tightened.

“The night Dad died?”

“Yes.”

“Why did you tell us William introduced you?”

“Because that's what I needed everyone to believe.”

My anger came back so fast I felt dizzy.

“Why?”

Robert's eyes filled.

“Because Vanessa wasn't at that hospital by accident.”

Daniel stepped closer.

“What was she doing?”

Robert stared at the visitor log.

“She was waiting for someone.”

“Who?”

“I didn't know then.”

“And now?”

Robert looked at me.

“Now I think she was waiting for the man pretending to be Samuel Ortega.”

I thought of the stolen Mercedes.

Two occupants going toward the hospital.

One leaving.

“Vanessa was the passenger.”

Robert nodded slowly.

“Yes.”

The room became absolutely still.

Then Daniel's phone buzzed.

A message from the records office.

One additional archived item had been located.

A security still from St. Anne's east corridor at 1:32 a.m.

Two minutes before Dad's monitor alarm.

Daniel opened it.

The image was grainy, but the figures were clear enough.

Vanessa stood outside Dad's room.

Beside her was a man wearing Samuel Ortega's camel coat.

His face was turned toward the camera.

Nobody spoke.

I recognized him.

Not because I knew him well.

Because I had seen him earlier that day in an old photograph beside my parents.

Silver hair.

Dark suit.

Calm expression.

Victor Hale.

But the visitor log said Victor had already left five minutes earlier.

Daniel stared at the screen.

“So Victor signed out…”

Gerald finished quietly.

“…then changed clothes.”

I looked at the image again.

Victor had entered my father's hospital room under his own name.

Then apparently returned disguised as Samuel Ortega.

My phone vibrated.

Victor.

One message.

YOU'RE LOOKING AT THE WRONG MAN.

A second arrived immediately.

CHECK THE TIME STAMP.

Daniel enlarged the security still.

1:32:14.

Then he looked at the visitor log.

Victor's recorded departure:

1:27.

Five minutes.

Enough time to change clothes.

Enough time to return.

But something was wrong.

I stared at the photograph.

“What?”

Marisol leaned closer.

I pointed toward the man's left hand.

Victor in the photograph from six years ago wore a large ring.

The man in the hospital still wore none.

Gerald looked at me.

“That doesn't prove anything.”

“No.”

I enlarged the face.

The image blurred.

But the hairline was wrong.

Slightly.

The ears too.

Daniel saw it.

“That's not Victor.”

Robert stood.

“What?”

“It's someone made to look like him.”

The room went silent.

Two identities had been used that night.

Samuel Ortega.

Victor Hale.

Someone had built layers of misdirection before my father died.

I stared at Vanessa beside the disguised man.

She was the only person we could identify with certainty.

And she was still alive.

“Find Vanessa.”

Daniel looked at me.

“She said she couldn't tell us where she was.”

“Then we give her a reason.”

“What reason?”

I picked up my phone.

I typed one sentence and sent it.

WE KNOW YOU WERE AT ST. ANNE'S.

The response arrived almost instantly.

A location pin.

Then four words:

COME WITHOUT ROBERT CARTER.

I looked at my ex-husband.

His face told me he understood the implication as clearly as I did.

Vanessa was willing to tell us what happened the night my father died.

But she was still afraid of Robert.

Click here to continue reading: PART 13: Vanessa Finally Told Me Why She Feared Robert, and the Truth About My Father’s Last Night Changed Everything Again

Samuel Ortega spoke first. “What hospital?” I looked at him. “You didn't know he survived?” “No.” Gerald's face had gone gray. “Neither did I.” Robert remained standing beside his overturned …

[1

post-12165","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-insightdrama
["GET
