Maybe he still believed he could explain everything afterward.<\/p>\n<p>I unfolded three pages.<\/p>\n<p>My mother&#39;s handwriting filled them.<\/p>\n<p>For a second, the room disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>I remembered that handwriting on grocery lists, birthday cards and the labels she used to stick inside my school notebooks. The letters slanted slightly to the right. Her capital D always curved too widely, as though it had been drawn instead of written.<\/p>\n<p>I read the first line silently.<\/p>\n<p>Then I stopped.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur leaned toward me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDiane.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I lifted the microphone.<\/p>\n<p>My voice was quieter than before.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mother wrote this for me before she died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No one moved.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur smiled tightly at the audience.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is an emotional family matter. I think we should give Diane some privacy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat&#39;s interesting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His eyes returned to me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou weren&#39;t worried about my privacy when you told everyone I failed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A few people looked down at their tables.<\/p>\n<p>Lily stepped away from him.<\/p>\n<p>I read.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2018My dear Diane. If you&#39;re holding this, you are eighteen, which means you have already lived ten years without me. I am sorry for every one of them.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My voice nearly broke.<\/p>\n<p>I lowered the letter.<\/p>\n<p>Susan stood near the ballroom entrance with one hand pressed against her mouth.<\/p>\n<p>I continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2018There are things I cannot leave to chance. The Magnolia house is yours. It was mine before I married your father, and it came from my mother. I have protected it because one day you may need something in this world that no one can take away by changing their mind about you.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The silence sharpened.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur&#39;s face had become rigid.<\/p>\n<p>I kept reading.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2018Your father knows this. He has promised me that he will never pressure you to sell, transfer or surrender that property. He has promised that you will decide what happens to it only after you are old enough to understand what it means.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A camera shutter clicked.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur reached for the microphone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat&#39;s enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I moved it out of reach.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His voice dropped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDiane.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou promised her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour mother was dying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The sentence landed badly.<\/p>\n<p>I saw it in the audience.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur saw it too.<\/p>\n<p>He corrected himself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was frightened. People make complicated decisions when they&#39;re ill.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Sanders stepped forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis particular decision was quite clear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho invited you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen leave.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sanders opened his briefcase.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#39;ll leave when my client does.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur looked toward me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour client?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe&#39;s my daughter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose things are not mutually exclusive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lily&#39;s friends had begun whispering near the stage.<\/p>\n<p>Lily herself stood frozen.<\/p>\n<p>This was supposed to be her celebration.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at her and felt guilty for the first time that night.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#39;m sorry,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>She shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon&#39;t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her voice carried through the nearest microphone.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLily, sweetheart, this has nothing to do with you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou used my banquet as an alibi.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room shifted again.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur&#39;s confidence cracked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho told you that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNobody had to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lily glanced at the clock on the ballroom wall.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom disappeared exactly when Diane disappeared. You stayed onstage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur&#39;s voice hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGo sit down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carol&#39;s daughter had never said that word to him in public.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe never in private.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur looked toward the entrance as though expecting Carol to appear and restore order.<\/p>\n<p>She didn&#39;t.<\/p>\n<p>I unfolded the second page.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur&#39;s expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>He knew there was more.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDiane, please.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That word surprised me.<\/p>\n<p>I had heard him demand, command, insist, dismiss and warn.<\/p>\n<p>I had rarely heard him say please.<\/p>\n<p>I read again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2018Your father will be the trustee while you are a minor because I want to believe that whatever happens between us, he will remain loyal to you.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My throat tightened.<\/p>\n<p>The letter continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2018But if he ever asks you to sign quickly, secretly or because you are frightened about money, stop. Call Susan. Call Mr. Sanders. Do not sign anything just because someone who loves you says urgency is proof of love.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stopped.<\/p>\n<p>The room remained completely silent.<\/p>\n<p>My mother had known him.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe not every detail.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe not this exact scheme.<\/p>\n<p>But she had known enough.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur stared at the carpet.<\/p>\n<p>I reached the last paragraph.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2018The house is not the most important thing I am leaving you. The important thing is the right to decide for yourself. People may tell you that refusing them is selfish. Sometimes refusal is simply the first form of adulthood.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My hands trembled.<\/p>\n<p>The final line was only six words.<\/p>\n<p>I read those too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2018You were never difficult to love.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That almost ended me.<\/p>\n<p>For ten years, I had wondered whether my mother would have been disappointed by the person I became.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur&#39;s criticism had seeped so deeply into that uncertainty that sometimes I could no longer tell where his voice ended and mine began.<\/p>\n<p>The letter answered something I had never known how to ask.<\/p>\n<p>I lowered the page.<\/p>\n<p>No one applauded.<\/p>\n<p>I was grateful.<\/p>\n<p>Applause would have made it theatrical.<\/p>\n<p>This wasn&#39;t.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur stepped toward me.<\/p>\n<p>His expression had changed from anger to calculation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can discuss this privately.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDiane, enough damage has been done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo who?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He didn&#39;t answer.<\/p>\n<p>The ballroom doors opened.<\/p>\n<p>Two uniformed officers entered.<\/p>\n<p>Every head turned.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur stopped moving.<\/p>\n<p>Behind them came Carol.<\/p>\n<p>Her lipstick was gone.<\/p>\n<p>So was most of her composure.<\/p>\n<p>An officer walked beside her, not touching her, but close enough that the meaning was obvious.<\/p>\n<p>Lily whispered, \u201cMom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carol saw her daughter.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time that evening, genuine shame crossed her face.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur stepped down from the stage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One officer approached him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr. Reynolds?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to speak with you regarding an attempted property transfer tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur turned immediately toward me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou called the police?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr. Sanders did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sanders corrected me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe notary office did. I provided supporting information.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur looked at Carol.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She recoiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did I say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His tone sharpened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you tell them?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lily stared at both of them.<\/p>\n<p>Carol&#39;s shock hardened into anger.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou planned this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur looked toward the officers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis isn&#39;t the place.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d Carol said. \u201cYou planned all of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Guests began openly recording on their phones.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur lowered his voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStop talking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said the notary would never question Emily.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCarol.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said Diane was too stupid to check the estate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My body went cold.<\/p>\n<p>Carol seemed to realize what she had said only after it was out.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur closed his eyes briefly.<\/p>\n<p>The officer nearest him spoke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr. Reynolds, I&#39;m going to ask that you come with us to answer some questions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAm I under arrest?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot at this time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen I&#39;ll contact counsel tomorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;re free to do that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur straightened his jacket.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have nothing to hide.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost laughed.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, I folded my mother&#39;s letter carefully and returned it to the envelope.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou think you&#39;ve won something?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The question didn&#39;t sound like him.<\/p>\n<p>It sounded wounded.<\/p>\n<p>That made it more dangerous.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI stopped you from taking my house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;ve destroyed this family over a house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lily spoke from behind him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur turned.<\/p>\n<p>She looked smaller under the ballroom lights than she had minutes earlier.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou did that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carol covered her mouth.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur stared at Lily.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don&#39;t understand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI understand enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She pointed toward the exit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou used my banquet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carol whispered, \u201cLily.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her daughter looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you used me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carol shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNever.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The word came out with tears.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou made everything about Diane and me. Who scored better. Who dressed better. Who behaved better. Who Dad was prouder of.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She wiped her face angrily.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou told me I was winning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carol&#39;s shoulders sagged.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was the problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody interrupted.<\/p>\n<p>Lily looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought she hated me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn&#39;t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She turned back to Carol.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou needed me to think she did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carol began crying then.<\/p>\n<p>Not loudly.<\/p>\n<p>She simply stood there while tears ruined what remained of her makeup.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur seemed disgusted by everyone&#39;s emotion.<\/p>\n<p>He looked toward Sanders.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;re enjoying this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sanders&#39;s answer was immediate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour wife is being questioned, your daughter just learned you attempted to deprive her of inherited property, and your stepdaughter is discovering her family structure was built around manipulation. There is nothing enjoyable about this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur&#39;s mouth tightened.<\/p>\n<p>One officer gestured toward the hallway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr. Reynolds.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur walked.<\/p>\n<p>At the doors, he stopped.<\/p>\n<p>He looked back at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have no idea what maintaining that property cost.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou think your mother left you some perfect gift. She left repairs. Taxes. Legal fees.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Still nothing.<\/p>\n<p>His voice rose.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI kept it alive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Sanders answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUsing trust funds allocated for exactly that purpose.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur looked stunned.<\/p>\n<p>Sanders continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes. We have those records.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was new information to me.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur recovered quickly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don&#39;t know everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen perhaps you should explain it to investigators.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur left.<\/p>\n<p>The ballroom slowly began breathing again.<\/p>\n<p>Guests spoke in hushed clusters.<\/p>\n<p>Some avoided looking at us.<\/p>\n<p>Others looked too much.<\/p>\n<p>I suddenly wanted to be anywhere else.<\/p>\n<p>Lily sat on the edge of the stage.<\/p>\n<p>Her shoulders shook.<\/p>\n<p>I sat beside her.<\/p>\n<p>For several seconds, neither of us spoke.<\/p>\n<p>Then she said, \u201cWorst banquet ever.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A laugh escaped me.<\/p>\n<p>It was inappropriate.<\/p>\n<p>Necessary.<\/p>\n<p>She laughed too, once, then started crying again.<\/p>\n<p>I put my arm around her.<\/p>\n<p>Across the ballroom, Carol remained with an officer.<\/p>\n<p>Susan approached us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you want to leave?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lily looked toward her mother.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know where I&#39;m supposed to go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The sentence hit me harder than everything else.<\/p>\n<p>Three days earlier, I had asked the same question.<\/p>\n<p>Susan crouched in front of her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can come with us tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lily looked surprised.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;d let me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She glanced at me.<\/p>\n<p>I nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCome.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We left through a side exit to avoid the cameras gathering in the lobby.<\/p>\n<p>Outside, Beverly Hills traffic continued as if our family hadn&#39;t just split open inside a hotel ballroom.<\/p>\n<p>Susan drove.<\/p>\n<p>Lily sat in the back.<\/p>\n<p>I held my mother&#39;s letter against my chest.<\/p>\n<p>Halfway to Susan&#39;s house, Mr. Sanders called.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe police want formal statements tomorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOkay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is something else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I sat straighter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI reviewed the trust records while you were at the banquet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour father wasn&#39;t lying about one thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe did maintain the Magnolia house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked out the window.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sanders hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe also borrowed against funds that were meant to support it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy not?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause the accounts were moved between institutions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Susan glanced at me.<\/p>\n<p>Sanders continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Diane?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI found payments from the trust to a company connected to Arthur.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow long?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYears.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The house had not been the beginning.<\/p>\n<p>It had only been the final move.<\/p>\n<p>My father had apparently been taking from what my mother left me long before he tried to take the property itself.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=12208\">Click here to continue reading: PART 6: The House My Father Called a Burden Contained Records Proving He Had Been Paying Himself From My Mother\u2019s Trust<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The seal gave with a soft tear that somehow sounded louder than the ballroom.
