county social worker called.<\/p>\n<p>Her name was Denise Harper.<\/p>\n<p>She asked me to repeat everything.<\/p>\n<p>Again.<\/p>\n<p>By the third telling, I hated the sound of my own Ramirez.<\/p>\n<p>The presence of an investigator transformed my kitchen.<\/p>\n<p>Until then, I could still pretend I was involved in an unusual school matter.<\/p>\n<p>A law-enforcement badge ended that fantasy.<\/p>\n<p>I placed the backpack on the table.<\/p>\n<p>Ramirez photographed it before touching it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you move this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom the den to the anything?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She put on gloves.<\/p>\n<p>I watched.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou think there\u2019s something inside.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She opened the main compartment.<\/p>\n<p>On top was a pair of pajamas.<\/p>\n<p>Beneath them were two shirts, underwear, a toothbrush and a plastic comb.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing unusual.<\/p>\n<p>Then Ramirez lifted the clothing.<\/p>\n<p>At the bottom lay a small metal cashbox.<\/p>\n<p>The kind sold for keeping coins or documents.<\/p>\n<p>It was scratched and old.<\/p>\n<p>A strip of masking tape crossed the lid.<\/p>\n<p>Written on it in a child\u2019s handwriting were three words.<\/p>\n<p>FOR GRANDMA ONLY.<\/p>\n<p>I stopped breathing for a moment.<\/p>\n<p>Denise and Ramirez exchanged a look.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou didn\u2019t see this?\u201d Ramirez asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you know why Sadie had it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ramirez examined the box.<\/p>\n<p>It was locked.<\/p>\n<p>A tiny key had been taped beneath it.<\/p>\n<p>Denise looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMrs. Carter, I need you to understand that we may have to ask you for another statement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is in there?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t know yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ramirez removed the key.<\/p>\n<p>The lock clicked.<\/p>\n<p>Inside were folded pieces of paper.<\/p>\n<p>A handful of receipts.<\/p>\n<p>Two photographs.<\/p>\n<p>And a child\u2019s pink sock.<\/p>\n<p>Only one.<\/p>\n<p>Ramirez\u2019s face changed when she saw it.<\/p>\n<p>She lifted the photograph nearest the top.<\/p>\n<p>I could not see the whole image from where I stood.<\/p>\n<p>I saw enough.<\/p>\n<p>A child\u2019s bare ankle.<\/p>\n<p>A dark mark.<\/p>\n<p>Then another mark above it.<\/p>\n<p>Ramirez immediately lowered the photograph.<\/p>\n<p>Denise closed her notebook.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLaura, I think we have what we need from you for now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the box.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSadie left that here on purpose.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Neither woman answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe wanted me to find it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t know that yet,\u201d Denise said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut she wrote her grandmother\u2019s number inside the backpack.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ramirez looked at Denise.<\/p>\n<p>That detail mattered.<\/p>\n<p>I pointed toward the lid.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd that says it\u2019s for her grandmother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ramirez asked, \u201cWas the telephone number hidden?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnder the flap.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCould Sadie have put it there herself?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI suppose.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you mention finding the number to anyone besides Mrs. Gable?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot Sadie\u2019s mother?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKurt?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbsolutely not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ramirez nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKeep it that way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A chill moved through me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoes Kurt know anyone is investigating?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re handling contact.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat wasn\u2019t my question.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ramirez studied me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d she said finally. \u201cAs far as we know, he does not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The two women packed the contents carefully.<\/p>\n<p>Before leaving, Denise paused at my door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou did the right thing by calling the school.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI waited two days.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou called.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI almost took the backpack straight to their house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut you didn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the evidence bag in Ramirez\u2019s hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happens if Sadie has to go back there?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Denise\u2019s expression remained professional.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re working on keeping her safe while we establish what happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I watched them leave.<\/p>\n<p>For several hours, nobody called.<\/p>\n<p>Emma came home at three fifteen.<\/p>\n<p>She dropped her schoolbag by the stairs and walked directly into the kitchen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere\u2019s Sadie?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The question startled me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe wasn\u2019t in class after lunch.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned toward the sink.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe had to leave.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know what I\u2019m allowed to tell you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emma frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re acting weird.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs Sadie sick?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs she in trouble?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That answer I could give immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe is absolutely not in trouble.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emma watched me.<\/p>\n<p>Then she asked, \u201cIs Kurt in trouble?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned around.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would you ask that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emma\u2019s face changed.<\/p>\n<p>It was the unmistakable expression of a child realizing she had revealed something accidentally.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEmma.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at the floor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy did you ask about Kurt?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, you do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She picked at a loose thread on her sleeve.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSadie doesn\u2019t like him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow do you know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe just doesn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHas she told you something?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emma\u2019s eyes filled with alarm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAm I going to get her in trouble?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPromise?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI promise you that telling me something Sadie said will not make me angry with her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s not what I mean.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emma swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe said if grown-ups knew, they\u2019d send Waffles away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room seemed to contract around me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHer guinea pig?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emma nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen did she say that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA while ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow long?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe before summer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did she say grown-ups would find out?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEmma.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI really don\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She began crying.<\/p>\n<p>I immediately regretted the pressure in my voice.<\/p>\n<p>I pulled out a chair.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSit down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI promised.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re not betraying her by telling me something that might keep her safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe said Kurt knows when she tells.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emma wiped her cheek.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe said he checks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChecks what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I thought of the sneakers.<\/p>\n<p>The photographed ankle.<\/p>\n<p>The single sock.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat else?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emma stared at me.<\/p>\n<p>Then she whispered, \u201cSadie asked me something at the sleepover.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe asked if you were brave.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I could barely speak.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you tell her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI said you yell at spiders.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite everything, a startled laugh escaped me.<\/p>\n<p>Emma looked miserable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told her you were brave about people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My laugh vanished.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen did she ask?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBefore we went to sleep.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBefore I talked to her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emma nodded.<\/p>\n<p>The forgotten backpack.<\/p>\n<p>The hidden telephone number.<\/p>\n<p>The locked box.<\/p>\n<p>For Grandma Only.<\/p>\n<p>I understood then that the sleepover might never have been
