We\u2019re working on it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sophie whispered, \u201cMom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel said, \u201cClaire\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She interrupted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. Go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou need me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have Dad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She pointed at Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Eric.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eric looked surprised.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Dr. Shah.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She touched my hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Grandma might be alive, go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The last time Sophie told me to go, I found Laura\u2019s archive.<\/p>\n<p>This time I did not argue.<\/p>\n<p>Bell arranged transport.<\/p>\n<p>Before I left, I kissed Sophie\u2019s forehead.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLow compliance,\u201d she whispered.<\/p>\n<p>I smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRuns in the family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The lighthouse appeared just after midnight.<\/p>\n<p>White beam turning across black water.<\/p>\n<p>The keeper\u2019s cottage sat beyond a line of wind-bent trees.<\/p>\n<p>Federal agents had cleared it.<\/p>\n<p>I entered anyway as though someone might still answer.<\/p>\n<p>Laura\u2019s things were everywhere.<\/p>\n<p>Not many.<\/p>\n<p>Enough.<\/p>\n<p>A blue mug.<\/p>\n<p>Knitting needles.<\/p>\n<p>Prescription bottles with false names.<\/p>\n<p>A stack of newspapers.<\/p>\n<p>Then I saw the wall.<\/p>\n<p>Photographs.<\/p>\n<p>Me.<\/p>\n<p>Sophie.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>Eric.<\/p>\n<p>School plays.<\/p>\n<p>Soccer.<\/p>\n<p>Birthdays.<\/p>\n<p>Not intimate photographs.<\/p>\n<p>Public ones.<\/p>\n<p>Social media prints.<\/p>\n<p>School website images.<\/p>\n<p>My mother had watched us from a distance.<\/p>\n<p>For years.<\/p>\n<p>I touched a picture of Sophie holding a science-fair ribbon.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bell stood behind me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf she was alive, why didn\u2019t she come to me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He did not answer.<\/p>\n<p>Then an agent called from the bedroom.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFound something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A suitcase lay open on the bed.<\/p>\n<p>Inside were clothes.<\/p>\n<p>Medication.<\/p>\n<p>Cash.<\/p>\n<p>And a train ticket.<\/p>\n<p>Booked for tomorrow.<\/p>\n<p>Destination:<\/p>\n<p>Chicago.<\/p>\n<p>Passenger name:<\/p>\n<p>Laura Bell.<\/p>\n<p>Bell looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlias.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProbably.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the departure time.<\/p>\n<p>My mother might still be traveling.<\/p>\n<p>Still running.<\/p>\n<p>Still hiding.<\/p>\n<p>I picked up the ticket.<\/p>\n<p>On the bottom, someone had written by hand:<\/p>\n<p>CLAIRE IS NOT READY.<\/p>\n<p>I knew the handwriting.<\/p>\n<p>Laura\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>I folded the paper.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe knows we\u2019re looking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bell nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd she doesn\u2019t want to be found.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Not yet.<\/p>\n<p>That hurt in a way I had not expected.<\/p>\n<p>Finding out my mother might be alive had reopened a wound.<\/p>\n<p>Finding out she was choosing not to come back made it bleed differently.<\/p>\n<p>Then Bell\u2019s radio crackled.<\/p>\n<p>An agent downstairs had found something in the fireplace.<\/p>\n<p>Not burned completely.<\/p>\n<p>A torn envelope.<\/p>\n<p>Addressed to me.<\/p>\n<p>Only three sentences survived.<\/p>\n<p>Claire, if Sophie is sick, then Samuel failed.<\/p>\n<p>Do not let him tell you I disappeared because I stopped loving you.<\/p>\n<p>And one final line:<\/p>\n<p>I left because the person watching you was closer than anyone knew.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=12294\">Click here to continue reading: PART 22: Laura\u2019s Warning About Someone Close to Claire Turned the Investigation Toward the People Who Had Been Inside Her Family for Years<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I did not sleep after Bell\u2019s call.
