I loved that you brought dishes to holidays. I loved that you called doctors and handled paperwork and made Grant better at family."

She swallowed.

"I thanked you for doing all of it instead of asking why he wasn't."

I had never thought of it that way.

"I helped teach him that women take care of what men forget."

The words landed heavily.

"That isn't all on you."

"I know."

She smiled faintly.

"But some of it is."

I sat across from her.

"Why are you telling me this?"

"Because if you stay married to my son, I don't want you thinking you owe me anything."

Her eyes sharpened.

"And if you leave him, I don't want you thinking you'll lose me."

I looked at her.

"Diane."

"I mean it."

Something in my chest broke open.

Not painfully.

Tenderly.

"I don't know what's going to happen."

"Good."

"Good?"

"Anyone who knows exactly what they're doing after a year like this is probably lying."

I laughed.

She smiled.

Then she reached across the small table and squeezed my hand.

At that moment, headlights moved across the front window.

A car door closed.

Diane glanced toward the hallway.

"That's Grant."

My stomach tightened.

"I didn't know he was coming."

"He brings dinner Wednesdays."

Of course he did.

The front door opened.

Grant stepped inside carrying grocery bags.

"Mom, I got the—"

He stopped.

His eyes found me.

For several seconds, none of us spoke.

Then Diane looked between us.

"Wonderful."

She pushed herself upright with the cane.

"I'm suddenly exhausted."

"Mom," Grant said.

"Very exhausted."

She started toward the den.

"You two figure out dinner."

Then, without looking back, she added, "And for once in your lives, don't make me responsible for either of you."

The door closed behind her.

Grant and I stood alone in his mother's kitchen.

He lifted the grocery bags slightly.

"I bought too much pasta."

I looked at him.

"Apparently that's hereditary."

His mouth curved.

"Stay?"

The question was gentle.

Not an assumption.

Not a plea.

I looked toward the dark window.

Then at the table.

Then back at my husband.

"Okay."

And for the first time in months, I stayed because nobody needed me to.

Click here to continue reading: PART 8: In Diane’s Kitchen, One Ordinary Evening Revealed Whether Grant Had Truly Changed—or Had Simply Learned Better Words

The restaurant was half empty when I arrived.
