me.”

“About what?”

Robert looked at the brass key still in my hand.

“Box 317.”

My knees weakened.

“What did he tell you?”

Robert swallowed.

“That if anything happened to him, I had to make sure you never opened it.”

Victor laughed softly through the phone.

There was triumph in it now.

I looked at Robert.

“You spent six years trying to keep me away from that box.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

His face broke.

“Because your father put something inside that could send me to prison.”

The sentence landed like a physical blow.

Marisol whispered, “Dad…”

Robert closed his eyes.

“I didn't kill Peter.”

Victor spoke through the phone.

“No.”

Everyone froze.

Robert looked at the device.

Victor continued.

“Robert didn't kill your father.”

I tightened my grip.

“Then who did?”

Another pause.

“Open the box.”

The call ended.

Nobody spoke.

Gerald stared at Robert.

Robert stared at the floor.

Daniel slowly closed the red ledger.

I looked from one man to the other.

Two men my father had known.

Two men he had apparently distrusted.

Two men each carrying pieces of the truth and years of lies.

I slipped the brass key back into my pocket.

“We're going to the bank.”

Gerald stood.

“Elena, wait.”

“No.”

“Victor will expect it.”

“Good.”

Robert looked up.

“What are you doing?”

“For six years, everyone has been making decisions based on what they think I can handle.”

I picked up the red ledger.

“That ends now.”

Daniel nodded.

Lucas stood beside him.

Marisol came to my other side.

Robert remained across the room.

“Come with us,” I said.

He stared.

“Why?”

“Because whatever my father put in that box concerns you.”

I turned to Gerald.

“And you.”

Neither man moved.

I opened the office door.

Outside, afternoon sunlight spilled across the stairwell as if this were an ordinary day.

It wasn't.

By nightfall, I would know what my father had hidden.

And whichever man had spent six years protecting the truth was finally going to lose control of it.

Click here to continue reading: PART 9: Box 317 Held My Father’s Evidence, but the First Recording Inside Forced
