briefly.

The final words were almost inaudible.

Carol asked:

“Do you hate me?”

My mother took a long time forgiveness.”

The tape ended.

No one spoke.

Lily leaned against me.

I put my arm around her.

For years, Carol had apparently carried proof that Eleanor understood everything.

The affair.

The financial pressure.

The attempted incapacity narrative.

The danger to both daughters.

Why keep it?

Maybe guilt.

Maybe insurance.

Maybe because my mother had told her to.

Then Arthur took it.

Because the recording destroyed his favorite defense.

Eleanor had not been confused.

She had been precise.

She had even offered him a path forward.

Leave Diane's inheritance intact.

Raise her.

Move on.

He chose otherwise.

“What does this change legally?” I asked.

Sanders answered carefully.

“It corroborates several facts and may undermine claims about Eleanor's capacity.”

“Does it prove Dad committed fraud?”

“Not alone.”

“Then why was he afraid of it?”

Morales answered.

“Because investigations aren't built from one document.”

He gestured toward the cassette.

“They're built from decisions.

Arthur's incapacity strategy.

It turned disconnected papers into a coherent history.

Lily stared at the recorder.

“My mom kept it.”

“Yes.”

“Then Dad took it.”

“Yes.”

“She could have given it to police days didn't you tell police where he might keep it?”

“I didn't know.”

“Why didn't you tell them everything Mom said?”

Carol looked at me.

“I was ashamed.”

I felt no sympathy.

Not then.

“That's still about you.”

She flinched.

“Yes.”

Lily leaned forward.

“Eleanor told you not to let Dad use me.”

Carol began sobbing.

“I know.”

“And then you let him.”

“I disappeared.

“Yes.”

Lily stared at her mother for a long time.

Then she asked:

“Why did you keep the tape?”

Carol wiped her face.

“Because Eleanor told me to.”

That surprised me.

“For ten years?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Carol looked toward the transcript.

“Every time Arthur told me she had been paranoid, I listened.”

My skin prickled.

“He tried to convince you too.”

“Yes.”

“That she imagined everything.”

“Yes.”

“And you knew he was lying.”

Carol nodded.

“Sometimes knowing somebody is lying doesn't stop you from wanting the lie to be true.”

That was the first thing she had said that sounded completely tightened.

Carol had finally resisted.

Arthur searched her things.

Found the recording.

Then used Ventura and the recording to pressure her into Magnolia.

“What did he say?” I asked.

Carol looked at me.

“That if I turned on him, he'd say the recording proved I manipulated nod.

“I know.”

Lily stood.

“Then do it.”

We left.

Outside, she breathed deeply.

“You okay?”

“No.”

We both laughed quietly.

That answer had become useful.

My phone rang.

Morales.

Arthur had requested another meeting through counsel.

Not with me.

With Carol.

“Why?”

“He says he wants to correct the record.”

I almost laughed.

“Is she meeting happened the following morning.

Carol wore a recording device with legal authorization and entered an attorney conference room where Arthur waited.

We heard the recording later.

Arthur's first words were:

Did they find Eleanor's tape?

Carol answered:

Yes.

Silence.

Then Arthur said:

Then we have one option left.

Carol asked:

What option?

His answer was quiet.

The original will.

I looked at Sanders.

He went pale.

“What?”

“The will we have is original.”

He shook his head slowly.

“No.”

“What?”

“Eleanor executed an earlier will.”

My stomach tightened.

“What did it say?”

Sanders looked toward the recording.

“Arthur inherited almost
