She was sitting on a paper-covered examination table with her sneakers dangling several inches above the floor, worrying the frayed cuff of her sweatshirt between two fingers. A plastic hospital bracelet circled her wrist. She had been complaining about headaches for weeks, had thrown up before breakfast twice that week, and that morning had nearly walked into a row of lockers at school. None of those things had prepared me for the doctor returning with a second nurse and closing the door behind her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s something we need to discuss,\u201d Dr. Ortiz said.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel straightened beside me. \u201cWhat did the blood work show?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The doctor glanced at Sophie before answering. \u201cOne of the screening tests came back positive for hCG.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I knew the letters vaguely. I did not understand why her expression looked so careful.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel did.<\/p>\n<p>His hand slipped from the back of my chair.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Ortiz took a breath. \u201cIt\u2019s the hormone we most commonly associate with pregnancy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room seemed to lose its dimensions.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Sophie.<\/p>\n<p>She looked back at me, confused rather than frightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPregnancy?\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe repeated the test.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClaire\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. She\u2019s ten.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI understand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, you don\u2019t understand. She is ten years old.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sophie\u2019s face changed then. The word had reached her. She knew enough about pregnancy to understand that it belonged to a world she had not entered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I was beside her before I remembered standing.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Ortiz spoke gently. \u201cSophie, a laboratory result can happen for different reasons. We\u2019re trying to find out why yours looks this way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not pregnant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know that\u2019s what you\u2019re telling us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve never\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her voice stopped.<\/p>\n<p>She looked at Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel had gone pale.<\/p>\n<p>He crouched until his face was level with hers. \u201cYou don\u2019t have to explain anything to us, bug.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I didn\u2019t do anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The certainty in his answer steadied me.<\/p>\n<p>Then the door opened.<\/p>\n<p>Eric walked in without knocking.<\/p>\n<p>Sophie\u2019s biological father lived three states away and had arrived at the hospital less than twenty minutes earlier after I called him about the headaches and unexplained vomiting. He had spent most of that time demanding updates from anyone wearing scrubs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n<p>I stood. \u201cEric, not now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did the test show?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Ortiz stepped toward him. \u201cMr. Morgan, we\u2019re still evaluating Sophie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>Something in my face must have told him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I wished I could have taken the next minute out of all our lives.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was a positive hCG test.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eric stared at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Ortiz said, \u201cIt can be associated with pregnancy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His eyes moved to Sophie.<\/p>\n<p>Then to Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>I saw the thought form before he spoke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho has been alone with her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stood slowly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEric.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t do this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eric took a step toward him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy ten-year-old daughter has a positive pregnancy test.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd we don\u2019t know why.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe lives with you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sophie slid off the examination table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad, stop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Neither man heard her.<\/p>\n<p>Eric pointed at Daniel. \u201cHas anybody called the police?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach dropped.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stared at him as though he had spoken in another language.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you just say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEric.\u201d I caught his arm. \u201cStop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He pulled away. \u201cYou\u2019re telling me I\u2019m supposed to stand here calmly?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m telling you we know nothing yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, you don\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A nurse stepped into the doorway. Another hospital employee appeared behind her.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel looked toward Sophie.<\/p>\n<p>That was the moment he stopped defending himself.<\/p>\n<p>She was crying.<\/p>\n<p>Not loudly. Tears simply moved down her face while she stood against the examination table with both hands clenched at her sides.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel immediately backed away from Eric.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSophie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>Eric finally noticed.<\/p>\n<p>His anger faltered.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Ortiz moved between all of us. \u201cThis conversation is over. We need to examine Sophie, obtain imaging, and determine why the hormone is elevated. Until then, nobody in this room should be making assumptions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eric pointed toward Daniel again, though his hand was less certain now. \u201cHe shouldn\u2019t be alone with her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sophie shouted, \u201cHe didn\u2019t do anything!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>I had never heard my daughter use that voice.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel closed his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Ortiz called for the hospital social worker.<\/p>\n<p>Protocol took over after that.<\/p>\n<p>Questions were asked separately. Doors opened and closed. A security officer appeared because Eric had raised his voice in the hallway. Daniel cooperated with everything, even when cooperation meant being treated like a possible threat to the child whose lunches he packed every morning.<\/p>\n<p>Sophie became angrier with every question.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then, when a social worker carefully asked whether anyone had ever touched her in a way that made her uncomfortable, Sophie slammed both palms against the mattress.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNobody!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The woman remained calm. \u201cI believe you\u2019re telling me what you remember.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI remember everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSophie\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaniel is my dad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The social worker glanced at me.<\/p>\n<p>Sophie saw it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI understand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, you don\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She pointed toward the hallway where Daniel had been made to wait.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe taught me to ride my bike. He checks under my bed when I hear noises even though he says monsters would have to pay rent. He makes terrible pancakes. He did not do anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I pressed my knuckles against my mouth.<\/p>\n<p>The social worker lowered her clipboard.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sophie looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMake them let him back in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m trying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy did Eric say that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There was no answer that would make sense to a ten-year-old.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was scared.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo he lied?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe made an accusation before he knew the facts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s lying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes children leave adults nowhere to hide.<\/p>\n<p>I sat beside her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re going to find out what the test means.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She wiped her face roughly with her sleeve.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan pregnancy tests be wrong?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen it\u2019s wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I wanted that to be true so badly that for a moment I allowed myself to believe it.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Ortiz returned carrying a tablet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe ran the blood test again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe hCG is definitely elevated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sophie\u2019s fingers found mine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow elevated?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEnough that I don\u2019t think we\u2019re dealing with a faulty test.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The hope I had manufactured vanished.<\/p>\n<p>I heard Eric speaking loudly outside.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel answered once, too quietly for me to understand.<\/p>\n<p>Then the security officer said something to both of them.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Dr. Ortiz.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf she isn\u2019t lying, what else can cause this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are several possibilities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSuch as?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t want to speculate before imaging.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat means some of the possibilities are bad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her silence was answer enough.<\/p>\n<p>Sophie watched both of us.<\/p>\n<p>I forced my voice steady.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat imaging?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAn ultrasound first.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A technician arrived with a wheelchair.<\/p>\n<p>Sophie looked offended.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can walk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s hospital policy,\u201d the technician said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI walked in here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd now you get chauffeured.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That earned the smallest hint of a smile.<\/p>\n<p>Sophie climbed into the chair.<\/p>\n<p>As we reached the doorway, she saw Daniel sitting against the opposite wall.<\/p>\n<p>Eric stood several yards away with his arms crossed.<\/p>\n<p>A security officer remained between them.<\/p>\n<p>Sophie immediately reached toward Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stood.<\/p>\n<p>The technician stopped the wheelchair.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel looked at the social worker for permission before coming closer.<\/p>\n<p>That small hesitation broke something in me.<\/p>\n<p>Twenty-four hours earlier, he would have picked Sophie up without thinking.<\/p>\n<p>Now he was asking strangers whether he could approach his own child.<\/p>\n<p>Sophie noticed too.<\/p>\n<p>Her expression hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCome here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel did.<\/p>\n<p>She wrapped her arms around him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He bent over her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told them you didn\u2019t do anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know, bug.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eric looked away.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel kissed the top of Sophie\u2019s head.<\/p>\n<p>Then the technician gently said we had to go.<\/p>\n<p>Sophie released him reluctantly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you coming?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Dr. Ortiz.<\/p>\n<p>The doctor hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClaire can accompany her for the ultrasound. We\u2019ll update everyone afterward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sophie\u2019s jaw tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll be right here,\u201d Daniel said.<\/p>\n<p>She stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPromise?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPromise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The elevator ride downstairs took less than a minute.<\/p>\n<p>It felt much longer.<\/p>\n<p>Sophie watched the floor numbers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the test says I\u2019m pregnant and I say I\u2019m not, who do people believe?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe believe you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEric didn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was frightened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s not what I asked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The technician pretended to be interested in the elevator buttons.<\/p>\n<p>I squeezed Sophie\u2019s shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She nodded once.<\/p>\n<p>When the doors opened, she whispered, \u201cDaniel did too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The ultrasound room was dim and cool. A monitor glowed beside the bed. Bottles of gel stood in a warming tray.<\/p>\n<p>Sophie climbed onto the table.<\/p>\n<p>The technician explained what she was doing before touching her.<\/p>\n<p>That mattered now.<\/p>\n<p>Everything mattered now.<\/p>\n<p>Sophie lifted her sweatshirt enough for the examination.<\/p>\n<p>The warm gel made her flinch.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat feels gross.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverybody says that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why don\u2019t you invent less gross gel?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The technician smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll put in a request.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The probe moved slowly over Sophie\u2019s abdomen.<\/p>\n<p>I watched the monitor despite understanding none of it.<\/p>\n<p>Gray shapes shifted across black.<\/p>\n<p>The technician grew quieter.<\/p>\n<p>She measured something.<\/p>\n<p>Then measured it again.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Ortiz entered several minutes later.<\/p>\n<p>She studied the screen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>Neither woman answered.<\/p>\n<p>Sophie looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>The technician moved the probe lower.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Ortiz leaned toward the monitor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCheck the uterus again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The technician did.<\/p>\n<p>My heart hammered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you looking for?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Ortiz raised one hand.<\/p>\n<p>The technician changed the angle.<\/p>\n<p>Sophie winced.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSorry,\u201d the woman said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt doesn\u2019t hurt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTell me if it does.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another image appeared.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Ortiz stared at it.<\/p>\n<p>I could hear the faint buzz of the overhead light.<\/p>\n<p>Finally she said, \u201cFreeze that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The technician\u2019s hand stopped.<\/p>\n<p>Sophie tightened her fingers around mine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you see?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Ortiz did not answer immediately.<\/p>\n<p>She leaned toward the screen.<\/p>\n<p>The technician adjusted the contrast.<\/p>\n<p>A measurement appeared.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Ortiz\u2019s expression became very still.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCheck the uterus one more time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI already have.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlease.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The probe moved again.<\/p>\n<p>I watched the doctor&#39;s face instead of the monitor.<\/p>\n<p>Then she turned toward me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is no pregnancy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For one glorious second, everything inside me collapsed with relief.<\/p>\n<p>I bent over Sophie and kissed her hair.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sophie began crying.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told everybody.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know, sweetheart.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I held her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a bad test.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Ortiz remained silent.<\/p>\n<p>I looked up.<\/p>\n<p>She was staring at another part of the ultrasound.<\/p>\n<p>My relief lasted perhaps five seconds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoctor?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She pointed toward an irregular shape near Sophie\u2019s right ovary.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe test wasn\u2019t wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=12253\">Click here to continue reading: PART 2: Relief Lasted Only Seconds Before the Ultrasound Revealed Why a Child\u2019s Body Was Producing a Pregnancy Hormone<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By the time the emergency-room doctor asked Daniel to wait outside, Sophie had stopped asking why everyone was whispering.
