died.”

“Where?”

“In the employee lot.”

Robert had said he returned for the flash drive.

“What time?”

“About one forty-five.”

“Did you see him?”

“No.”

“Just the car?”

“Yes.”

I felt an unexpected thread of relief.

That matched his story.

Then Vanessa added:

“But someone was sitting in the passenger seat.”

Daniel leaned forward.

“Who?”

“I couldn't see.”

“Man or woman?”

“Woman, I think.”

My mind moved immediately to Mom.

But Mom had supposedly left earlier.

“Could it have been my mother?”

“Maybe.”

“Did Robert drive away?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“About two.”

“Alone?”

Vanessa looked at me.

“No.”

The room became silent.

“So whoever was in the passenger seat left with him.”

“Yes.”

I thought of Robert saying he returned, saw the fake Ortega and left.

He had omitted the passenger.

Another lie.

“Anything else?”

Vanessa rubbed her thumb against a torn seam in her jeans.

“The next morning, Robert called me.”

“What did he say?”

“He told me never to mention seeing his car.”

My throat tightened.

“Why?”

“He said Elena could never know he came back.”

I stared at the floor.

“What did you say?”

“I agreed.”

“Why?”

“Because by then I knew Peter was dead.”

“And you thought Robert might be responsible.”

“Yes.”

“Do you still?”

Vanessa took a long breath.

“No.”

I looked up sharply.

“Why not?”

“Because I know who the passenger was.”

Everything in the room stopped.

Daniel spoke first.

“Who?”

Vanessa stood and walked to the window.

For a moment I thought she might refuse.

Then she turned.

“I saw her clearly the next morning on security footage William had me collect.”

My heart began pounding.

“Who?”

She looked directly at me.

“Your mother.”

I stared.

“Mom left with Robert?”

“Yes.”

“After Dad died?”

“Yes.”

“Why would Robert hide that?”

“I don't know.”

“Where did they go?”

“I followed them.”

That surprised me.

“Why?”

“William ordered me to.”

“To where?”

“A house outside Fairview.”

“Whose?”

“I didn't know then.”

“And now?”

She looked toward the folder.

“It belonged to Gerald Mason.”

I felt the ground shift again.

“Gerald?”

“Yes.”

“What happened there?”

“Robert and Margaret went inside.”

“For how long?”

“Forty minutes.”

“Did Gerald arrive?”

“He was already there.”

My mind raced.

Robert.

Mom.

Gerald.

Together after Dad's death.

All three had hidden it.

“What did they do?”

“I couldn't see.”

“Then how do you know it matters?”

Vanessa's face tightened.

“Because when they came out, Margaret was carrying a medical cooler.”

Daniel frowned.

“What kind?”

“The kind hospitals use for medications.”

A chill spread through the room.

“Did Mom have it when she entered?”

“No.”

“So she got it from Gerald's house.”

“Yes.”

“What happened to it?”

“Robert put it in his trunk.”

I could hear my pulse.

“Why?”

“I don't know.”

“Did you see it again?”

“No.”

Daniel asked, “Do you have photographs?”

Vanessa nodded.

“One.”

She took an old phone from her bag.

The screen was cracked.

She scrolled.

Then showed us.

The image was grainy but clear enough.

My mother stood beside Robert's car.

Gerald was behind her.

Robert held the trunk open.

In Mom's hands was a white medical cooler.

The photograph was timestamped 2:46 a.m.

Barely an hour after Dad died.

I stared at my mother's face.

She wasn't grieving.

Not yet.

She looked focused.

Angry.

Alive with purpose.

“What was in the cooler?”

Vanessa answered softly.

“I think your mother took the missing midazolam.”

My breath caught.

“Why?”

“To prove your father had been drugged.”

That made sense.

Too much sense.

“Then Gerald was helping her preserve evidence.”

“Maybe.”

“What does that have to do with Robert?”

“I don't know.”

I looked again at the photograph.

Three people working together after Dad's death.

Three people who later concealed the meeting from me.

Robert had lied.

Gerald had lied.

Mom had left letters revealing only part of the truth.

Something else happened that night.

Something important enough that every survivor had spent six years hiding it.

Vanessa suddenly looked toward the curtain.

“What?”

She didn't answer.

Then headlights swept across the wall.

A car stopped outside.

Daniel moved immediately.

“Back exit?”

“Bathroom window.”

Lucas checked it.

“Too small.”

A knock sounded.

Three measured blows.

My stomach tightened.

Vanessa grabbed the handgun.

Daniel stepped in front of her.

“Put that down.”

“They found me.”

Another knock.

Then a man's voice.

“Elena?”

I froze.

Robert.

Marisol stared at me.

“He followed us?”

Daniel opened the curtain a fraction.

Robert stood outside alone.

His hands were visible.

His car was parked crookedly behind ours.

I opened the door before anyone could stop me.

Robert looked at my face.

“You found out.”

“Yes.”

He glanced past me.

Vanessa stood across the room.

Their eyes met.

Years of history passed silently between them.

I stepped outside and pulled the door shut behind me.

“Why did Mom leave the hospital with you?”

Robert looked exhausted.

“Because she knew Peter had been murdered.”

“Why did you take her to Gerald's?”

“To get evidence.”

“The cooler.”

His eyes widened.

“How do you know about that?”

“Vanessa followed you.”

He closed his eyes.

“Of course she did.”

“What was in it?”

“Peter's blood samples.”

My stomach dropped.

“What?”

“Margaret had convinced a nurse to draw extra samples before the body was transferred.”

“Why take them to Gerald?”

“His son worked at a private laboratory.”

The pieces moved into place.

“Mom had Dad's blood tested independently.”

“Yes.”

“And?”

Robert looked toward the motel door.

“He had midazolam in his system.”

“How much?”

“Enough to sedate him heavily.”

“Enough to kill him?”

“No.”

I frowned.

“Then what killed him?”

Robert's face went still.

“That is the part I never told you.”

My throat tightened.

“What?”

“Peter didn't die from the sedative.”

“Then how?”

Robert looked directly at me.

“Someone injected air into his IV line.”

For a second I did not understand.

Then Daniel opened the door behind me.

He had heard.

“Air embolism?”

Robert nodded.

Daniel stared.

“Was it confirmed?”

“Not officially.”

“How do you know?”

“Because Margaret found a puncture in the IV tubing.”

My stomach turned.

“Who had access?”

Robert's eyes shifted toward Vanessa.

She had come to the doorway.

He said, “Anyone who entered the room.”

Vanessa's face went pale.

I asked, “Did Mom know who did it?”

Robert looked at me.

“She thought she did.”

“Who?”

He hesitated.

I stepped closer.

“Say the name.”

Robert swallowed.

“She thought Victor killed your father.”

That should have resolved something.

Instead I remembered Mom's letter.

William will want you to believe he killed your father.

He did not.

The person who made sure your father did not come home was someone he trusted enough to call from the hospital.

Dad had called Robert.

Not Victor.

I looked at my ex-husband.

He saw the thought happen.

“Elena.”

“You were one of the people Dad trusted enough to call.”

“Yes.”

“You were inside his room.”

“Yes.”

“You came back after leaving.”

“Yes.”

“And you hid that for six years.”

“Yes.”

Vanessa whispered behind me.

“There's one more thing.”

Nobody moved.

She looked at Robert.

“You didn't come back alone.”

Robert's face changed.

I turned.

Vanessa continued.

“I saw who drove your car into the hospital lot the second time.”

My breath caught.

“Who?”

She looked at me.

“It wasn't Robert.”

I stared.

“Then who?”

Her voice dropped.

“Your mother.”

Click here to continue reading: PART 14: My Mother’s Secret Trip Back to
