For several seconds I did not remember where I was.

Then memory returned all at once.

The bar. Gabriel's hand. The elevator. His room.

I closed my eyes.

"Oh, Teresa."

I whispered my own name as if scolding somebody else.

Gabriel was asleep on his side, facing away from me. In daylight he looked less mysterious. There were lines around his eyes and a pale scar near one shoulder. One hand rested outside the blanket.

Nothing terrible had happened.

Nothing magical had happened either.

Two lonely adults had made a choice.

That should have comforted me.

Instead, embarrassment climbed from my stomach into my face.

I was sixty-five years old. My children had forgotten my birthday, so I had taken a train to New York, drunk wine with a stranger, and gone upstairs with him.

If my daughter knew, she would probably use the careful voice she reserved for decisions she considered inappropriate.

That thought irritated me enough to get out of bed.

My blue dress lay near the chair. One shoe was beneath the desk. I found the other beside the bed.

I gathered my clothes quietly and went into the bathroom.

The woman in the mirror looked disordered but not ruined.

That surprised me.

My lipstick had mostly vanished. My hair was wild around my face. There was a faint crease from the pillow across one cheek.

I touched it and almost smiled.

For years, aging had seemed like a gradual removal. Less attention. Less expectation. Less room. Yet last night, for a few hours, I had inhabited my own body without apologizing for it.

I showered quickly.

When I emerged wrapped in the hotel robe, Gabriel was still asleep.

My phone had twenty-three notifications.

I froze.

Three missed calls from my eldest.

Two from my daughter.

Five from my youngest.

Messages filled the screen.

Mom, where are you?

Please call.

We need to talk.

This is important.

Call me as soon as you see this.

Not one message said happy birthday.

I sat on the edge of the chair.

A laugh escaped me, but there was nothing amusing in it.

They had discovered I was unavailable.

Apparently that mattered more than my birthday.

I started to type a reply.

Then stopped.

What exactly would I say?

Sorry I missed your calls. I was busy remembering I existed?

I locked the phone.

My purse was on the desk beside Gabriel's jacket. As I reached for it, my elbow caught the jacket sleeve.

Something fell.

A wallet struck the carpet and opened.

"Wonderful," I muttered.

I bent to retrieve it.

That should have been the end of it.

Then I saw the photograph.

It was tucked behind a transparent sleeve inside the wallet, faded around the edges from years of handling.

My fingers stopped.

A younger man stood in the photograph beside a woman holding a baby.

I knew the man.

I knew the angle of his shoulders.

I knew the uneven smile.

I knew the small pale mark above his eyebrow from a childhood bicycle accident.

Robert.

My husband.

My dead husband.

I forgot how to breathe.

The photograph shook in my hands.

Robert looked perhaps twenty-five. Younger than when I met him. His hair was thick and dark. One arm rested around the woman.

She was beautiful.

Not posed-beautiful. Happy-beautiful.

She held a baby against her chest.

Robert's other hand rested protectively against the child's back.

I stared until the room seemed to tilt.

Why did Gabriel have a photograph of my husband?

I pulled the picture carefully from the sleeve.

Writing covered the back.

The ink had faded, but I could read it.

Robert, Elena, Gabriel.

My stomach turned.

Gabriel.

I looked toward the bed.

He was awake.

He had not moved.

His eyes were fixed on the photograph in my hand.

Neither of us spoke.

I held it up.

"What is this?"

Gabriel sat slowly.

"Teresa—"

"What is this?"

He rubbed a hand over his face.

"I was going to tell you."

A cold sensation moved through me.

"When?"

"Today."

"Before or after I left?"

He looked down.

That was the wrong thing to do.

I crossed the room and dropped the photograph on the desk.

"You knew who I was."

He said nothing.

"You knew."

"Yes."

The answer hit harder than denial would have.

I stepped backward.

Everything from the previous night changed shape.

The look on his face when I said my name.

His questions about family.

His reaction when I mentioned the candle.

Recognition.

He had used that word.

"You followed me."

"No."

"Don't lie to me."

"I'm not."

"Then explain why you have a photograph of my husband in your wallet."

Gabriel stood, but he kept several feet between us.

"I came to New York looking for you."

My mouth went dry.

"That's called following someone."

"I hadn't found you yet."

"You were sitting beside me."

"By coincidence."

I laughed once.

"Do you understand how ridiculous that sounds?"

"Yes."

"Who are you?"

Gabriel looked toward the photograph.

When he answered, his voice was low.

"Someone Robert should have told you about."

The room suddenly felt too small.

I reached for my dress.

"I am leaving."

"Teresa, please."

"Do not touch me."

He stopped instantly.

I pulled the dress over my head with clumsy hands.

"You knew my husband."

"Yes."

"How?"

Gabriel hesitated.

That hesitation frightened me more than anything he had said.

I grabbed my purse.

He moved toward the desk instead of toward me and opened a black leather folder I had not noticed the night before.

Documents were inside.

"Robert gave me instructions."

I stopped.

"My husband has been dead twelve years."

"I know."

"Then he didn't give you instructions yesterday."

"No."

"When?"

"Before he died."

I stared at him.

The hotel room seemed to lose all ordinary dimensions.

Robert had known Gabriel.

Robert had expected Gabriel to contact me.

And Gabriel had carried a photograph of Robert beside his heart while taking Robert's widow upstairs.

I felt sick.

"Did he tell you to sleep with me too?"

Gabriel flinched.

"No."

"Then at least one thing last night wasn't planned."

"None of last night was planned."

"Why should I believe you?"

"You shouldn't."

The answer stopped me.

He took several pages from the folder and placed them on the table.

"I can prove why I came."

"I don't care."

"You will."

"That's an arrogant thing to say."

"It's not arrogance."

His face had gone pale.

"It's about your children."

My hand tightened around my purse strap.

"What about them?"

Gabriel looked toward my phone.

"That's why they're calling."

I followed his gaze.

Another call appeared.

My youngest.

I declined it.

"What have you done?"

"Nothing."

"What have they done?"

Gabriel exhaled slowly.

"Sit down."

"No."

"Teresa—"

"If you tell me to sit down again, I'm walking out."

He nodded.

"All right."

He slid one document across the table.

I did not approach.

"What is it?"

"A filing."

"Filed by whom?"

"Your children."

The words seemed absurd.

"For what?"

Gabriel met my eyes.

"To have you declared incapable of managing your own affairs."

I stared at him.

Then I laughed.

I actually laughed.

"My children can barely agree on Thanksgiving."

"I'm sorry."

"No. This is some kind of scam."

"I wish it were."

"Why would they do that?"

Gabriel opened the folder wider.

"Because there's property they need control of."

"I don't have property worth fighting over."

"You do."

"My house in Allentown still has debt on it."

"I'm not talking about that house."

I thought of Robert's years of overtime, our careful budgets, the bills after his death.

"What property?"

Gabriel's gaze did not leave mine.

"An estate on Long Island."

I shook my head.

"I have never owned an estate on Long Island."

"Yes, you have."

"You're insane."

"It has been in your name for years."

"Robert would have told me."

Gabriel said nothing.

That silence cut deeper than an argument.

I looked at the photograph again.

Robert smiling beside another woman.

Robert's hand on another woman's baby.

A property I had never seen.

Children calling me frantically the morning after ignoring my birthday.

Everything familiar had become unreliable in less than ten minutes.

I moved toward the table.

"Show me."

Gabriel handed me the first page.

My legal name appeared near the top.

Teresa Aguilar Mendoza.

I recognized Robert's signature.

I read the property description twice.

Then the transfer date.

Eight years before Robert died.

My knees weakened.

I gripped the chair.

Gabriel did not move to help.

For that, at least, I was grateful.

"Why didn't I know?"

"Robert concealed it."

"From me?"

"From almost everyone."

"My children knew?"

"Eventually."

I looked at the missed calls on my phone.

"How?"

"That's one of the things we're still establishing."

"We?"

"My attorney and I."

"Your attorney?"

"Elaine Mercer."

I stared at him.

"You came prepared with a lawyer."

"Yes."

"But meeting me in the bar was accidental."

"Yes."

"And you expect me to believe both things."

"I expect you to verify everything."

That answer sounded annoyingly reasonable.

I picked up another page.

Numbers appeared near the bottom.

My eyes stopped.

"$1.2 million?"

"That's only part of what we're dealing with."

I lowered the document.

"I don't understand."

"I know."

"Stop saying that."

"I'm sorry."

My phone rang again.

This time my eldest.

I answered.

"Mom."

His relief was immediate.

"Where have you been? We've been trying to reach you."

I looked at Gabriel.

"You could have tried yesterday."

Silence.

"Yesterday?"

"My birthday."

Another silence.

Then my son said, "Oh, God. Mom, I'm sorry. Things have been crazy."

Something inside me hardened.

"What do you need?"

"What?"

"You didn't remember my birthday, but now you've called three times before nine in the morning. What do you need?"

His voice changed.

"Nothing. We're worried."

"About?"

"You've been alone a lot."

I stared at the legal document in my hand.

"Have I?"

"Mom, don't make this difficult."

My blood went cold.

He seemed to hear his mistake.

"I mean, we're just concerned. There are some things happening with Dad's estate."

"Which things?"

Another pause.

"Who have you been talking to?"

I looked at Gabriel.

He watched me without expression.

"Why does that matter?"

"Because there are people who could take advantage of you."

My fingers tightened around the phone.

"People?"

"Yes."

"Such as?"

"Mom, just tell me where you are."

I hung up.

The silence afterward was enormous.

Gabriel said, "Now you understand why I needed to find you."

"No."

I put the phone down.

"Now I understand that everybody around me knows something I don't."

I pointed at him.

"That includes you."

"Yes."

"Start talking."

Gabriel reached into the folder.

Instead of another legal document, he removed a sealed envelope.

My name was written across the front.

I knew the handwriting.

Robert's.

My knees nearly gave way.

I reached for the envelope, but Gabriel kept one hand on it.

"There's something you need to know before you open this."

"Take your hand off my husband's letter."

He did.

I picked it up.

The paper felt old and strangely heavy.

Under my name, Robert had written an instruction.

For my wife. To be delivered only when my children leave her completely alone.

I read it again.

Then again.

My children.

Not our children.

My children.

Robert had written those words before dying.

Before twelve years of silence and diminishing phone calls.

Before last night's candle.

I looked at Gabriel.

"How could he have known?"

Gabriel's expression tightened.

"He didn't know when it would happen."

"Then why write this?"

"Because he was afraid."

"Of what?"

Gabriel looked at the photograph between us.

Then he said, "Of exactly what your children started doing yesterday."

Click here to continue reading: PART 3: My Dead Husband Had Predicted My Children’s Betrayal Years Earlier, but the Reason He Trusted Gabriel Was Far More Personal

Morning entered the hotel room in a narrow strip of gray light.
