Robert Foster through the front window.

For years, he had been the man neighbors trusted when something felt wrong.

Now Noah was telling us Robert had spoken privately with Mark about Rebecca and a file destroyed fourteen years earlier.

Officer Ramirez crouched beside Noah.

“Are you certain that’s the same man?”

Noah nodded.

“I heard his voice.”

“Where?”

“Our garage.”

He explained that Mark had ordered him upstairs, but Noah returned because he wanted his red toy truck.

From the garage he heard Mark tell Robert that Emily had discovered Rebecca’s name.

Robert’s response had been blunt.

Mark had waited too long.

Then Mark accused him of promising nothing from the old case remained.

Noah remembered Robert becoming angry.

“He said he already buried it once.”

Ramirez wrote down every word.

Then she went outside to speak with him.

Robert denied the conversation.

He suggested Noah had misunderstood something he overheard.

“I didn’t,” Noah said when Ramirez returned.

“I know what I heard.”

“I believe you remember it that way,” Ramirez told him carefully. “We still have to prove what happened.”

Her radio sounded.

Detectives wanted Emily’s documents collected formally.

Mark, meanwhile, had begun telling a different story.

According to him, Emily had invaded his financial privacy, become obsessed with Rebecca, threatened to destroy him, and then left voluntarily.

“Then explain the call,” I said.

“We’ll verify it,” Ramirez replied.

That was the maddening difference between knowing something in your bones and proving it in court.

My phone buzzed.

Unknown sender.

The message warned that I should have listened to Mark.

A second arrived.

Someone claimed Unit 314 was already empty.

I showed Ramirez.

“How could anyone know about the storage unit?”

Unless the call had been monitored.

Unless Mark had told someone.

Unless the person who had helped him fourteen years ago had never stopped helping.

A third message appeared.

It told me to ask my neighbor what happened at Pine Ridge.

I looked through the window.

Robert was gone.

His sidewalk was empty.

“Where did he go?”

An officer checked his property.

His car was missing.

At that point police had not had sufficient grounds to hold him.

The name Pine Ridge bothered me.

Then I remembered the missing-person flyer.

I ran downstairs with Ramirez.

Rebecca’s car had been found near Pine Ridge Trailhead.

The anonymous sender knew details of the case.

My phone buzzed again.

A photograph arrived.

Grainy.

Nighttime.

Rebecca’s car beside a line of trees.

The timestamp showed August 14, 2010.

Two men stood near the vehicle.

One was young, thin, dark-haired.

Mark.

The second was older and heavier.

He appeared to be wearing a uniform.

I enlarged the image.

Even fourteen years earlier, I recognized Robert Foster.

Ramirez preserved the photograph immediately while warning me that its authenticity would need verification.

The sender followed with another message.

Robert had not yet retired that night.

A records check confirmed he had served with the county sheriff’s department until 2018.

But he had never been officially assigned to Rebecca Collins’s disappearance.

Which created a worse question.

Why had an off-duty—or at least unassigned—officer been standing beside her abandoned vehicle with her husband near midnight?

Detectives contacted Lakeview Storage.

Unit 314 had already been opened.

Not by police.

Someone had accessed it less than an hour earlier.

I felt panic climb into my throat.

Emily’s laptop might already be gone.

Then Noah appeared in the basement doorway.

“Aunt Sarah?”

“What?”

“Mom hid another thing.”

Ramirez stopped speaking.

“Where?”

“At Grandma’s.”

My what?”

“The video.”

Rebecca’s video.

Emily had anticipated the storage unit being compromised.

I called Mom.

No answer.

Again.

Voicemail.

Then I remembered her itinerary. Her ship should have reached Juneau that morning.

I typed an emergency message telling her not to reveal where Emily’s package was.

The instant it sent, regret hit me.

If someone had access to our communications, I had just confirmed another copy existed.

Mom called almost immediately.

“Sarah, what is happening?”

“Are you alone?”

“Yes.”

“Did Emily leave anything with you?”

Silence.

“How do you know?”

“What?”

“A metal case.”

“Where is it?”

“At home.”

My mother’s house was four hours away.

“Where exactly?”

“Sarah—”

“Please.”

“The attic. constantly.

Groceries.

Repairs.

The furnace.

Her garden.

Every favor had given him another reason to be trusted.

Mom remembered something else.

Emily had visited her twice before the cruise.

On the second visit, she asked about an accident Mark supposedly suffered before they met.

Three weeks in a hospital.

August 2010.

The same month Rebecca disappeared.

Except Emily had tried to verify the hospitalization.

The hospital had no record of Mark.

While Mom spoke, another anonymous photograph reached my phone.

Her house.

Taken that night.

A man stood on the porch with a flashlight.

Dark jacket.

Baseball cap.

The message beneath it warned that someone else was searching for the copy.

Ramirez dispatched officers.

“Mom, stay on the ship.”

“What is happening?”

“Do not return home and don’t tell anyone about the metal case.”

Minutes later, police reached her property.

The front door stood open.

No sign of forced entry.

Someone had used a key.

They checked the attic.

The metal case was gone.

I leaned against the kitchen counter.

Too late.

Then Ramirez raised a finger.

Police had found something else.

A handwritten note.

Three words.

FOLLOW THE NUMBERS.

Noah gasped.

“I know that.”

“What numbers?”

He ran upstairs.

We followed him to the guest bedroom.

Mark had left its contents scattered everywhere.

Noah picked up the red toy truck.

On the underside, written in black marker, were four numbers.

3 — 17 — 8 — 26.

“What do they eight?”

“I forgot.”

Tyler, who had been silent for most of the night, said, “Could it be a year?”

Maybe.

But then what was twenty-six?

Coordinates?

Pages?

A code?

A locker?

Before we could solve it, Ramirez received a call.

Her posture changed.

“What happened?” I asked.

She ended the call.

“Mark is no longer in custody.”

For several seconds I simply stared.

“What does that answer.

She did not need to.

Emily’s warning came back with awful clarity.

Someone inside law enforcement had helped Mark before.

My phone vibrated.

No number appeared.

Only a message.

He was coming back.

I looked toward the windows.

Robert’s house across the street was dark.

Mark was gone.

Robert was gone.

And Emily’s final memory card was sitting in an evidence bag inside the one house both men knew intimately.

Noah took my hand.

“Aunt Sarah.”

“What?”

He pointed toward the driveway.

A black sedan turned onto our street.

Slowly.

The same deliberate speed I had seen before.

It passed beneath a streetlight.

Noah’s face drained of color.

“That’s Dad’s other car.”

Ramirez ordered everyone away from the windows.

The sedan stopped three houses down.

A man stepped out.

Dark jacket.

Baseball cap.

He lifted his face into a neighbor’s porch light.

Mark.

Noah whispered, “Daddy.”

But Mark did not come toward us.

He looked across the street.

Robert Foster’s porch light blinked.

Once.

Twice.

Then darkness.

A signal.

Mark changed direction and disappeared between Robert’s house and the neighboring fence.

Police moved after him.

Shouts broke out.

Someone ran.

Then a second suspect was reported.

For several seconds every sound came from outside.

Until something struck my basement window.

Glass shattered below us.

Noah screamed.

Ramirez drew her weapon and went downstairs with another officer.

No intruder.

Only a brick on the floor.

A note had been tied around it.

ONE COPY ISN’T ENOUGH.

YOU HAVE UNTIL MIDNIGHT.

I read it twice.

“Midnight for what?”

Behind me, Noah whispered, “You weren’t supposed to find that yet.”

I turned.

“What?”

He pointed toward the evidence bag containing the memory card.

“Mom said if they found out about the little card, we had to leave.”

“Go where?”

“The place with the red door.”

“What red door?”

He began crying.

“I don’t know.”

I held him while searching my memory.

Then I saw it.

Dad’s workshop near Lake Mason.

Twenty miles outside town.

A weathered detached building where he repaired fishing equipment and old engines.

Its door had been painted bright red.

“I know where.”

Ramirez immediately said, “You’re not going alone.”

“Mark knows about it.”

“Does Foster?”

That question was worse.

Dad had taken Robert fishing.

“Yes.”

The radio crackled.

Police had detained a man fleeing Robert’s backyard.

Not Mark.

Not Robert.

A stranger.

In his pocket was a key to Robert’s house.

And another key.

Its label read 314.

The storage unit.

Officers at Lakeview Storage confirmed the lock had been cut.

The laptop was gone.

But whoever emptied the unit had missed something.

A small digital recorder had been taped beneath a shelf.

It still worked.

An officer began checking its contents.

I looked at the memory card.

Then the numbers on Noah’s truck.

Then the dark street where Mark and Robert had vanished.

Emily had expected her evidence to be stolen.

Rebecca had apparently expected the same thing years earlier.

Which meant the truth had never depended on one copy.

Somewhere between the recorder, the memory card, the numbers, and Dad’s red-doored workshop was the thing Mark and Robert had spent fourteen years trying to bury.

And now they knew we were looking for it.
