He leaned against a stone column with his hands in his coat pockets, looking as though he had not slept. Mark came ten minutes later and stayed on the opposite side of the entrance. My daughter stood beside Elaine. Gabriel kept enough distance from Daniel that I suspected this had been discussed before we left Long Island.

Nobody spoke until the doors opened.

I carried the brass key in my purse.

The bank manager who met us was a careful man named Mr. Brennan. When Elaine explained why we were there, he asked for identification, disappeared for several minutes, returned with another employee, and explained that box 417 had an unusual access history.

"Unusual how?" I asked.

"It has not been opened in many years."

"How many?"

He checked his screen.

"Twenty-seven."

Gabriel stared at him.

"My mother died fifteen years ago."

Mr. Brennan looked uncomfortable.

"I'm sorry."

"Who rented the box?"

"Elena Mendoza and Robert Mendoza."

My children turned toward me.

I felt no surprise.

I was beginning to resent surprise itself. It had become exhausting.

"Both names?"

"Yes."

"Either could access it?"

"According to the original agreement."

Elaine asked, "And after their deaths?"

"The box entered inactive status. Fees were paid automatically from a linked account until that account closed. Afterward, the institution absorbed the maintenance charges pending resolution."

"Why wasn't the contents transferred to unclaimed property?"

Mr. Brennan glanced at his notes.

"There was a legal hold."

"Requested by whom?"

He hesitated.

"A law firm."

"Name?"

He read it.

Elaine's expression changed.

"What?" I asked.

"That was Robert's estate firm."

Daniel swore softly.

Mr. Brennan looked between us.

"I'll need documentation establishing authority before anyone can open it."

Daniel said, "We have the key."

"The key isn't authority."

For once, I liked a rule.

Elaine handed him the papers she had prepared.

We waited almost an hour.

Nobody sat together.

I watched my children occupy separate corners of the waiting area and wondered when they had become strangers to one another. Perhaps they always had been in ways I had not noticed. Childhood photographs had taught me to see them as a unit. Three heads around birthday cakes. Three winter coats by the door. Three names called upstairs when dinner was ready.

Adults did not remain photographs.

At ten twelve, Mr. Brennan returned.

"Mrs. Mendoza?"

I stood.

"Because you are the surviving legal owner of record connected to Robert Mendoza's estate, and because counsel has provided the necessary indemnification, we can permit supervised access."

"Who comes with me?"

"One attorney."

Elaine stood.

Gabriel did too.

Mr. Brennan shook his head.

"I'm sorry."

Gabriel sat again.

I looked at him.

"If there's something about your mother in there, I'll bring it out."

His jaw tightened.

"Thank you."

Daniel said, "Mom, be careful."

I almost laughed.

"Of paper?"

"Of believing everything Dad wrote."

That stayed with me as Elaine and I followed Mr. Brennan downstairs.

The vault smelled faintly of metal and old carpet.

Box 417 was longer than I expected.

Mr. Brennan used the bank key. I used Robert's.

The lock turned.

He withdrew the metal container and carried it into a private room.

"I'll wait outside."

When the door closed, Elaine looked at me.

"You don't have to do this quickly."

"I've waited twenty-seven years without knowing I was waiting."

I lifted the lid.

There was no money.

No jewelry.

No dramatic stack of bearer bonds.

There were letters.

Dozens.

Some tied with string, others inside envelopes. Beneath them lay a ledger, a cassette tape, property maps, two photographs and a sealed legal packet.

The first photograph showed Robert and Elena standing beside a car.

Gabriel had her eyes.

I knew that immediately.

The second showed Elena alone on the Long Island property.

Behind her stood the house I now owned.

I turned it over.

Robert had written a date.

Thirty-one years ago.

"She was there."

Elaine leaned closer.

"Apparently."

"Robert brought her to the house."

"Or she came independently."

I gave Elaine a look.

"You're very determined not to assume anything."

"It's how I stay employed."

Despite myself, I smiled.

Then I opened the ledger.

Payments.

Dates.

Amounts.

Most were modest.

Some had initials beside them.

E.M.

G.M.

R.M.

Later entries contained descriptions.

School.

Medical.

Rent.

Gabriel.

I closed my eyes.

Robert had supported his son.

Quietly.

Consistently.

Not enough to be a father, as Gabriel had said, but enough that Robert had never truly left.

Elaine examined the property maps.

"Teresa."

I looked.

A blue line crossed the western acreage.

Water infrastructure.

A second line marked proposed road access.

A handwritten notation appeared beside the neighboring parcel.

DO NOT SELL SEPARATELY.

Below it:

ACCESS VALUE DEPENDS ON T.M. PARCEL.

"T.M.," I said.

"You."

My initials.

The neighboring parcel Daniel's fund had optioned was useless—or at least far less valuable—without mine.

I felt anger settle into something colder.

"Daniel knew."

"Possibly."

"Elaine."

"Very probably."

"Thank you."

She continued through the papers.

I opened the sealed legal packet.

Inside was a document titled PRIVATE SETTLEMENT AND BENEFICIAL INTEREST AGREEMENT.

Elena's name appeared first.

Robert's second.

The date was thirty years old.

I read slowly.

Robert had promised Elena something beyond child support.

If the Long Island property was ever developed using the western access corridor or water easement, a percentage of proceeds would belong to a trust benefiting Gabriel.

I stared at the number.

Twenty percent.

Elaine read over my shoulder.

"That changes things."

"Gabriel does have an interest."

"A contingent beneficial interest. Very different from owning the property."

"But if it's developed—"

"He may be entitled to twenty percent of certain proceeds."

I thought of Gabriel's disclaimer.

"He signed away his inheritance."

"Not necessarily this. If he didn't know this agreement existed, his disclaimer may not encompass it."

My chest tightened.

"And if Daniel knew?"

Elaine's expression hardened.

"Then his urgency makes considerably more sense."

The proposed sale would transfer the property before development.

A low sale price.

Then rezoning.

Then development.

If structured carefully, perhaps the people involved could argue that the increased value arose only after the sale.

Gabriel's twenty percent might become harder to claim.

My twenty percent of understanding had just become one hundred percent rage.

I reached for the next document.

It was a letter from Elena to Robert.

She wrote that she wanted nothing from his marriage.

Nothing from me.

She did not want to destroy his family.

But she wanted Gabriel protected from men who might someday turn Robert's shame into profit.

One sentence stopped me.

Daniel has begun asking questions, and he is much more like you than you understand.

I stared at the date.

Fourteen years ago.

Daniel would have been an adult.

Robert was still alive.

"Elaine."

She read it.

Her face sharpened.

"Daniel knew Elena."

I felt the room tilt.

"He told us he found letters."

"He may have done more than find them."

I opened another envelope.

This one was addressed to Daniel.

Unsent.

Robert had written it.

Son, you went to Elena after I told you not to involve yourself.

I stopped.

My hands went cold.

Elaine took the letter when I offered it.

Robert accused Daniel of visiting Elena and pressuring her to surrender Gabriel's future claim.

Daniel had apparently argued that Gabriel was not part of "our family."

Robert's response had been furious.

Blood is not something you can vote on.

I thought of Gabriel upstairs.

Waiting.

Not knowing his mother had fought this battle for him.

The letter continued.

Robert warned Daniel never to approach Elena again.

Then came the line that made me sit down.

If you ever use Teresa's ignorance of this matter against her, I will remove you entirely from every arrangement I have made.

"Every arrangement," I whispered.

Elaine nodded.

"That may explain the later restructuring."

"Robert changed things because of Daniel."

"It appears possible."

"Then Daniel knew exactly why the property was transferred to me."

"Yes."

No careful qualification this time.

We found another letter.

Then another.

A chronology emerged.

Daniel discovered Gabriel's existence before Robert died.

He learned about the property.

He learned enough about the water easement to understand future value.

He approached Elena.

Robert discovered it.

Robert transferred more control away from the children.

Elena disappeared for six days shortly afterward.

The hotel receipt came from that same week.

But the final document changed that part too.

It was a handwritten statement from Elena.

I read the first lines.

Robert did not bring me here. I came because Daniel frightened me.

My breath stopped.

"Elaine."

She came beside me.

Elena wrote that Daniel had appeared at her home with documents.

He claimed Robert was dying.

He claimed the family would fight Gabriel.

He offered money if she signed away any future interest connected to the Long Island property.

She refused.

Daniel became angry.

Not violent.

Elena was explicit about that.

But threatening enough that she left home for several days and stayed in New York while deciding whether to contact Robert.

That was the disappearance.

Not Robert.

Daniel.

I closed my eyes.

"He's been lying since last night."

"Yes."

"He said he didn't know where she went."

"Yes."

"He knew why she left."

"Apparently."

I stood.

"We're done."

Elaine touched the cassette.

"Not quite."

I had forgotten it.

A label had been written across the plastic case.

FOR TERESA, IF PAPER ISN'T ENOUGH.

Robert.

I stared at it.

"Can we play it?"

"Not here unless they have equipment."

They did not.

I put the cassette carefully into my purse.

Then I noticed one final envelope beneath it.

My name.

Different handwriting.

Elena's.

I opened it.

Teresa,

If you are reading this, then Robert waited too long again.

I almost smiled at the sentence.

Elena knew him.

Perhaps in some ways as well as I had.

She wrote that she was sorry.

Not for Gabriel.

Never for Gabriel.

She was sorry that Robert's fear had forced two women who should have been allowed the truth to live inside different versions of the same man.

She said Robert loved me.

She had no doubt of that.

But love, she wrote, did not excuse cowardice.

I sat very still.

A dead woman I had spent less than twenty-four hours imagining as my husband's secret rival had just said the thing I needed someone to say.

Robert had loved me.

Robert had lied to me.

Both could be true.

Elena's final paragraph concerned Daniel.

Do not let your son convince you that everything he did was for his father. He wants the land. Robert knows it. I know it. One day you will know it too.

The letter was fourteen years old.

I folded it carefully.

When Elaine and I returned upstairs, everyone stood.

Gabriel searched my face.

"Was there anything from her?"

I walked to him.

I handed him Elena's letter to Robert about his future interest.

Then the photograph.

His fingers shook.

"My mother was at the house."

"Yes."

He stared at the image.

Daniel interrupted.

"What else?"

I turned.

His face told me he already knew enough to be afraid.

I removed Robert's unsent letter to him.

"You visited Elena."

Daniel went white.

Mark looked at him.

"What?"

My daughter whispered, "You said you never met her."

Daniel looked toward the exit.

Gabriel moved instinctively into his path.

"Don't," I said.

Gabriel stepped aside.

Daniel could leave if he wanted.

I wanted that choice to be his.

He stayed.

"She wrote about you," I said.

His mouth tightened.

"Mom—"

"She said you frightened her."

"I never touched her."

"I didn't say you did."

"I was trying to protect Dad."

"No."

I took Elena's letter from my purse.

"She knew what you wanted fourteen years ago."

Daniel stared at it.

"She didn't know me."

"She knew enough."

His face hardened.

"You're trusting a dead stranger over your own son?"

I looked at him for a long moment.

"No."

Then I placed Robert's letter beside Elena's.

"I'm trusting two dead people who independently wrote down the same thing."

Daniel said nothing.

I reached into my purse again.

The cassette clicked softly against my wedding-ring finger.

Robert had left one more voice waiting for me.

And judging by the way Daniel stared at the tape, he already knew what I was about to hear.

Click here to continue reading: PART 10: Robert’s Voice Finally Explained Why He Chose Me Over His Children, but One Confession Changed What I Believed About Gabriel’s Mother

At eight forty the next morning, all six of us stood outside a bank in Manhattan pretending not to watch one another.
