Lily had been sent upstairs after Carol announced that the conversation was \u201can adult financial matter,\u201d which would have been funny if I hadn&#39;t seen 418 Magnolia Avenue printed halfway down the first page.<\/p>\n<p>I didn&#39;t touch the papers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur folded his hands.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA practical solution.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo your situation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carol leaned forward. \u201cYour father and I aren&#39;t abandoning you, Diane. Despite how you behaved earlier, we want to help.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That sentence was so carefully constructed that I knew someone had rehearsed it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur pushed the documents toward me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can provide a modest amount to help you establish yourself. First month&#39;s rent. Deposit. Basic expenses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTen thousand dollars.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>Ten thousand dollars was generous enough to sound persuasive and small enough to be suspicious in a family that spent nearly that much hosting Lily&#39;s birthday parties.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd I get ten thousand dollars for signing these?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn essence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned the first page.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the language was deliberately dense. I recognized references to relinquishment, transfer, beneficiary interest and estate property.<\/p>\n<p>Then I reached the address.<\/p>\n<p>418 Magnolia Avenue, Pasadena.<\/p>\n<p>I kept my face still.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is this property?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur&#39;s reply came too quickly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAn old asset.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhose?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe estate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhose estate?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His jaw tightened.<\/p>\n<p>Carol answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour mother&#39;s.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There it was.<\/p>\n<p>Ten years of silence, condensed into two words.<\/p>\n<p>I lowered my eyes to the papers before they could see the anger in them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mother owned a house?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt isn&#39;t really a house anymore,\u201d Arthur said. \u201cIt&#39;s a complicated estate asset with maintenance obligations, taxes and legal complications.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why do you want it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don&#39;t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said it immediately.<\/p>\n<p>I turned another page.<\/p>\n<p>The proposed transfer would place control with a company I didn&#39;t recognize.<\/p>\n<p>Reynolds Family Holdings LLC.<\/p>\n<p>I knew my father&#39;s middle name. I knew Carol&#39;s. I knew enough about their finances to understand what \u201cfamily\u201d meant when they used it.<\/p>\n<p>I looked up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou want me to give you the house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur&#39;s chair creaked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. We&#39;re simplifying an old estate problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy paying me ten thousand dollars.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have no income.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carol&#39;s voice had lost some of its softness.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo university placement. No plan. No savings worth mentioning. Your father is giving you an opportunity to start independently.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I nearly smiled.<\/p>\n<p>They thought the failed examination had trapped me.<\/p>\n<p>That explained the timing.<\/p>\n<p>I picked up the pen.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur relaxed.<\/p>\n<p>Carol&#39;s fingers loosened around her wineglass.<\/p>\n<p>I placed the pen down again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want a lawyer to read it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur&#39;s expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don&#39;t need a lawyer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen signing tomorrow shouldn&#39;t be a problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis offer expires tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I&#39;m not negotiating with my own child.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat&#39;s exactly what you&#39;re doing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He pushed back from the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have supported you for eighteen years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd apparently kept information about Mom&#39;s estate from me for ten.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carol interrupted. \u201cYour father was protecting you from responsibilities you weren&#39;t old enough to understand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#39;m old enough now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur&#39;s eyes narrowed.<\/p>\n<p>For one dangerous second, I thought he knew.<\/p>\n<p>Then he reached for the papers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;ve made your choice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I put my hand on them first.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#39;d like a copy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey&#39;re drafts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I released them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOkay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That seemed to disturb him more than an argument would have.<\/p>\n<p>I stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere are you going?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo pack. Sunday comes quickly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Upstairs, I locked my bedroom door.<\/p>\n<p>Lily emerged from her room ten minutes later after receiving the text I had sent her.<\/p>\n<p>She slipped inside.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I told her.<\/p>\n<p>Her face went pale.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom said it was just paperwork.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot what it was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I believed her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan you do something for me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKeep them downstairs for five minutes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAsk about your banquet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That worked better than I expected.<\/p>\n<p>Lily&#39;s upcoming celebration was Carol&#39;s favorite subject. Her daughter had performed well on her own entrance examination, and Carol had organized a formal Beverly Hills event to celebrate what she called \u201cthe beginning of Lily&#39;s future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The moment I heard them discussing floral arrangements, I moved.<\/p>\n<p>Carol&#39;s home office was at the opposite end of the second floor.<\/p>\n<p>The door was unlocked.<\/p>\n<p>I stepped inside and closed it almost completely.<\/p>\n<p>Her desk was immaculate except for a silver laptop, two leather organizers and a locked drawer.<\/p>\n<p>I searched nothing at first.<\/p>\n<p>I photographed.<\/p>\n<p>Every visible paper. Every calendar note. Every business card.<\/p>\n<p>Then I saw a legal pad beside the printer.<\/p>\n<p>Three lines had been written across the top.<\/p>\n<p>Diane \u2014 18.<\/p>\n<p>Magnolia transfer.<\/p>\n<p>Before Lily leaves for Canada.<\/p>\n<p>My pulse hammered.<\/p>\n<p>Canada?<\/p>\n<p>Lily had never mentioned moving.<\/p>\n<p>A floorboard creaked outside.<\/p>\n<p>I shoved my phone into my pocket.<\/p>\n<p>The door opened.<\/p>\n<p>Carol stood there.<\/p>\n<p>For half a second, neither of us moved.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you doing?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI needed tape.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her gaze traveled to the desk.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTape.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor packing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She entered slowly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;ve never been a convincing liar.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I thought about the 98.7 score.<\/p>\n<p>Apparently I had improved.<\/p>\n<p>Carol opened a drawer, removed a roll of tape and placed it in my hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHere.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThanks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As I passed her, she spoke quietly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou should reconsider your father&#39;s offer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause pride is expensive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd houses aren&#39;t?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her face became completely still.<\/p>\n<p>That was enough.<\/p>\n<p>I walked away.<\/p>\n<p>At midnight, after the house had gone quiet, I called the only adult I trusted without reservation.<\/p>\n<p>Aunt Susan.<\/p>\n<p>She was my mother&#39;s younger sister, though Arthur had gradually pushed her to the edge of our lives after Eleanor died. We still exchanged birthday messages. Sometimes she mailed me books. Once, when I was fourteen, she drove forty miles just to watch me receive a school science award because my father had \u201can unavoidable dinner.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She answered on the third ring.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDiane?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI need to ask you something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My voice must have frightened her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Mom own a house at 418 Magnolia Avenue?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>Not confusion.<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>I sat straighter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAunt Susan?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere did you hear that address?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo she did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad told me it was an estate problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Susan made a sound that was almost a laugh but contained no humor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat house was the opposite of a problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt belonged to Eleanor before she married Arthur. Our grandmother left it to her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho owns it now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room seemed to tilt.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou do, Diane.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I pressed the phone against my ear.<\/p>\n<p>Susan continued carefully.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour mother created protections around the property when she became ill. She wanted it preserved until you were legally old enough to control it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy didn&#39;t anyone tell me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought you knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn&#39;t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh, God.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Susan&#39;s breathing changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour father told me the estate attorney had explained everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe didn&#39;t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen did Arthur ask you to sign?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I froze.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow did you know he asked?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Eleanor was afraid he eventually would.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at my bedroom door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAunt Susan, I need everything you know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Susan was quiet for several seconds.<\/p>\n<p>Then she said, \u201cNot over the phone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My skin prickled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause if Arthur is trying to transfer that property now, this isn&#39;t a family disagreement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA legal emergency.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She gave me an address and told me to meet her at nine the next morning.<\/p>\n<p>Before ending the call, she added one name.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAsk for Mr. Sanders.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho is he?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour mother&#39;s estate attorney.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I barely slept.<\/p>\n<p>At eight the next morning, I packed a change of clothes, the brass key, my mother&#39;s photograph and the examination report.<\/p>\n<p>As I reached the stairs, voices drifted from below.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur and Carol were in the study.<\/p>\n<p>I should have kept walking.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, I stopped.<\/p>\n<p>Carol spoke first.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf she doesn&#39;t sign voluntarily, we use the other option.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur answered too quietly for me to catch every word.<\/p>\n<p>Then I heard one sentence clearly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe believes she failed.
