drugging Peter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Robert&#39;s eyes closed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe insisted he did not kill him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you believe him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Michael discovered who used his credentials afterward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My pulse quickened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret looked at Vanessa.<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe believed Vanessa&#39;s badge was used to access the east stairwell.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat doesn&#39;t mean Vanessa used it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho had it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThomas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut Thomas didn&#39;t have Michael&#39;s credentials.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen who did?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret&#39;s eyes moved toward Robert.<\/p>\n<p>He went still.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy are you looking at him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Michael wrote that he gave his login code to Robert.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned slowly.<\/p>\n<p>Robert&#39;s face drained.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMonths earlier. Robert wanted to check Peter&#39;s medication records.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Robert shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was one time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you know the code?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you give it to anyone?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVictor?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWilliam?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThomas?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMichael didn&#39;t believe you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Robert looked wounded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe thought you gave the code to Victor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn&#39;t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would he think that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Victor knew it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>I felt my heartbeat in my throat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Robert whispered, \u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMichael believed Victor obtained it from you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Robert stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSit down,\u201d Priya said.<\/p>\n<p>He did.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Margaret.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat exactly did Michael write?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She recited from memory.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said: \u2018I gave Robert the code. Later Victor knew it. I don&#39;t know whether Robert gave it to him or whether Victor stole it. But whoever used my account took the syringe.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel asked, \u201cDo you still have the letter?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy attorney&#39;s safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Priya immediately arranged retrieval.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was another sentence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her voice softened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMichael wrote that Peter spoke after the monitor alarm began.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My breath caught.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did he say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA nurse heard him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMichael never named her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did Dad say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret looked directly at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwo words.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I could barely breathe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat words?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She answered:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot Thomas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room became silent.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas had been inside.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas had threatened him.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas had lied for decades.<\/p>\n<p>But my father, dying, had apparently tried to clear him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnything else?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne more word.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I leaned forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMargaret.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My heart stopped.<\/p>\n<p>Dad&#39;s last words had been:<\/p>\n<p>Not Thomas.
