before.

She carried June’s clothes.

My jewelry pouch had been in the same suitcase.

“What was the liaison’s name?”

Serrano checked the log.

No social-services liaison had been assigned.

The woman was fake.

Rachel.

She had been inside the protected apartment.

Touched my suitcase.

Possibly activated the token.

Then disappeared.

The analyst looked at the reserve.

“Authentication remains valid for seventy-two hours.”

The duplicate key no longer mattered.

Rachel had already used it.

“What does she still need?”

The analyst answered.

“Your death.”

My name.

Officially dead.

That was the final trigger.

At 4:11, a statewide alert went out to every vital-records office.

No record involving Celia Mercer could be processed without direct verification.

At 4:43, Rachel tried anyway.

A death certificate appeared in a rural county system.

Cause:

Motor vehicle accident.

Time of death:

6:07 a.m.

Today.

A time that had not happened yet.

The clerk processing it noticed the alert and stopped submission.

Rachel abandoned the terminal before police arrived.

But for the first time, she had made a mistake.

Security camera captured her.

Clear face.

Clear vehicle.

Clear plate.

At 5:02, highway patrol located the car.

Pursuit began.

At 5:19, spike strips stopped it.

Rachel ran into a field.

At 5:27, she was arrested.

No weapon fired.

No hostage.

No dramatic final stand.

Just a woman in wet grass carrying forged death certificates in a plastic folder.

I looked at the clock.

5:31.

Forty-four minutes before the time Vaughn had expected the reserve to move.

For the first time, August eighteenth began to feel survivable.

Then the financial analyst frowned.

Again.

I almost laughed.

“What now?”

She turned the screen.

A death verification request had already entered the reserve system.

Not from Rachel’s failed rural filing.

Earlier.

Timestamp:

3:12 a.m.

Source:

Michigan.

Name:

Celia Mercer.

Status:

Deceased.

I stared.

“Who filed it?”

The analyst traced the credential.

Then looked up.

“It was certified by a physician.”

My stomach tightened.

“Which physician?”

The name appeared.

Dr. Elaina Porter.

Mallory’s former doctor.

Ruth’s niece.

The woman police had supposedly located and questioned.

I looked at Serrano.

“Where is Elaina right now?”

He called.

The officers assigned to her answered.

Elaina was gone.

And the woman they had been guarding for six hours was not Elaina Porter at all.

Click here to continue reading: PART 22: The Woman Guarded as Elaina Porter Was an Impostor, and the Real Doctor Had
