Want dinner afterward?<\/p>\n<p>I answered:<\/p>\n<p>Yes.<\/p>\n<p>No hesitation.<\/p>\n<p>A week later, Grant and I ate takeout on Diane&#39;s porch while she slept inside.<\/p>\n<p>He told me about therapy.<\/p>\n<p>I told him about work.<\/p>\n<p>We argued mildly about whether a television show we&#39;d once loved had become terrible.<\/p>\n<p>He was wrong.<\/p>\n<p>Obviously.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing dramatic happened.<\/p>\n<p>And that was precisely why I noticed it.<\/p>\n<p>The ordinary days were accumulating.<\/p>\n<p>Not erasing Christmas.<\/p>\n<p>Not undoing ninety days.<\/p>\n<p>Building something beside them.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of the evening, Grant walked me to my car.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;I&#39;ve been thinking about asking you something.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;What?&quot;<\/p>\n<p>He put his hands into his pockets.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;I don&#39;t want an answer tonight.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;That&#39;s ominous.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;It&#39;s not.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>He smiled nervously.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;I want us to go to counseling together.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>I stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Marriage counseling?&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Yes.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;We&#39;re separated.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;I know.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;And you want counseling to get back together.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>He shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;No.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Then why?&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;To figure out whether we should.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>That answer stopped me.<\/p>\n<p>Grant continued.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;I don&#39;t want us drifting back into marriage because things feel better.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>I listened.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;And I don&#39;t want us getting divorced because we&#39;re afraid to test whether something better is possible.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>My throat tightened.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;I want us to make an actual decision.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him beneath the porch light.<\/p>\n<p>Months earlier, Grant had wanted instructions.<\/p>\n<p>Then forgiveness.<\/p>\n<p>Then reassurance.<\/p>\n<p>Now he was asking for a place where neither of us could hide behind old roles.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;I&#39;ll think about it.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;That&#39;s all I&#39;m asking.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>He kissed my forehead.<\/p>\n<p>Then stepped back.<\/p>\n<p>I drove home with the question beside me.<\/p>\n<p>Counseling would mean opening everything again.<\/p>\n<p>Christmas.<\/p>\n<p>The hospital.<\/p>\n<p>My father.<\/p>\n<p>His father.<\/p>\n<p>The resentment.<\/p>\n<p>The years of invisible work.<\/p>\n<p>The parts of our marriage that had been genuinely good.<\/p>\n<p>The parts we&#39;d both mistaken for good because they were familiar.<\/p>\n<p>It would mean risking an answer.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe we could rebuild.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe we couldn&#39;t.<\/p>\n<p>For months, uncertainty had protected me from making the wrong decision.<\/p>\n<p>Now I began to see that uncertainty could become another hiding place.<\/p>\n<p>The following morning, before I could talk myself out of it, I called Grant.<\/p>\n<p>He answered sleepily.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Rachel?&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;I&#39;ll do counseling.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>Then, &quot;Okay.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;But I have one condition.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Anything.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Don&#39;t say anything.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>He stopped.<\/p>\n<p>I almost smiled.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;My condition is that the goal cannot be staying married.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>A pause.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Okay.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;The goal has to be telling the truth.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Grant&#39;s answer came quietly.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Yes.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;And if the truth takes us apart\u2014&quot;<\/p>\n<p>My voice caught.<\/p>\n<p>He finished for me.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Then we let it.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;And if it doesn&#39;t?&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Grant breathed.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Then maybe we finally learn how to stay.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>For the first time, I understood the next part of our marriage\u2014or the end of it\u2014would not be decided by the worst thing Grant had done.<\/p>\n<p>It would be decided by what both of us were willing to do with the truth afterward.<\/p>\n<p>And this time, neither of us would be allowed to look away.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=12405\">Click here to continue reading: PART 13: Our Counselor Asked One Question Neither of Us Could Answer Without Admitting What Our Marriage Had Really Become<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Grant reached Mom before I did.
