That arrangement had been Daniel&#39;s idea. \u201cIf either one decides to disappear,\u201d he&#39;d said, \u201cat least they can&#39;t disappear together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I had not argued.<\/p>\n<p>The brass key rested in my closed fist. I had held it for most of the drive until the ridged metal left a red impression across my palm.<\/p>\n<p>Box 317.<\/p>\n<p>My father had hidden something there six years ago. Robert claimed it could send him to prison. Victor wanted it badly enough to threaten my children. Gerald had spent years protecting the ledger that pointed toward it.<\/p>\n<p>Whatever waited downstairs in the bank vault had already shaped my life without my knowledge.<\/p>\n<p>Marisol touched my elbow as we approached the entrance. \u201cYou don&#39;t have to open it today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, I do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can take ten minutes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#39;ve taken six years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She didn&#39;t argue after that.<\/p>\n<p>Inside, Daniel asked for the branch manager rather than approaching the regular teller counter. A woman named Evelyn Park appeared several minutes later, checked my identification twice and disappeared into an office.<\/p>\n<p>When she returned, she carried a thin file.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMrs. Carter?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour box has unusual access restrictions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel leaned closer. \u201cWhat kind?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnly Mrs. Carter may access it. No agent, spouse, executor or beneficiary can be substituted without a court order.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Robert.<\/p>\n<p>His expression confirmed that he already knew.<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn continued. \u201cThere&#39;s also a notification attached requiring us to contact counsel before access.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat counsel?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She read the name.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSamuel Ortega.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gerald exhaled.<\/p>\n<p>I turned. \u201cYou know him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was your father&#39;s attorney.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought Dad used Franklin and Meyer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor ordinary matters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Apparently my parents had maintained entire parallel lives populated by accountants, advisers and lawyers I had never known existed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs Ortega alive?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes,\u201d Gerald said. \u201cOr he was last year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn excused herself to make the call.<\/p>\n<p>Robert walked toward the window overlooking the garage ramp.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel watched him. \u201cPlanning something?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;re sweating.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI tend to do that when evidence capable of imprisoning me is about to come out of a vault.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lucas, who had been unusually quiet, looked at him. \u201cAt least that&#39;s an honest answer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Robert gave him a tired nod.<\/p>\n<p>Twenty minutes later, Samuel Ortega arrived.<\/p>\n<p>He was shorter than I expected, perhaps sixty-five, with a charcoal suit, silver-framed glasses and a leather briefcase polished by decades of use.<\/p>\n<p>He recognized me immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cElena.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stood. \u201cHave we met?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnce. Your wedding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I searched his face and found nothing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was a long time ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His gaze moved toward Robert.<\/p>\n<p>The warmth vanished.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRobert.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSamuel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then Gerald.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGerald.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSam.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel whispered, \u201cApparently everybody knew everybody except us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ortega heard him.<\/p>\n<p>His expression tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was intentional.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him. \u201cI&#39;m beginning to hate that word.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He nodded. \u201cYou have every reason.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We moved into a private conference room.<\/p>\n<p>Ortega placed his briefcase on the table but didn&#39;t open it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBefore you access the box, your father required me to ask one question.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost laughed. \u201cFrom beyond the grave?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn effect.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat question?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked directly at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Robert come back for the house?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The air left my lungs.<\/p>\n<p>Robert closed his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>Ortega nodded once.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen Peter&#39;s condition has been satisfied.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He opened his briefcase.<\/p>\n<p>Inside was another envelope.<\/p>\n<p>My name.<\/p>\n<p>Dad&#39;s handwriting.<\/p>\n<p>I didn&#39;t touch it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow many messages did my father leave scattered around?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEnough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause he didn&#39;t know which records would survive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSurvive what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ortega looked at Robert.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople trying to destroy them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I took the envelope.<\/p>\n<p>Inside was a single page.<\/p>\n<p>Elena,<\/p>\n<p>If Robert has returned asking for the property, events have progressed farther than I hoped. Open box 317. Watch the recordings before believing any explanation, including Robert&#39;s.<\/p>\n<p>Do not assume the person who frightened you is the person who betrayed you.<\/p>\n<p>Dad<\/p>\n<p>I read the last sentence twice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho frightened me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ortega shook his head. \u201cPeter never explained that line to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he tell you what was inside?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRecordings. Financial documents. Copies of correspondence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvidence about his death?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ortega paused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe believed his life was in danger.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marisol inhaled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom Victor?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe never gave me a name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gerald shifted in his chair.<\/p>\n<p>Ortega noticed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomething to add?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I folded the letter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet&#39;s open the box.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The vault attendant escorted me alone through two security doors.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time all day, nobody followed.<\/p>\n<p>The silence felt almost luxurious.<\/p>\n<p>Box 317 was larger than I expected.<\/p>\n<p>The attendant inserted the bank&#39;s key.<\/p>\n<p>I inserted mine.<\/p>\n<p>Both locks turned.<\/p>\n<p>She slid the metal drawer free and carried it into a private viewing room.<\/p>\n<p>Then she left.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the box.<\/p>\n<p>My hands shook.<\/p>\n<p>I thought of Dad teaching me to change a tire when I was sixteen, refusing to touch the jack until I figured it out myself.<\/p>\n<p>You won&#39;t always have someone standing nearby, he&#39;d said.<\/p>\n<p>At the time I&#39;d rolled my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>I opened the lid.<\/p>\n<p>Inside were three sealed envelopes, a black flash drive, a small digital recorder, several property files and a thick packet wrapped in brown paper.<\/p>\n<p>On top lay a note.<\/p>\n<p>WATCH FIRST.<\/p>\n<p>I picked up the recorder.<\/p>\n<p>A numbered sticker marked the first file.<\/p>\n<p>1.<\/p>\n<p>I pressed play.<\/p>\n<p>Static.<\/p>\n<p>Then my father&#39;s voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cElena, if you&#39;re hearing this, something has gone badly wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My eyes closed.<\/p>\n<p>Six years vanished.<\/p>\n<p>Dad was suddenly in the room.<\/p>\n<p>His voice was older than I remembered, roughened by the cough he&#39;d developed that winter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know who will tell you what happened. That is why I am recording this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I sat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is money missing from your mother&#39;s accounts. Victor Hale had access. Gerald Mason had access. Robert had limited access through documents your mother allowed him to sign.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI made the mistake of assuming the obvious suspect was the correct one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My heart pounded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI accused Robert.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the recorder.<\/p>\n<p>Dad continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRobert did sign documents he should not have signed. He concealed transactions from Elena. He lied to me and to her. But I do not believe he began this fraud.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Began.<\/p>\n<p>Not participated in.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI confronted him tonight. He finally told me what Victor asked him to do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The recording clicked.<\/p>\n<p>Then ended.<\/p>\n<p>I immediately selected file two.<\/p>\n<p>Dad&#39;s voice returned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRobert was instructed to create two companies using Elena&#39;s information.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe claims he believed these companies were being created for legitimate estate purposes. I do not entirely believe him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost smiled despite everything.<\/p>\n<p>That was Dad.<\/p>\n<p>Even from a recording, he refused to soften a conclusion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe later discovered money was being transferred through them. Instead of telling Elena, he tried to correct the situation himself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My eyes burned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis made matters worse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another understatement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVictor then obtained leverage over Robert.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad inhaled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe leverage was not the affair.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I went still.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe woman called Vanessa is part of the operation. Robert knows this now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The recording had been made before Robert left me.<\/p>\n<p>Before the affair I believed had destroyed us.<\/p>\n<p>Dad continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRobert has agreed to cooperate with me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the device.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe is going to make Victor believe he can be controlled.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My chest tightened.<\/p>\n<p>That changed something.<\/p>\n<p>Not enough to forgive Robert.<\/p>\n<p>Enough to complicate hatred.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRobert may eventually need to leave Elena publicly. If that happens, she will believe terrible things about him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad&#39;s voice broke slightly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am sorry for allowing that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stopped the recording.<\/p>\n<p>For several seconds I couldn&#39;t continue.<\/p>\n<p>My father had known.<\/p>\n<p>Before Robert left.<\/p>\n<p>Before the divorce.<\/p>\n<p>Dad had known there might be a separation designed to fool Victor.<\/p>\n<p>But Robert had still slept with Vanessa.<\/p>\n<p>He had still missed graduations and funerals.<\/p>\n<p>Protection did not explain cruelty.<\/p>\n<p>I pressed play again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Robert follows the plan, Victor will believe Elena has been isolated from anyone who understands the financial structure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat may protect her long enough for us to obtain proof.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then Dad said something that made my blood turn cold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf I die before we finish, do not assume Victor killed me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The recording ended.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the device.<\/p>\n<p>The third file was dated the night before Dad&#39;s death.<\/p>\n<p>I pressed play.<\/p>\n<p>For several seconds there was only breathing.<\/p>\n<p>Then Dad spoke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI found the four-hundred-thousand-dollar transfer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I leaned closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was authorized by Gerald.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut Gerald did not steal it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMargaret instructed him to move the money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVictor had compromised one of the primary accounts. Margaret moved the funds through Northbridge Holdings because Gerald&#39;s son had an established company Victor did not know was connected to us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So Victor had told part of the truth.<\/p>\n<p>Gerald authorized the transfer.<\/p>\n<p>He simply hadn&#39;t stolen it.<\/p>\n<p>Dad continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRobert knows where the money went. Victor believes Robert took it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A long pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is useful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost laughed.<\/p>\n<p>Dad sounded like a man discussing chess.<\/p>\n<p>Then his voice changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is another problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Paper rustled near the microphone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomeone altered the trust.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stopped breathing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRobert&#39;s name was inserted without authorization.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another rustle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI initially believed Victor did it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My fingers tightened around the recorder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI no longer believe that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I waited.<\/p>\n<p>Dad exhaled slowly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe handwriting is Margaret&#39;s.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My mother.<\/p>\n<p>I replayed the sentence.<\/p>\n<p>The handwriting is Margaret&#39;s.<\/p>\n<p>The beneficiary alteration we had assumed was fraud had been written by my mother.<\/p>\n<p>Why?<\/p>\n<p>Dad continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI confronted her tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe admitted adding Robert.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My heart hammered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe says it was necessary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do not yet understand why.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The recording ended.<\/p>\n<p>I sat alone in the vault room with my mother&#39;s secret staring at me from six years away.<\/p>\n<p>Robert had not inserted himself into the trust.<\/p>\n<p>Victor apparently hadn&#39;t either.<\/p>\n<p>My mother had.<\/p>\n<p>I gathered everything from the box and returned to the conference room.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone stood when I entered.<\/p>\n<p>Robert saw my face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou listened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did Peter say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I put the recorder on the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat you were working with him before you left me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Robert&#39;s eyes filled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cElena\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon&#39;t mistake understanding for forgiveness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He nodded.<\/p>\n<p>I placed the altered trust document beside the recorder.<\/p>\n<p>Then looked at Gerald.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe four hundred thousand was moved on my mother&#39;s instructions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Relief crossed his face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou should have told me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Finally I looked at Robert.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mother added your name to the trust.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>Not relief.<\/p>\n<p>Shock.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou didn&#39;t know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I believed him.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel leaned forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would Grandma add Dad without telling him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I reached into the box.<\/p>\n<p>One sealed envelope remained.<\/p>\n<p>Across the front, in my mother&#39;s handwriting, were the words:<\/p>\n<p>FOR ROBERT, IF PETER IS DEAD.<\/p>\n<p>Robert stared at it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#39;ve never seen that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I slid it across the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen I suppose you&#39;re finally going to learn why my mother chose you.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=12163\">Click here to continue reading: PART 10: My Mother&#8217;s Letter Explained Why She Put Robert in the Trust and Revealed the Bargain He Was Never Supposed to Discover<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The bank occupied the ground floor of a limestone building forty minutes from Gerald&#39;s office, and by the time Daniel pulled into its underground garage, nobody had spoken for nearly &hellip;
