Now those directions seemed to bend toward the same place.<\/p>\n<p>The investigator standing nearest the desk, Detective Luis Serrano, looked at Brielle. \u201cYou\u2019re certain Marla is his sister?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brielle nodded. \u201cHalf sister. Same father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow do you know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVaughn got drunk here once. They argued. She called him her brother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Serrano wrote that down. \u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJune. Maybe late June.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Brielle. \u201cAnd you never thought to mention that while you were helping him take money from us?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She flinched but did not look away. \u201cAt the time, I thought the money was his.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy name was on the withdrawals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know that now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou watched him practice my signature.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her mouth tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. Marla told me you\u2019d already agreed. She said the signatures needed to match because the bank\u2019s scanners rejected sloppy forms.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost laughed at the absurdity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou believed that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brielle\u2019s face colored.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. Not completely.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That answer was more useful than another lie.<\/p>\n<p>Serrano separated the calendar from the other evidence. \u201cYou said Marla\u2019s initials might be M.H. Why H?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brielle rubbed the red mark on her wrist. \u201cKeene is her work name. Hale was her married name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Every person in the room looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHale?\u201d Denise asked.<\/p>\n<p>Brielle nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs in Brielle Hale?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy aunt married Marla\u2019s father after my mother died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re related.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot by blood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat didn\u2019t stop you from using the same last name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s my mother\u2019s name too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Serrano stepped between the questions before the room could fracture again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeptember second. M.H. Is that Marla?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brielle shook her head slowly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut you recognized the initials.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI recognize the last name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She pointed toward the calendar.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s another woman. Mallory Hale.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The pregnant woman in the restaurant photograph.<\/p>\n<p>Denise inhaled sharply.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour relative?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why Hale?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brielle closed her eyes briefly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause she married Vaughn.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For several seconds no one spoke.<\/p>\n<p>I heard the air-conditioning system click on.<\/p>\n<p>Then I said, \u201cMy husband is married to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brielle\u2019s voice came out thin.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. Legally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo what are you saying?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m saying Mallory believes she is married to him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach turned, although I thought I had exhausted my capacity for surprise.<\/p>\n<p>Serrano asked, \u201cCeremony?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMarriage license?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWisconsin, I think. Small ceremony. Last winter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I remembered Vaughn leaving for what he described as a three-day delivery route last December.<\/p>\n<p>He returned with a fever and a bottle of hotel shampoo he said had come from some roadside place outside Madison.<\/p>\n<p>I sat down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen is Mallory\u2019s baby due?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOctober.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd September second?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brielle looked toward the calendar.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Serrano took out his phone and stepped toward the hallway. He made two calls in rapid succession. One concerned Marla. The other concerned Mallory.<\/p>\n<p>Denise crouched beside me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t need to stay for every detail.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, I do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ve had almost no sleep.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNeither did Vaughn when he planned this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn\u2019t a reason to punish yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the calendar again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m trying not to miss something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was what frightened me now.<\/p>\n<p>Not only what Vaughn had done.<\/p>\n<p>What I still had not noticed.<\/p>\n<p>A forensic officer entered carrying evidence bags.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDetective?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Serrano returned.<\/p>\n<p>The officer handed him one bag containing a small black notebook.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFound behind the lower desk drawer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Serrano opened it carefully.<\/p>\n<p>Inside were dates and numbers.<\/p>\n<p>No complete names.<\/p>\n<p>Initials.<\/p>\n<p>Amounts.<\/p>\n<p>A.M. \u2014 215K.<\/p>\n<p>T.R. \u2014 380K.<\/p>\n<p>J.P. \u2014 500K.<\/p>\n<p>C.M. \u2014 750K.<\/p>\n<p>Then:<\/p>\n<p>M.H. \u2014 1.2M.<\/p>\n<p>I felt Denise\u2019s hand tighten around the back of my chair.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis isn\u2019t just us,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>Serrano did not answer.<\/p>\n<p>He did not need to.<\/p>\n<p>Each line contained three columns.<\/p>\n<p>Policy.<\/p>\n<p>Status.<\/p>\n<p>Distribution.<\/p>\n<p>Beside my initials, C.M., the status read ACTIVE.<\/p>\n<p>Distribution showed three percentages.<\/p>\n<p>V \u2014 40%.<\/p>\n<p>M \u2014 30%.<\/p>\n<p>M.K. \u2014 30%.<\/p>\n<p>Vaughn.<\/p>\n<p>Mallory.<\/p>\n<p>Marla Keene.<\/p>\n<p>Not Brielle.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou weren\u2019t the real beneficiary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her face drained.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut the document\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe amendment showed your name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s what Vaughn told me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Denise leaned closer to the notebook.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe the beneficiary form was temporary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Serrano turned several pages.<\/p>\n<p>There it was.<\/p>\n<p>A note beside my initials.<\/p>\n<p>B.H. FRONT ONLY.<\/p>\n<p>Brielle stepped backward as if someone had shoved her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was going to blame me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No one contradicted her.<\/p>\n<p>She gripped the counter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe put my name on the policy so if something happened\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe paper trail pointed at you,\u201d Denise said.<\/p>\n<p>Brielle stared at the notebook.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd once there was a claim?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe could amend again,\u201d Denise said. \u201cOr challenge the beneficiary. Or use another policy we haven\u2019t found.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brielle\u2019s breathing became shallow.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time, I saw something in her that looked like what I had felt the day before.<\/p>\n<p>Not guilt.<\/p>\n<p>Realization.<\/p>\n<p>The moment when a person discovers that the explanation they had been given was not merely incomplete.<\/p>\n<p>It had been constructed to place them exactly where someone else needed them.<\/p>\n<p>Serrano turned back toward Mallory\u2019s initials.<\/p>\n<p>M.H. \u2014 1.2M.<\/p>\n<p>Status: PENDING.<\/p>\n<p>Distribution:<\/p>\n<p>V \u2014 60%.<\/p>\n<p>M.K. \u2014 40%.<\/p>\n<p>No third person.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does pending mean?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCould mean a policy isn\u2019t active yet,\u201d Denise said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOr that whatever they planned hasn\u2019t happened,\u201d Serrano added.<\/p>\n<p>A uniformed officer entered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDetective, we located Marla Keene.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot at home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVehicle?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFound at O\u2019Hare parking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Serrano frowned. \u201cAirport?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFlight records?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeing checked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brielle whispered, \u201cShe\u2019s leaving.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Serrano looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf she is, we\u2019ll deal with it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His calm steadied the room, but not me.<\/p>\n<p>Because Vaughn\u2019s calendar showed August 18.<\/p>\n<p>Three days away.<\/p>\n<p>Marla apparently had a ticket out.<\/p>\n<p>And Mallory\u2019s date followed two weeks later.<\/p>\n<p>A pattern was taking shape.<\/p>\n<p>I just could not yet see its full outline.<\/p>\n<p>My phone vibrated.<\/p>\n<p>Mrs. Weaver.<\/p>\n<p>I answered immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre the kids okay?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her voice was controlled.<\/p>\n<p>Too controlled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a woman downstairs asking for you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My heart jumped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat woman?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPregnant. Blonde.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mallory.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo not let her upstairs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs she alone?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs far as I can see.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did she say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat she needs to speak to you before the police find her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stood.<\/p>\n<p>Serrano heard enough to understand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTell Mrs. Weaver not to engage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I repeated it.<\/p>\n<p>Then Serrano called officers near my apartment building.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would Mallory go there?\u201d Denise asked.<\/p>\n<p>Brielle shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe must know about Celia.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVaughn talks in his sleep.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite everything, Denise gave her a strange look.<\/p>\n<p>Brielle added, \u201cAnd he leaves passwords everywhere.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I asked the question none of us had yet asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Mallory thinks she married Vaughn, what did he tell her about me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brielle looked uncomfortable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said you died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For a second I thought I had misheard.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe told her you died two years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCar accident.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room seemed to tilt.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Denise looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the photographs of my brake lines.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe didn\u2019t invent the accident for the insurance company.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vaughn had been telling that story before the plan existed.<\/p>\n<p>Or perhaps the plan had existed much longer than I realized.<\/p>\n<p>Serrano told us to remain at Lakecrest while officers contacted Mallory.<\/p>\n<p>I ignored him for approximately thirty seconds.<\/p>\n<p>Then my phone rang again.<\/p>\n<p>Unknown number.<\/p>\n<p>I answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCelia?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mallory\u2019s voice.<\/p>\n<p>I had never heard it before.<\/p>\n<p>Young.<\/p>\n<p>Shaking.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re alive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The words broke something strange inside me.<\/p>\n<p>Not because they were dramatic.<\/p>\n<p>Because she genuinely sounded astonished.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh my God.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I heard her breathing.<\/p>\n<p>Then:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe showed me your obituary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat obituary?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA webpage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan you send it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have screenshots.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSend everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She began crying.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI married him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI heard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe told me his wife died. He told me he was raising your children with his mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vaughn\u2019s mother had been dead for five years.<\/p>\n<p>My children had been living three blocks from the apartment where he apparently built a second life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMallory, where are you now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAcross from your building.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPolice are coming.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fear entered her voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI need to tell you something before they take my phone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVaughn didn\u2019t meet me last winter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I waited.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe met me two years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Two years.<\/p>\n<p>Long before the empty savings account.<\/p>\n<p>Long before the grocery budget.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened two years ago?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mallory whispered, \u201cHe was already looking for someone named Celia to die.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room fell silent around me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe showed me an insurance application then. He said it belonged to his late wife.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My knees weakened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe told me the payout had been delayed because the police kept asking questions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Serrano stepped closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAsk her the policy amount.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I did.<\/p>\n<p>Mallory answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFive hundred thousand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Not my old policy.<\/p>\n<p>Another policy.<\/p>\n<p>Another amount.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat company?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t remember.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you still have the paperwork?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn my car.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo not touch it. Give it to the officers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mallory began speaking faster.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s more. I found boxes in our storage unit this morning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat boxes?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFiles.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhose?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople I don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She started listing names.<\/p>\n<p>The first meant nothing.<\/p>\n<p>The second meant nothing.<\/p>\n<p>The third made Serrano\u2019s head snap up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSay that again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mallory repeated it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJason Pritchard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>J.P.<\/p>\n<p>The notebook.<\/p>\n<p>500K.<\/p>\n<p>Serrano asked, \u201cWhat kind of file?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mallory opened something.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInsurance policy. Death certificate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My skin went cold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCause of death?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She read.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSingle-vehicle accident.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No one moved.<\/p>\n<p>Serrano took my phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMallory, listen carefully. Do not enter your car. Do not return to any address Vaughn has access to.
