cold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was a threat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know that now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel&#39;s phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>He looked at the screen.<\/p>\n<p>Unknown number.<\/p>\n<p>He answered on answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTell Robert I&#39;m sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Robert stepped toward the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVanessa?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A shaky breath came through.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere are you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can&#39;t tell you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho do you work for?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>Then:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot Victor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Every eye in the room turned toward me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWilliam?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa did not answer directly.<\/p>\n<p>Instead she said, \u201cDo not go home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Caldwell doesn&#39;t need the deed it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf box 317 was intact, you have it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned toward the brown-paper packet we had not yet opened.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel reached for it.<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa&#39;s voice sharpened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Elena?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the packet is still sealed, don&#39;t open it in that building.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A sound came through her line.<\/p>\n<p>A door.<\/p>\n<p>Then Vanessa whispered:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause somebody followed you into the bank.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The call died.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel immediately looked toward the conference-room glass.<\/p>\n<p>A man stood in the corridor outside.<\/p>\n<p>Dark suit.<\/p>\n<p>Silver hair.<\/p>\n<p>He smiled when he saw us watching.<\/p>\n<p>William Caldwell had
