Whatever was happening, I did not want three other children listening from six feet away.<\/p>\n<p>Instead I sat at the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverybody sleep okay?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A chorus of complaints followed.<\/p>\n<p>Claire said Emma kicked.<\/p>\n<p>Emma denied it.<\/p>\n<p>Another girl claimed somebody had been talking in her sleep.<\/p>\n<p>Sadie concentrated on cutting her pancake into small squares.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSadie?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her knife stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you sleep all right?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, ma\u2019am.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She resumed cutting.<\/p>\n<p>I noticed she had eaten less than half.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWant eggs?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, thank you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFruit?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, thank you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can take something for later.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes rose.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cReally?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I expected her to choose a granola bar.<\/p>\n<p>Instead she carefully wrapped the remaining pancake in a paper napkin.<\/p>\n<p>She slid it into the side pocket of her overnight bag.<\/p>\n<p>I pretended not to notice.<\/p>\n<p>At nine thirty, parents began arriving.<\/p>\n<p>The house emptied gradually until only Emma and Sadie remained.<\/p>\n<p>Emma was on the floor assembling one of her birthday gifts when an engine sounded outside.<\/p>\n<p>Sadie froze.<\/p>\n<p>Not startled.<\/p>\n<p>Frozen.<\/p>\n<p>I looked through the front window.<\/p>\n<p>A white pickup had stopped at the curb.<\/p>\n<p>Kurt was driving.<\/p>\n<p>Sadie\u2019s mother sat beside him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s your mom,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>Sadie stood.<\/p>\n<p>Her movements became efficient and mechanical. Sleeping bag rolled. Backpack zipped. Jacket over one arm.<\/p>\n<p>She checked her shoes.<\/p>\n<p>Actually checked them.<\/p>\n<p>Both knots.<\/p>\n<p>Both tongues.<\/p>\n<p>Both ankles covered.<\/p>\n<p>Then she hugged Emma.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThanks for inviting me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emma squeezed her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCome again next weekend.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sadie smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll ask.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She turned toward me.<\/p>\n<p>For a moment I thought she was going to say goodbye.<\/p>\n<p>Instead she wrapped both arms around my waist.<\/p>\n<p>The force surprised me.<\/p>\n<p>Her cheek pressed against my stomach.<\/p>\n<p>I put one hand lightly between her shoulder blades.<\/p>\n<p>She held on.<\/p>\n<p>The pickup horn sounded.<\/p>\n<p>Sadie did not release me.<\/p>\n<p>It sounded again.<\/p>\n<p>Her body tightened.<\/p>\n<p>Then she stepped away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThank you for letting me stay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re welcome anytime.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes stayed on mine.<\/p>\n<p>Something passed through them that I could not name.<\/p>\n<p>Then she went outside.<\/p>\n<p>Her mother greeted her from the passenger seat.<\/p>\n<p>Kurt did not get out.<\/p>\n<p>He watched from behind the steering wheel.<\/p>\n<p>I watched Sadie climb into the rear seat.<\/p>\n<p>The truck pulled away.<\/p>\n<p>Emma appeared beside me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy are you staring?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed the curtain.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHelp me clean up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She groaned theatrically and went back to the den.<\/p>\n<p>I spent the next hour collecting cups, blankets and torn wrapping paper.<\/p>\n<p>Every ordinary task gave me another opportunity to argue with myself.<\/p>\n<p>Children bruised themselves.<\/p>\n<p>Nine-year-olds climbed trees, fell from bicycles, crashed into playground equipment.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps the wrist mark had an innocent explanation.<\/p>\n<p>The shoes might be orthopedic.<\/p>\n<p>Sadie might simply be anxious.<\/p>\n<p>Kurt\u2019s name might have nothing to do with the bruise.<\/p>\n<p>But those explanations did not fit together.<\/p>\n<p>I found myself standing beside the trash can holding an empty pizza box.<\/p>\n<p>He finds out.<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>I carried the box outside.<\/p>\n<p>When I returned, I found Emma holding Sadie\u2019s backpack.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe forgot this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The sight of it made my heart jump.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPut it down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emma stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was just\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSorry. Put it on the table, please.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She did.<\/p>\n<p>I softened my voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll call her mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know her number.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Neither did I.<\/p>\n<p>The birthday invitations had gone through school, and Emma had coordinated half the sleepover herself.<\/p>\n<p>I checked the backpack for an identification tag.<\/p>\n<p>There was none.<\/p>\n<p>I opened the front pocket.<\/p>\n<p>A pencil.<\/p>\n<p>Two hair ties.<\/p>\n<p>A library card.<\/p>\n<p>A folded drawing of a guinea pig.<\/p>\n<p>Then I saw writing inside the top flap.<\/p>\n<p>A strip of old adhesive tape had been fixed beneath the seam.<\/p>\n<p>On it, in blue ink, was a telephone number.<\/p>\n<p>Above the number was one word.<\/p>\n<p>GRANDMA.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at it.<\/p>\n<p>Emma leaned over my shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs that Sadie\u2019s grandma?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProbably.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCall her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I nearly did.<\/p>\n<p>My fingers were already around the kitchen phone.<\/p>\n<p>Then doubt returned.<\/p>\n<p>What would I say?<\/p>\n<p>Hello, your granddaughter slept at my house and refused to remove her shoes?<\/p>\n<p>I saw a bruise?<\/p>\n<p>She said something unsettling about her mother\u2019s boyfriend?<\/p>\n<p>Was I about to detonate a family crisis based on a child\u2019s ambiguous sentence?<\/p>\n<p>I set the receiver down.<\/p>\n<p>Emma looked disappointed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re not calling?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll get the backpack to her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll figure it out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emma shrugged and disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>I remained at the table.<\/p>\n<p>The number waited inside the bag.<\/p>\n<p>For most of Saturday, I found reasons not to dial it.<\/p>\n<p>By evening, those reasons sounded less like caution and more like cowardice.<\/p>\n<p>Sunday was worse.<\/p>\n<p>I kept remembering Sadie guarding her food.<\/p>\n<p>Her automatic apology.<\/p>\n<p>The twenty minutes behind a locked bathroom door.<\/p>\n<p>The way she had inspected the knots in her shoes before going home.<\/p>\n<p>By Sunday night, I knew I needed somebody with more experience than I had.<\/p>\n<p>At eight Monday morning, I called Emma\u2019s school.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCould I speak with Mrs. Gable?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The receptionist recognized my voice from PTA meetings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne moment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost hung up while I waited.<\/p>\n<p>Then Mrs. Gable answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood morning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHi. It\u2019s Laura Carter. Emma Carter\u2019s mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLaura. Of course. What can I do for you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI need to ask you something about one of Emma\u2019s classmates.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her tone changed subtly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhich student?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSadie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat about Sadie?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I explained the sleepover.<\/p>\n<p>Not dramatically.<\/p>\n<p>I told her about the shoes.<\/p>\n<p>Sadie\u2019s refusal to remove them.<\/p>\n<p>The comment about Kurt.<\/p>\n<p>The wrist.<\/p>\n<p>I expected Mrs. Gable to tell me I was overreacting.<\/p>\n<p>Instead there was silence.<\/p>\n<p>Then I heard a door close at her end of the line.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLaura?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStart again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My mouth went dry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom where?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom the moment Sadie arrived.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I did.<\/p>\n<p>This time Mrs. Gable interrupted with precise questions.<\/p>\n<p>Exactly what had Sadie said?<\/p>\n<p>Had I seen her feet?<\/p>\n<p>No.<\/p>\n<p>Had Sadie changed clothes?<\/p>\n<p>No.<\/p>\n<p>Had she complained of pain?<\/p>\n<p>No.<\/p>\n<p>Had Kurt entered my house?<\/p>\n<p>No.<\/p>\n<p>Had Sadie\u2019s mother been present when she left?<\/p>\n<p>Yes.<\/p>\n<p>When I finished, Mrs. Gable exhaled slowly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Sadie leave anything at your house?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHer backpack.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t take it to her house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I sat straighter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m going to ask you not to contact Kurt either.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is happening?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t discuss confidential information about a student.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen tell me whether I should be worried.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think you already are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn\u2019t an answer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s the answer I can give you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked toward the backpack.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMrs. Gable, has somebody else reported something?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t tell you that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her refusal told me enough.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat should I do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m going to make some calls.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat kind of calls?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLaura.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Sadie said exactly what you told me she said, please write it down now. Use her words as accurately as you can remember them. Don\u2019t interpret them. Don\u2019t add conclusions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My hand was already reaching for a pen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOkay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlso write down what you observed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe bruise?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I began writing.<\/p>\n<p>Shoes remained on.<\/p>\n<p>Would not change.<\/p>\n<p>Guarded food.<\/p>\n<p>Bruise left wrist.<\/p>\n<p>Kurt.<\/p>\n<p>Feet tell.<\/p>\n<p>The words looked worse on paper.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMrs. Gable?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you think is under those shoes?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She did not answer immediately.<\/p>\n<p>When she finally spoke, her voice was quieter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That should have reassured me.<\/p>\n<p>It did not.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I think,\u201d she continued, \u201cwe need to make sure Sadie gets the chance to answer that question somewhere she feels safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I gripped the pen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happens now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow I follow procedure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Sadie?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m going to find her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A knock sounded faintly through her phone.<\/p>\n<p>Mrs. Gable said something away from the receiver.<\/p>\n<p>Then she returned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have to go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWait.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShould I call her grandmother?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. Not yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause right now we don\u2019t know who knows what.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The line went dead.<\/p>\n<p>I sat at the kitchen table staring at Sadie\u2019s backpack.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time, it no longer looked like something a child had accidentally forgotten.<\/p>\n<p>It looked like evidence.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=12502\">Click here to continue reading: PART 3: The School Counselor Asked One Question About Sadie\u2019s Forgotten Backpack That Made the Entire Weekend Feel Deliberately Arranged<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I wish I could say I acted immediately.
