I thought if NorthStar was exposed, I would go down with it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel said, \u201cSo you protected yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No argument.<\/p>\n<p>Bell\u2019s radio came alive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBasement breached.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stopped breathing.<\/p>\n<p>Then:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMultiple patients.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Patients.<\/p>\n<p>Plural.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Shah, who had insisted on accompanying the medical response team, moved forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow many?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bell listened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFour.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat ages?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnknown.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSophie?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another pause.<\/p>\n<p>Then Bell looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey found her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My legs nearly gave out.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlive?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel caught me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs she hurt?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConscious.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was all I needed.<\/p>\n<p>I ran.<\/p>\n<p>Bell shouted after me.<\/p>\n<p>I did not stop until two agents physically blocked the basement entrance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMa\u2019am.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy daughter is down there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cArea isn\u2019t cleared.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t care.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Shah reached us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet medical go first.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I hated every second.<\/p>\n<p>Then a stretcher appeared.<\/p>\n<p>Not Sophie.<\/p>\n<p>A teenage boy.<\/p>\n<p>Thin.<\/p>\n<p>Bald.<\/p>\n<p>Oxygen mask.<\/p>\n<p>Another followed.<\/p>\n<p>A girl perhaps sixteen.<\/p>\n<p>Then a smaller child.<\/p>\n<p>My stomach turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Hearth children,\u201d Eric whispered.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese are the ones who disappeared from follow-up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Shah stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019ve been here?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody knew.<\/p>\n<p>Then Sophie appeared.<\/p>\n<p>Walking.<\/p>\n<p>Nathan beside her.<\/p>\n<p>His shirt was bloody at the shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>An agent had a weapon trained on him.<\/p>\n<p>Sophie saw me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I broke through before anyone could stop me.<\/p>\n<p>She hit me hard enough to knock the breath out of both of us.<\/p>\n<p>I held her.<\/p>\n<p>Hair.<\/p>\n<p>Shoulders.<\/p>\n<p>Face.<\/p>\n<p>Everything.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re okay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou disappeared.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI got kidnapped.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is not better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She started crying.<\/p>\n<p>So did I.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel reached us.<\/p>\n<p>Sophie threw one arm around him without releasing me.<\/p>\n<p>He buried his face in her purple-streaked hair.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m never getting ice again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She laughed through tears.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s dumb.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m serious.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nathan sat against the wall.<\/p>\n<p>Blood soaked his sleeve.<\/p>\n<p>Bell cuffed one wrist.<\/p>\n<p>Nathan looked at Sophie.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe needs steroids. Her pressure symptoms increased.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Shah was already examining her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThank you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nathan nodded.<\/p>\n<p>That tiny exchange carried more weight than forgiveness.<\/p>\n<p>He had once withheld care.<\/p>\n<p>This time he had not.<\/p>\n<p>Eric approached.<\/p>\n<p>Sophie looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew this place.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow do you know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNathan told me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Of course Nathan did.<\/p>\n<p>Sophie stared at Eric.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWere kids here when you came?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you help them?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eric\u2019s face collapsed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was afraid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She considered that.<\/p>\n<p>Then looked at the stretchers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey were afraid too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eric lowered his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sophie did not say anything else.<\/p>\n<p>She did not need to.<\/p>\n<p>Bell\u2019s teams searched the lower laboratory.<\/p>\n<p>They found patient files.<\/p>\n<p>Old vectors.<\/p>\n<p>Drug formulations.<\/p>\n<p>Records of children NorthStar had continued monitoring after Samuel\u2019s program supposedly ended.<\/p>\n<p>Most important, they found a destruction order.<\/p>\n<p>Signed that morning.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas Voss.<\/p>\n<p>Bell showed it to us upstairs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was he destroying?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything associated with active Hearth subjects.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Laura\u2019s archive exposes the program.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was cleaning evidence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Sophie?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bell hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was listed as biological evidence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt something inside me become perfectly still.<\/p>\n<p>Not rage.<\/p>\n<p>Something colder.<\/p>\n<p>My daughter had been categorized beside frozen tissue and laboratory samples.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas the order to kill her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bell chose his words carefully.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe document authorizes termination and disposal of active biological assets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSay it plainly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bell met his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the document is authentic, Sophie was included in an order that could have resulted in her death.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nathan spoke from across the room.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s authentic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bell looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow do you know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI helped design the classification system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Everyone turned.<\/p>\n<p>Nathan\u2019s face tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t design it for children.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut it was used for them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked toward the basement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI spent twenty years telling myself the language made things less real.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid it?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Shah returned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSophie is stable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I breathed again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe needs to return to the hospital immediately, but I don\u2019t think we need emergency neurosurgery tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tonight.<\/p>\n<p>Good enough.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat about the other children?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVery sick.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom the vector?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome of them, probably.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan Laura\u2019s archive help?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re reviewing it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nathan said, \u201cIt can.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Shah looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t know that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know what Laura found.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou told me you didn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told you I didn\u2019t know whether the reversal worked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did she find?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nathan looked toward Bell.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want a deal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bell laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI give you everything I know about Hearth. Voss. Samuel. Facility 19. Every patient.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn exchange?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEmily receives access to Laura\u2019s protocol if the doctors believe it can help her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Shah answered before Bell.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMedical care is not a bargaining chip.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nathan looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen treat her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf she\u2019s a patient in need, we will.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His eyes filled.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time, Nathan looked less like the fake doctor and more like a father who had reached the end of every terrible choice he had made.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNorthStar has her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bell straightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVoss\u2019s private facility?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLocation?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey moved it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSix months ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bell crouched in front of him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou escaped federal custody. You stole evidence. You attacked Dr. Ortiz. You entered this facility. You expect me to believe you never found your daughter?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nathan\u2019s voice broke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI haven\u2019t seen Emily in eight months.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVoss uses her to control you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Laura\u2019s archive was your price for getting her back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nathan nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The shape of the entire chase changed again.<\/p>\n<p>Not innocence.<\/p>\n<p>Nathan had done too much for innocence.<\/p>\n<p>But coercion sat beside guilt.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes both occupied the same chair.<\/p>\n<p>Sophie was transported back to the hospital under armed escort.<\/p>\n<p>I rode with her.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel sat opposite us.<\/p>\n<p>She held my hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose kids downstairs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre they like me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn some ways.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause of Samuel?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd NorthStar.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She thought.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEric knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe knew some things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe didn\u2019t help.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you hate him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The question surprised me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m angry with him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s not what I asked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Children.<\/p>\n<p>Always removing the exits.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause hating him wouldn\u2019t change what he did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you hate Samuel?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked out the ambulance window.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVoss?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat one is easier.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel raised an eyebrow.<\/p>\n<p>I almost smiled.<\/p>\n<p>Back at the hospital, Sophie was returned to her room.<\/p>\n<p>The purple strand still lay on the pillow.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel picked it up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou left evidence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI shed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLike a criminal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLike a cat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She was asleep within minutes.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Shah joined us outside.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe analyzed the first portion of Laura\u2019s reversal work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s real.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My heart jumped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan it help Sophie?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I gave her a look.<\/p>\n<p>She corrected herself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a scientifically plausible mechanism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBetter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut Laura\u2019s protocol was incomplete.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Of course.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s missing?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA final sequence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Shah continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHer notes indicate she separated the protocol deliberately.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo prevent Samuel from using it without oversight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere\u2019s the second half?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Agent Bell approached.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe may know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He carried a recovered file from Facility 19.<\/p>\n<p>A handwritten notation appeared beside Laura\u2019s name.<\/p>\n<p>REVERSAL B \u2014 CUSTODIAN: M.O.<\/p>\n<p>Maria Ortiz.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Bell.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe has it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPossibly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We went to Maria\u2019s room.<\/p>\n<p>Empty.<\/p>\n<p>Bed stripped.<\/p>\n<p>IV disconnected.<\/p>\n<p>The guard outside was unconscious but breathing.<\/p>\n<p>Bell swore.<\/p>\n<p>Not again.<\/p>\n<p>A folded piece of paper sat on the pillow.<\/p>\n<p>My name was written across it.<\/p>\n<p>CLAIRE.<\/p>\n<p>I opened it.<\/p>\n<p>Maria\u2019s handwriting shook across the page.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel was right about one thing.
