\/p>\n
People carried coffee.<\/p>\n
A delivery driver wheeled boxes into the business next door.<\/p>\n
The world continued behaving as though nobody had constructed a paper version of Travis that agreed to things he had never seen.<\/p>\n
His phone buzzed.<\/p>\n
A text from Melissa.<\/p>\n
POLICE HERE. WE'RE OKAY.<\/p>\n
Then another message arrived.<\/p>\n
A photograph.<\/p>\n
Travis opened it.<\/p>\n
Melissa had taken it through the window before the stranger left.<\/p>\n
The car was visible.<\/p>\n
So was the man beside it.<\/p>\n
Bethany gasped.<\/p>\n
"You know him?"<\/p>\n

"His name's Darren."<\/p>\n
